Art, as I see it, reflects the creative nature of being human. It exudes that inner force that drives the human existence recreating the beauty in life. Life however is not always a bed of roses. Reality shows both the beautiful and the ugly truth of existence. Art is a witness to this. While the artist shows the decent, palatable, and the beautiful, he also recreates the revulsive, shocking and the dark side. Mideo Cruz’s Politeismo is a good case for this.

Mideo Cruz is a reflection of Us. HIS ART IS WHO WE ARE and WHAT WE HAVE BECOME. Thank you Mideo for waking us up! Thank you for your art.

We can’t deny him and other “artists” their freedom of expression, their rights, etc., but along with rights and freedom, is power, and with great power comes great responsibility (Thank you Uncle Ben). These days, it’s just sad how we demand so much for our rights, and our freedom, when there are so many out there amongst us who can’t even taste their right to live, their right to education, their right to eat, their right for shelter, respect, and human dignity. It’s just sad that we demand so much for freedom, when there are so many amongst us who are still in the bondage of poverty, who are shackled in abuse, injustice, maltreatment, and modern day slavery.

Social responsibility should reside in every person; artists, musicians, businessmen, doctors, engineers, jeepney drivers, pedicab drivers, fishball vendors, CEOs, teachers, students, journalists, etc…We can not deny that we are free, and we enjoy our rights. The question is how do we use our given rights and our freedom? How do we use these gifts that our democracy has given us?We who are free and educated have the responsibility to use our talents and skills to unite people, form them to be better citizens, teach them how to contribute for the betterment of society, , and do all their actions for the love and greater glory of our Creator.

two ears to hear, two eyes to see, two hands to work, one mouth to speak, one phallus to procreate… unfortunately and irrationally, poor penis and vagina i think have been given such a raw deal in this country. the mere mention of the words and… “bastos… take offense… malisya”. bakit nga ba? we blind ourselves to the concepts of creative power, strength, amplification, magnification, birth, fatherhood, motherhood, joy, the regeneration of humanity… and instead see offense, invasion, rape, perversion, promiscuity, abuse, exploitation. i try and approach work seeking, “what is the artist trying to say, to share?”. back in the UP College of Fine Arts, at one of my art theory courses, i was introduced to the concept of “death of the author” in the class of artist-professor Ringo Bonoan. essentially, as i understood it, it simply means any one who views an art piece then becomes co-author and re-shapes its meaning, its significance. the people who vandalized Cruz’s “Poleteismo” brought the sum total of their fears, hatred, and condemnation into the picture as they assaulted the work. like it or not, they too are now the most celebrated co-authors of “Poleteismo” having added their lenses and their marks in the most eloquent if violent of ways.
