Recently, my hubby Alan was approached by the ABS-CBNNews website editor Isagani de Castro to revive the humor column he used to write during the darkest days of Martial Law.
I am glad he and Gani came to an agreement because oftentimes, Alan tells me things that are quite funny and which I hoped he would share with the world.
Here is Alan’s latest column about:
Philippine Christmas Traditions
Here are his other columns:
The Top 5: Philippine Congress’ Greatest Hits
Just click on the titles.
Enjoy.

I think there is perfect complementarity in husband and wife. Alan writes mainly from the Mind, Raissa mainly from the Heart.
Accordingly, when one reads Alan the mind is engaged. When one reads Raissa, the heart is engaged.
Reading Alan, you want to sit back and enjoy the wit, the bon mots. With Raissa, you are moved, you want to leap up and do something. Express your frustration, expose that anomaly, wring out that kernel of truth, smash Corona’s head.
Well done, thank you, the best of the season to the family.
Alan says
thanks, have a fun and relaxed (HA) Christmas

i couldn’t stop laughing doon sa the top 5…hehehehehe. pwedeng pagsamasamahin at buuhing isang libro.
pinaliwanag ng isang author sa kanyang nilathalang book of humor how medicine daw relies too heavily on the technical science of medicine and overlooks our God-given ability to aid the healing process through the use of a good sense of humor.

“…….share with the world….?” But of course, Alan must.
Perhaps, a compendium of all this display of mirth and humor, (with explanatory notes, especially the Martial Law items)…essays that bring about smiles…..packaged into a small book……a gift item for the next Christmas Season. Maybe ABS-CBNNEWS through Gani (pls. say hello to him) can be convinced to publish it. It will be a moderately priced gift or give-away most especially to foreigner friends of Filipinos….. magandang pasalubong ng mga OFW’s/other Pinoy Expatriates when returning to their diaspora.
Alan/Raissa……I like best “ready to rampage blindly through the mall, shopping dementedly.”
More! More! More!
Please accept my sincere wishes for a truly Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year to ya’ll.
Alan says
thanks for the kind words, I actually have a lot of my old columns lying around, maybe I’ll compile them into one file and see what I can do with them (I have one I wrote for the Chronicle about the Marcoses in 1987, back when you were in Hawaii watching them). Merry Christmas to you and yours

Yes, more literature about the Marcos era. We need more of those.
People are starting to forget (and some are actually trying to rewrite it). We need to remind people and inform the younger ones.

yes, more of FM. and why not, the JR?

The facts, humor and irony, bordering to ridicule, are well placed. You made me smile and think. Or is it the other way around, think and smile. For example, the Ray Conniff carols as means for torture. Understand in order to survive the holidays. Be good to the church, meaning be generous, or else suffer. Letting Sotto plagiarize at will. The advent of online libel. Death of the nasty law on political dynasty. RH bill and typhoons. Conversion from Catholicism. Etc.

thanks joseph, yes I’ve been a bad bad boy. Sorry

Alan’s humorous observations have sting. Like being cut with a knife so sharp, you don’t notice you’ve been hurt until the blood drips out.
And like Miriam you go “Wha???” Then realization descends, and you go, “Wha-wha-wha!”

The political dynasty or Family, Inc. or heritage service, as Alan gives it out, makes the more prouder, haughty if this word is the correct one, the Family! The RCC and other religious sects have not been vocal against this. Silence. Why? It does not involve contraceptives? Abortions? Condoms? They don’t realize it now that all churches will have to contend with family kingdoms sooner or later. The dynasties can also create their own churches, why not? Like King Henry VIII, no?
It will be the doctrine of separation of the Church and the KIngdom ofProvinces! [ not the State anymore]
When such family or heritage, inc. is almost done, totally done…more pastors and Archpastors and pastorBishops would be challenging the RCC prelates in every prayer, religious rites, ceremonies, name it, it will be so. We have now a pastorCongressman, di ba? Sunod pastorSenator! PastorGovernor! PastorMayor! and pastorVice-Mayor! ‘O coming soon…pastoriaVice-Governor also!
Who will be able to abolish all these kingdoms? Datu Kromewell?

And the other side of the token is that they enjoy immunity for whatever they say within the confines of their HOUSE. While online bloggers and digital journalists could suffer a knockdown or a Technical KO for too personal jokes.

Yeah, I do enjoy reading Alan’s humor writing. A funny wit on serious news, and writing it into comical snippets.
Season Greetings to you both.

It’s good to see Alan’s original humor in action. His article on Christmas traditions hits right on the mark. I was jolted the first time I went to the mall in Pampanga and found Christmas displays alongside Halloween displays. Shooting fireworks is also a little disconcerting, as we Americans aspire to a peacefully serene snow scene with innocent children dreaming of sugar plums, not running around blasting Santa’s sled to smithereens. Perhaps there is some residual anger that he does not appear to visit everywhere in the Philippines. Our plastic tree is pretty enough, but smells rather like eau de petroleum instead of pine. I don’t miss the snow much, but I do miss the fireplace and candles.
Well, we do have candles, but brownouts aren’t really for celebrating.
Cheers for the Christmas season.
Alan says
glad you liked them Joe, have a good and hopefully non-hectic Christmas
