In celebration of the People Power anniversary, which many people seem to have swept aside because of the standoff in Sabah, my hubby Alan wrote the following humor column.
It’s nostalgic for him in a way because he began writing humor columns during the dark days of Martial Law, when laughing about the dictatorship was the only way to ease the pain –
A short history of Martial Law, version whatever
Hot Manila – by Alan C. RoblesMartial Law? What Martial Law? What Marcos dictatorship? Never happened! Go home.
Ha ha, just kidding. OF COURSE Martial Law happened. In fact, that’s what we’re here to talk about. You see it seems more and more Filipinos are beginning to forget about that period
To address this problem, we’ve put together this short summary using highly reliable sources such as Wikipedia, elementary school textbooks, FB sites and random kids walking around our neighborhood .And, what do you know, it’s about that time of the year when we celebrate whatchamacallit, People Power. A good time to recall, uhm, what was that again? Oh yeah, Martial Law. Here goes:

Arangkada Pinoy says
The upcoming senatorial elections will either strengthen PNoy or weaken him. If UNA candidates win most of the slots, it will send a powerful message in favor of Binay’s presidential candidacy. A Binay presidency will not just be unfortunate for our country, it will be a step back to Daang Baluktot. Just look at the Three Kings who will lord it over in 2016 : Binay, who has built a scandalous fortune through massive corruption that will soon blow up on his face, Enrile, a once feared politician who is on his way to perdition as he lies through his teeth about the faked ambush and his son’s “casualties” and Erap, the ousted ex-President who is totally clueless on good governance and whose vices have been awful examples to our citizens.
I fear for our Country if Binay becomes our President. Unfortunately, Mar Roxas has been a major disappointment. He is inept, incapable of making bold and courageous decisions
and can not connect with the masses.
I have been asking around who could be our White Knight. This White Knight must be able to continue with the programs of PNoy, must be incorruptible, must love our downtrodden
kababayans, must have a name to protect, just as PNoy has been protecting his parents’ legacy. Time is running short but we still have enough time to build aground swell of support and save our country from Binay.
I have in mind Atty. Leni Robredo. She is not a trapo, she has a charisma that can inspire, connect across the demographics and her Robredo name resonates with public service, tuwid na daan, simplicity and sincerity.
She is definitely another Cory, but with a difference. She will come prepared for the presidency.
Can we start the ball rolling Ma’m Raissa?
Victin Luz says
Why not BALSY AQUINO or the other sisters but not KRIS ha , Hindi pwede sya sa morality issue.
rallie florencio says
What morality issue? She is an open book compared to those who judge her where the dirt which is always hidden.
Since morality is often the materials of the religious, be reminded that the actions of the heroes of the Bible like Jacob, David and Solomon are quite far from the quality of morals we are talking about and yet something is seen in them that have been pleasant to the eyes of the One who picked them.
Victin Luz says
If you lived together to a married man or I should say MEN although in a different occasion , I think their will be something wrong with your MORAL.
DISCREETLY must be taken into consideration before .
rallie florencio says
If you have someone sent to a battle to get killed so you can own his wife, that is even more sinister than just immoral. And if you use your power to be get married to seven hundred women just to have control over your captives that is even more wicked than just immoral.
If you have had a Past President who is more proud to hear he has four women to raise children all at the same time with almost all his children holding office too, that is immoral.
If you have women in congress who has done immorality but can keep it clean by the power, the money and the muscles they possess that is even more wicked.
And yet we allow them to be there without being judged the same way you do to Kris Aquino.
All of them is not without stain but we have to judge them by the way they will handle their office. Compare to those who have clean records who by wanting to stay clean is not brave enough to fight for what they stand for.
Victin Luz says
@rallie ,……I do understand you about Kris. But , what I am telling you , much better if we choice between the three sister’s at wag na si KRIS, at iyon ang ilalaban natin sa 2016 election. Opinion Lang Ito @ rallie ha….nangangarap lang ako na baka pwepwede ang kapatid ni PNOY na mga girls.
rallie florencio says
I am also saying those things about Kris because I believe it should never be our measure all the time to judge a worthy candidate if ever she chooses to run. I understand your point and if you ask me personally, Any of her sisters will represent an ideal woman for any position because of their virtues and how we see them without any stains of political smears. I agree with and may your dream come true.
Using the Bible once more (if I may) Jacob’s brother and David brothers were said to have all the good qualities of men to inherit their father’s right and to lead Israel respectively but from the eyes of many the chosen was proven right by their wisdom despite their weakness. Solomon has to kill his brother so the throne will rightfully be his and disappointing God with his decision to marry seven hundred wives and made concubines of 300 women just to have peaceful coexistence with his enemies showing he lost faith that God is with him and he can achieve peace without resorting to that kind of choice. yet God did not punish him.
moonie says
inept, useless, incapable of making bold decisions, arangkada pinoy, you could have been describing Pres. Noy when he was rep of tarlac. 11 years siya on the job, wala daw siyang law na naipasa. nakaupo lang daw, watching and observing, and watching and observing, he was often friendless in the senate and ignored mostly by many, his opinions rarely sought. then he got challenged and pushed to the top job. once at the helm, it was forward going for him. no turning back, he put the country first, not his family or himself.
mar roxas could yet function. he is working under PNoy, learning and assimilating, learning and assimilating, and observing and watching. maybe now PNoy is mentoring him, who knows? let’s not put all our eggs in one basket in Leni Robredo. if we got plan A, we have got to have plan B as well. just in case.
moonie says
mar roxas has already eaten the humble pie dished out to him, he lost the vice presidency to binay, and was out of circulation and no job for a year. most likely mar knows how it is to be downtrodden and out. he knows he is weak link. and weak link can be made stronger link. and he’s not kawatan, is he?
Victin Luz says
No @ moonie, his siblings on the Araneta side and Korina might be some problem on his good governance incase he will be elected as President of the Republic.
Victin Luz says
If Mar can stop HUETING GAME throughout the country then he will be our best BET for 2016.
moonie says
can risa hontiveros stop jueteng?
Victin Luz says
[email protected] No she can’t stop HUETING either.

Nice. That’s a significant improvement from last time.
Magsaysay and Hontiveros, however could use some help to make it to the magic 12. I hope CPM can do something.
leona says
Hontiveros…is okay. Jun Mag…just riding the ‘good name’ of Ramon…his dad the good one. Jun’s record nothing to say worth much to put him back to public elective office.
My ‘line up’ is crazy worth…at least surely no political dynasty for a beginning. Stop voting for anyone who will propagate it.
Let us send this MESSAGE – No to Political Dynasty! No to UNA No! Vote Wisely Now. No Money But Vote!
Den says
I am a true-blue Martial Law baby, and I thank Alan for this satirical take on how it was back then. Our sense of humor was just about the only thing that Marcos and his cohorts could not take away from us.
With Bong-bong in the Senate, and eyeing the presidency with nostalgic eyes, Imelda in congress and Imee in Ilocos Norte – the Marcoses are truly living it up. Then come JPE and Ongpin peddling their revisionist history of the dark days. Before we knew it, Ferdinand Jr will be President of this country, Imelda will be Queen Mother and Erap Mayor-for-Life of Manila – thanks to stem cell therapy.
Heaven forbids that such should come to pass. Religious pundits have it all wrong that the next pope will be the last and that will be the sign that the world will end. Filipinos will never allow that. We should have the most devastating calamities – natural or man-made. We should have the most number of OFW’s. We should have the largest crocodile, the longest Christmas season, the most corrupt government officials, the most number of political dynasties. Hence, we should have the final say on when the world will end. And that will be when the Marcoses are back in Malacanan. After all, we are also the most sadistic people – we just love inflicting pain on ourselves.
So here’s a toast to Martial Law and all those people who want to make us believe that it was the most wonderful thing that ever happened to this blighted nation. May they all roast in hell.
begalon says
You know what? I have this gut feeling that we are changing. Marcos clan should be voted out of Philippines politics. Wishful thinking, but we are getting smarter.
Alan says
The one thing the Marcoses and their fellow monsters hated back then — which they punished severely — was to be mocked and laughed at. We can do it freely now, so let’s take every opportunity to do so
jorge bernas says
@ Den,
Yes you are RIGHT, We are also the most SADISTIC PEOPLE – We just Love inflicting PAIN on OURSELVES…but NOW if we want CHANGES then WE MUST NOT VOTE THOSE PEOPLE WHO WERE PART OF MARTIAL LAW…Huwag nang hayaan makabalik sa PUWESTO ang mga CORRUPT/BERDUGO/MANDARAYA/IMMORAL/SINUNGALING na mga PULITIKO….
NO TO POLITICAL DYNASTY,
NO TO VOTE BUYING…

On a serious note, read the gripping blow-by-blow account of the momentous days of February 1986, the People’s Power EDSA Revolution.
I strongly think this is a must reading for all those who want to know what really happened behind the scenes during those historical days when the Filipino people rose in revolt against the Marcos dictatorship.

Yvonne says
SOME NOTABLE PASSAGES FROM THE ACCOUNT OF THE EVENTS:
.
.
In a garishly theatrical touch, the river was to be lit up with spotlights as Honasan and his men crossed in their boats. Marcos’s son, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Jr., was to step forward with a megaphone, give the rebels one chance to surrender, and then signal the launch of the counter-attack.
.
..
Jaime Cardinal Sin received a call from Minister Enrile. “Cardinal, I will be dead within one hour.” He seemed to be trembling. “I don’t want to die…if it is possible, do something. I’d still like to live.” He was almost in tears.
.
.
ENRILE: I cannot in my conscience recognize the President as the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces and I am appealing to the other members of the Cabinet to heed the will of the people expressed during the last elections. Because in my own region, I know that we cheated in the elections to the extent of 350,000 votes.

So kung mayroon katoliko na na offend sa ginawa ng simbahan dahil sa tarpulin na yan can the law that was applied to celdran be done the same way to Bishop Vicente Navarra and his cohorts?

When RCC clergy ‘read’ the Gospels, good to listen.
When RCC clergy lip-talks outside of the Gospels and mixed it into politics, DO NOT LISTEN! They are no better than us!
rallie florencio says
Another off topic but I hope this may be important to all. I know many will be appalled but with sincerity and a firm feeling of duty for all to be be informed. As taken from the New Testament on the words of the Churches, Preachers and Ministers compared to the words of Jesus Christ himself.
Matthew 24:4-8, Mark 13: 5-8 and Luke 21:7-11..”Watch out that you are not deceived. Many will come in my name (Jesus) and will claim that I am he (the Christ). They will tell of the coming of an end..Do not follow them.”
Matthew 24:23-25 At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or, ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. For false Christ and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the ELECT- if that were possible. See, I have
you ahead of time.
“MANY” religions in the name of Christ say there are persons coming to impersonate Jesus and claim he is the Christ. I do not know if anyone reading this have seen that many or even few persons claiming what Jesus meant to be a deceiver whom he warned not to follow compared to MANY Churches, preachers and ministers coming out and carrying with the name of Jesus saying to the world that he is the Christ. Can anyone count how many are they in this present time?
Are not most of them in every part of the world preaching the same name and title holding miraculous healing rallies and even making some great signs in the sky.
Is not the Pope having that title as leader of a great religion get Elected? (that is why I have to put all caps letter to the word “elect”.
My question; Who should we believe? the preachers or Jesus to follow?

1. Do homeworks
2. Study hard
3 No cell phone
4. Come home before dark
5. No sleepover in friends house
6. Go to church
7. Follow the house rule
What made gorgeous Marcos martial law very bad, well, Alan knows, we know, but Martial Law could a good thing. My daughter becomes an engineer and my son becomes a nurse.

Congratulations begalon, you have much to be proud of. Buti ka pa. The only engineering that happened in Martial Law was that the Marcoses engineered massacres, torture and large scale transfer of stolen wealth from here to Swiss bank accounts

true, alan, how true. my parents once kept a newspaper clipping and hid it so well, they forgot where they placed it. I was told it was about a man that has enough of the marcoses and made an attempt at demento klepto’s life. sinaksak siya while on stage in front of everyone. we never got to know more about the man. I presumed he was given the harshest of corporal punishments, his family annihilated most likely.
Alan says
If I remember correctly the man was an artist / painter. He managed to slash the Klepto in the arms before he was shot to pieces by the security
duquemarino says
@Alan
I don’t think Imelda’s would-be assassin was an artist but merely a house painter (I maybe wrong, though).
But there was an artist/painter who also figured in an attempted assassination during martial law. It was during the visit of Pope Paul VI in the Philippines.
As Pope Paul VI was descending from the stairs of the plane, a man garbed as a priest with a dagger lunged at the pope but was over-powered by security men.
The would-be assassin was Benjamin Mendoza from Bolivia, he was incarcerated at the National Bilibid Prison but earned a living by selling his paintings done inside the prison.
duquemarino says
@Alan
Here’s the link on the would-be assassin of Pope Paul VI, http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1356&dat=19810215&id=rxEwAAAAIBAJ&sjid=qAUEAAAAIBAJ&pg=6905,7248075
Cited in Wikipedia, Imelda’s would be assassin was Carlito Dimahilig
duquemarino says
Correction, it happened in 1970 before martial law was declared.
Cha says
@moonie,
Here’s a video of that failed assassination attempt:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTUO0O2-CgU
duquemarino says
I saw this then being aired by the government channel. It happened at Nayong Pilipino, when the would-be assassin was subdued by the the Presidential Security Guards they took turns kicking the body in front of the camera.
The “masamang damo” Imelda merely suffered cuts on her fingers/hand.
moonie says
thank you, cha, duquemarino. I have always been wondering about that man. magsisindi ako ng kandila para sa kanya. thanks again, cha.
begalon says
Ouch! Perhaps, I dont deserve that praise. You see, I was young (21yo), damn, and full of cum na probinsyano in 1972. What I know really that darkest period in our history was that the criminals were running away and disappearing, so I thought I could help chase and find and jail them, so I join the Philippine Constabulary, but I bailed out in 1974 joining the US Navy. Military discipline had changed my life.
My argument really; there is a good thing in Martial Law in obeying the law using military discipline without taking away the principle of democracy which is our freedom in pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness.
So, my question to you; is it possible in the Philippines?
Alan says
these are the ancient universal problems in popular politics:
(1) Everyone of us wants a dictatorship — provided WE are the dictators
(2) When Filipinos dream of authoritarian regimes they have Singapore in mind. But history shows it’s more likely to be Zimbabwe that will be the result
(3) Once we give up our freedoms to a dictator, we can’t change our minds and ask for them back
Me? I think there’s more potential in democracy, but it’s a nonstop process that requires monitoring and improvement 24/7
begalon says
Thanks Alan. Yes, I agree. Democracy is not a perfect form of government, so let us continue improving it 24/7. “Democracy is not perfect, but it is the best there is.” Churchil.
Alan says
you have it right begalon. Making a lot of noise, being makulit, keeping ourselves informed about what our politicans are up to, raising the standards of education, joining civil society groups and networks, being involved in causes and issues, making fun of those in power so that they feel uncomfortable, holding those in power accountable — these are some of the things citizens in a democracy can do to keep the pot boiling. When a citizen in a democracy says “I hate politics” or “don’t rock the boat” that’s the start of giving up to the scumbags
begalon says
Yeah Baby! What you and your hubby Raissa are doing is inline with the proposition of nurturing and cleansing the tree of liberty (Jefferson), let us make lots of noise and make these people in power a tiny bit honest. Just a little bit, a bite at a time will eventually eat up the elephant.
So, I will go along with rocking the boat. Let us make more people get in the boat. Its effect could be awesome.
raissa says
Gracias, amigo.
rallie florencio says
Democracy is probably the near perfect form of government. People just fail to recognize what true leadership should be, We say the nation to be run “by the people, for the people and by the people” is a Democratic system.
Where we fail is after we elected our leaders, who are merely supposed to be the ruler meaning they will measure each need if the appropriation is right, just and fair for everyone..
What people do is to expect the officials to do the thing they are supposed to do for themselves, they expect the leaders always on the front line and instead of being of service to the people, the people now look at them as benevolent God who has the power over them instead of the other way around.
Remember their campaign is always full of promise “I will be your servant” and once elected it becomes the other way around. People of the masses gather around him (pardon my word) like dog wanting to have a piece of scrap or wanting to lick his hands for more favor. This is a daily task for many elected officials in their office, naturally the officials will be elated by that gestures of the people and he will come to think the power is in his hands. The officials therefore, instead of making proposals and laws for a better way to life they spend more time in handling out they believe is much easier to do to stay permanently in his position than do his sworn duty.
With that kind of power now in the mind, he can decide to execute, delay or completely ignore the real need of the people. And the people instead of working together to make the nation better, they are so divided in their ways caused by selfish motivation. Leaders may have been overwhelmed with these loads on their shoulders thus develop that preservation for the self for fear of ending his personal career and worth go down the drain thus lead many to corruption and grafts.
People should understand that a great leader in a Democratic government is about making people move on with their lives in joy, harmony and peace without his name written in every wall…When I was working with the late Mayor Nemesio Yabut of Makati, every project that people see on the posters is “Project of the People of Makati” and his name never appeared.
leona says
Martial Law and ‘principle of democracy’ – is like oil and water…the two cannot mix or join into one.
The only ‘good thing’ in Martial Law is ‘nobody’ can go against it. It can make the whole country like a military camp! …and it is impossible to make the ‘whole people’ as ‘soldiers.’
So, the answer to your question “Is it possible”…it was but did not last …only for 20 long years! Why? As I said, the two [ML and democracy] cannot mix!
begalon says
Leona dear, do you like salad dressing?
Well, mixing olive oil (democracy), vinegar, and dash of water (ML)depending on the ratio of proportion, you concocted a fine salad dressing.

ang daming storya about Madame Klepto
leona says
Martial Law was to perpetuate F. Marcos in power until death. He wanted more of the 2nd term of 4 years in office. So? Martial Law it was!
Martial Law by simple decree, confiscated all agricultural lands! Kuno, under agrarian reform. No money to pay anyway for those lands. Until now our lands have not been paid.
Martial Law, kuno, was constitutional: Marcos was president, prime minister, speaker of the Assembly, dictator, jailer, warden, judge and the highest court of the land, businessman, chief banker, depositor, investor, law or decree maker …and atbpa pa…anything at all, he was all in that! Can one think where, when, what and why…he was not?
Martial Law…created the Philippines internationally as the SICK MAN OF ASIA! Lupusin disease for 20 + Years with many of it’s evil effects still so much around until now.
To avoid Martial Law we are going into Family Dynasty…not much difference as to MONEY and POWER and RULE…over more little KINGDOMS. Curse on these kingdoms to come!

What martial law?
A taste of truncheon on my back and the suffocating tear gas during one of the rallies I attended is still clear in my mind.
Still clearer in my mind is that I had to slid my frail body through closing door of one of the establishments along C.M. Recto.

tama ka alan. what martial law?
wala nun yo!
ang saya nga noon.
12 yrs old pa lang ako noon. ang saya-saya talaga.
andaming namamatay nang kusa.
ang daming nawawala, mind you, kusang nawawala.
totoong mababait sila. tama, laging nakangiti.
gusto mong mag-bike maghapon? itanong mo kay a. ureta.
o ano may martial law ba?
si ninoy, matigas lang ang ulo. sinabi ng huwag bumalik ng pnas at baka ipabaril nya ang sarili nya. ay, naku, pusila…

is it too late for cryogenic, georgeous hot lips’ body frozen and preserved so he can be brought completely back to life when son becomes president one day? he’ll be there attending the ceremony in full regalia, bright as the sun, his wife once again singing dahil sa yo, and feelings. wow, wow, boteng umiilaw! sapak and apak ng johnson floor wax, that’s my lolo’s fav 70’s expressions I borrowed.

To complete the retro vibe, there will be: DISCO MARCOS http://hotmanila.ph/OutofFocus/2010/jibjab02.html

I have seen the video, and I believe that it is best not to go through the 70s again. :)

Ghastly, right? ;-)
tristanism says
Thank you very much, Alan.
We need more martial law materials.
Alan says
You’re welcome. I’ve always maintained that we need an entire institute and museum given over to the crimes of the Marcos dictatorship — similar to Berlin’s “Topography of Terror”, a documentation center for the crimes of the Nazis. Quite apart from this, I believe Philippine schoolbooks should emphasize just how bestial the Martial Law era was, and name names
