It was by chance that I met Shayeed Kiram, a son of Raja Muda (Crown Prince) Agbimuddin Kiram who is now in Sabah facing the Malaysian armed forces.
I wanted to take a photo of Dayang Dayang (Princess) Nazhra, daughter of Sultan Jamulul Kiram III, but a man was in the way. I politely asked him to stand aside. He did, quickly and meekly.
That was when Nazhra told me “that was Raja Muda’s son”.
I hastily apologized to the man — and then asked if I could interview him.
He said I could provided I did not show his entire face. I videoed the part below which I thought was most important.
Shayeed narrated how he and his family had resided in Sabah during his childhood.
They went there to accompany their grandfather, Sultan Punjungan – younger brother of Esmail Kiram – because Malaysia’s first prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman had made a promise to make Punjungan the Sultan of Sabah.
In other words, to recognize Punjungan who was then the Raja Muda of Sultan Esmail Kiram, as the head of one of the royal houses in the newly-federated state of Malaysia.
Shayeed recalled it was for this reason that Raja Muda Agbimuddin and his family stayed with Sultan Punjungan in Sabah for a decade, waiting for that promise to be fulfilled. Shayeed said he studied in an elementary school in Sabah.
It was also for this reason that his father’s journey to Lahad Datu, Sabah last month was a coming home.
Shayeed wanted to go with his father to Lahad Datu, but was told to stay in Manila because the family needed someone who knew the Internet.
Later, he told me his father went to Sabah ready to die – he had said goodbye.
I have no way of confirming whether Malaysia’s first PM did make this promise to the Kiram family. But it is worth noting that Sabah is not and has never been represented by a royal family to this day.

The Japanese tried to use its mighty arms, shoulder, elbows and legs brutally through kamikaze during World War 11 but lost the war when America dropped two atomic bombs in Japan. Moral of the story : a country can’t always win its war by killing and dying people, at the end of the day, a monumental issue with another could be resolved by subdued course of action as people are more amenable to a peaceful talk wherein matters could be more crystallized.

On February 18, Philippine and Malaysian officials asked Sultan Kiram to order his men to come home. No charges would be made against his followers on one condition. Get rid of their weapons by either burying or hiding them. Philippines and Malaysia promised to revive the Sabah claim just to end the stand off. This was the prevailing situation before PNoy went on TV on February 26 to ask the Kiram group in Sabah to come home. The rest is history.
Is it still possible now to revive that “window of opportunity” prior to February 26 in the light of what transpired in the past week?

A promise unfulfilled by Malaysia’s first first Prime Minister, says Raja Muda’s son
@7 A promise unfulfilled . . .
According to the line of succession illustrated by ABS-CBN, Datu Punyungan Kiram was the crown prince when Sultan Esmail Kiram, his older brother, ruled the Sultanate. But later on Datu Punyungan was stripped of his title. Another article said that Datu Punyungan was relieved of his title because of his prolonged stay in Sabah despite order from Sultan Esmail to come home to Sulu.
So, it appears that because of the promise of former PM Tungku Abdul Rahman to make him the chief of Sabah State, Datu Punyungan Kiram defied his older brother. In other words, he abdicated or renounced impliedly the throne to become the head of State of Sabah. Anyway, his becoming the Sultan of Sulu was contingent on the death of Sultan Esmail, which event was still unforeseen. It was alleged, however, that Sultan Esmail died of poisoning in 1974, and his son Mahakuttah Kiram succeeded him to reign until his death in 1986. And the head of the Sultanate of Sulu has remained vacant to present.
My other point is that Jamalul Kiram III, being the brother of Raja Muda Agbimuddin Kirm and the oldest son of Datu Punyungan, had lost his succession right to the throne. That was after Datu Punyungan was stripped of his title as the crown prince. This must be the reason why the other heirs to the Sulu Sultanate refuse to acknowledge him as their ruler. And Jamalul Kiram III jumped over the other claimants to the throne and engineered the Sabah invasion to blaze the trail towards his own and his brother’s ascendancy to the throne.
A “vaulting ambition”.

It seems that burying or hiding weapons by Tausugs in Sabah is not new to them. According to an article in the Manila Times which Malaysian Chronicle cited on March 6, 2013, the Malaysian trained MNLF fighters hid deep in the Sabah jungle huge arsenal of weapons provided by Libya then.

Proposal
1. Since Kiram forced the issue and now Majority of the Filipinos agree that the Royalty (no matter who is the actual rightful heir, it should come from their family anyway) of Sulu owns Sabah, the rational Philippine Government should proceed to table this issue in name peace and co-prosperity between two countries.
2. The Philippine Government should study how to approach this delicately and fairly for the equal benefit of the Philippines, the Royalty of Sulu, and the interest of Malaysia.
3.Our government can pursue this in a diplomatic manner but with the conditional ceasefire that the Royal Sulu shall not reign all his followers not to cross Sabah and cease any armed attacks.
Scenarios
A. Malaysia does not want to even talk about this issue then the Government should immediately go to the UN and lobby that this issue should be heard. The advantage with this is that Malaysia will be exposed as the renter who acts like an owner or worst a landgrabber. Another thing is that the ramifications of the attention will also bring out the parallels of the China’s forced occupation of our shoals.
A.1 The Royalty of Sulu has the option to continue the armed struggle. They can adopt the Palestinian strategy, attack Israel until Israel agree to sit with them with US as brokers. Freedom fighters of Sulu is the armed wing sepafate from the Philippine Government and shall be disowned by the Philippines but the Filipino people should show their support to pressure Malaysia that the people are behind these Freedom Fighters.
B. Malaysia agrees. Then the Royalty of Sulu should be vigilant and be hands on in the negotiations since the Politicians has the history of double crossing the weakest party. Mindanaons should show their solidarity byblobbying that part of proceeds of any settlement and or revenue shall be allocated to Mindanao. The government should not be greedy since this money was not there in the first place if not for the resolved and courage of the Royalty of Sulu and its followers. This will also build up the confidence and self respect of the oerrenially discriminated Muslims!
I may add more later and you guys are free to add, however my ipad is running out of juice!

@Vibora,
We need to see the bigger picture. It is not about MNLF or Kiram or personalities, it is about our sovereignity, pride, and potential wealth that our country could enjoy. It is high time to pursue this issue.
Review your history. Desperate people resort to violence. Very little to lose for them, yet the windfall is great!
What is happening is the logical consequence of the struggle. Those lives lost are little compared to the lives lost due to ineptitude and corruption in our government. We need to think like strategists and find out elegant plans to get what we want and reclaim what is ours.
I know it is hard to separate our emotions with the logic but we need to explore ideas which would be beneficial to our country. As long as we agree that Sabah s ours, then differences on strategies could be harmonized!
baycas says
By self-determination Sabah belongs to the Sabahans.
Contemporary thinking in International Law dictates that Self-determination trumps Historical claims even if the latter is true.
Philippines and Malaysia already agreed on this even before Tita Cory’s time and both nations are bound by this principle in territorial disputes.

Israel was not a country then, but they started as Freedom Fighters too, they successfully taken thevland by force.
America was a. Colony, then there was uprising.
Palestine terrorized Israel, did execute the Munich assasinations and now they have recognition.

Bonifacio, Aguinaldo and a lot of Filipino Heroes started as Freedom Fighters too.
Vietcongs defeated the Americans.
Che and Fidel got Cuba.
Etc…
Alan says
All of the examples you cite have one thing in common: force. So you are advocating war? Killing? violence? death? destruction?
Parekoy says
Not really. As an analyst, I’m looking at the options at he point of view of the Sultan. Also I’m replying to Vibora’s questions.
Let us analyze Malaysias tactics during the 70s.
Malaysia’s strategy was to fund the MNLF to keep our Military busy in fighting them in Mindanao and not enough time and resources to pursue the Sabah claim. I respect their strategy for they were able to buy time to progress, buikt up their industries and modernize their military and defense complex to be ready andvself sufficient to counter a military offensive by another non-nuclear country. However, I don’ t think they are ready for the guerilla tactics of their former MNLF allies.
Alan says
As an analyst have you considered the possibility that the violence will spread right back to Mindanao, triggering off another set of violent small wars? Have you considered the possibility of small terrorist groups in Mindanao killing, bombing, destroying infrastructure in order to set off yet another AFP onslaught that will once again tie down the Phil government in another pointless war that will drain its treasury and resources and energy?
Vibora says
@parekoy,
Can you please tell me who is the real Sultan of Sulu? How many claimants are there? What will happen to other tribes originally living in Sabah? Does the Sultanate still wants the Philippine to represent their claim? If given the right to govern Sabah, will it be under the Philippine and follow our constitution? Will they declare independence and include Sulu and Palawan?
Alan says
Good points Vibora. None of these pertinent, crucial questions has actually been answered.

@Baycas since you know more about laws, when malaysia branded the “royal sulu army” as terrorist does it mean that it will have an effect on their claim to sabah?
Kasi naalala ko parating sinasabi ang mga katagang ito: “No negotiations with the terrorist”.
Parekoy says
That is a farce that nobody negotiates with the terrorist.
We have to understand the process. First they are labeled terrorist to diminish their claim therefore a stand off.
When the Freedom Fighters aka Terrorists Malaysias eyes inflict considerable damage that it affects them economically and politically, then there will be negotiations. Now the Terrorist will have a political wing, or it may morph into a political wing which will be a partner of the Philippine govt and more legitimacy of the claimants will be gained.
When the negotiators cease the armed struggle until reasoable agreement is reach, then the Terroristst turn Negotistors are now Statesmen.
So that is the metamorphosis of Freedom Fighters.
Note that this is great opportunity for the Philippines and Sulu as long as the Philippine government abandon using the Military to support the Freedom Fighters. But in this high stakes game with great rewards but with silly mistakes on the part of our government, that could turn to war.
Note tat Malaysia has plenty to lose, Kiram et el almost nil, the Philippne government should just maintain on the political side it is a win-draw situation.
An explosion in KL will cost the Malaysian government hundreds of millions of dollars r even billion as overall cost from loss of business, loss of tourism, military expenditure, and policing anf security cost will sureky go up. If we study what happened after 911 in the US, billions of dollars were lost due to Bin Laden’s deeds. It is not farfetch that these Freedom Fighters, who were former MNLF and possibly have an Al Qaeda connections can borrow from that playbook.
What I’m sharing here are analyses that I assumed were already considered by the Malaysian Intelligence community, note that they might not be experiences in war but they have the resources and brain trust that can fathom the intricacy of insurgency. Note that they have Internal Security Act that makes their job a bit easier and a controlled press, which are valuable in times of uncertainty. But I still believe that if these scenarios are known to everybody, then the parties will rationally play the game and find the saddle points, which will be beneficial to everybody.
What I’m worried though is the caliber of PNoy’s strategist and PNoys bungling of publicly berating Kiram et al. Morons can really screw up the golden opportunity hat is now wiithin our reach, it is only a matter of spending a cluster of neurons if ever PNoys men have them.

Though it will diminish the trust and confidence Malaysia may extend to the Sultanate. Not to mention, the retribution that Malaysia may exact to the armed “invaders”.

This Sabah crisis is a legacy from Gloria Arroyo to PNOY, like wise the CBCP ( SUV 4×4, privileges) and the China territorial disputes ( wherein she gave China exploraton rights to our island in South China Sea)
When Arroyo was the president, she courted the Sultan of Sulu by making him her adviser for Muslim affairs but the real reason in doing so was to prevent the Sultan giving her political disorder and violence in Sulu and Tawitawi which really worked because there was never a time the Sultan brought her the problem of Sabah like what he is doing to PNOY now. Gloria gave him his most coveted recognition and importance ( and privileges/ favors) in the Mindanao politics which PNOY has not bestow to him, that the Sultan is so enveloped with resentment and revengeful tactics, thus the SABAH CRISIS FOR PNOY AS HIS PUNISHMENT FOR HIM, a punishment that backfired so tragically/ horribly, a punishment saying this the price you get for ignoring me, your political destruction on your reforms and your daang matuwid. THIS IS AT TIMES LIKE THIS THAT WE FULLY SUPPORT OUR PRESIDENT ALL THE WAY BECAUSE IT MEANS THE CONTINUATION OF OUR PRESIDENT’S REFORMS AND HIS DAANG MATUWID FOR THE GROWTH, DEVELOPMENT AND BETTERMENT OF OUR COUNTRY. LET US NOT BE DISTRACTED BY THE DISGRUNTLED PEOPLE WHOSE AIM IS TO DESTROY THE LIVES OF THE FILIPINO PEOPLE AS WHOLE, WHOSE AIM IS TO DERAIL THE ERADICATION OF CORRUPTION WHICH IS THE PRIMARY SOURCE OF PEOPLES’ POVERTY AND HARDSHIP. mABUHAY KA PNOY.
Sorry I am not shouting just trying to emphasize my points.

Point taken!!! I suggest that PNOY take the step further. Expedite the prosecution of all criminals and corrupt people in this country including his corrupt friends, relatives, and benefactors of his campaign.
and i might add, increase funding for education, institute one child policy for parents who cant afford to raise their kids (RH bill doesnt quite cut it, the philippine archipelago isnt getting any bigger, we should take note of the law of supply and demand).
Alan says
You forgot world peace. He should also bring about world peace. While you of course take a healthful snorezzzzzzzzz
josua says
yeah right, world peace is great. But i still think you only get it by wielding a really big stick.
you see, if we were more powerful than malaysia, you think PNOY or any president would hesitate to use force to reclaim Sabah? its always about who got the bigger stick. unfortunately for us, we’re all talk but no bite, but not the Tausugs.
Now, if that unilateral ceasefire is true and malaysia respond to it favorably, then Kiram got what he wanted, to get evryone on the table and talk. But look, the same peple are there, Misuari and his cohorts, sounds like dejavu, but at least theyre not fighting us, theyr fighting the malaysians. im sure world peace can wait a little more longer.
having a snore is really good, see, i think PNOY has actually done a good job by cheering the malaysians bec now the MNLF will do their best terrorising their previous masters. What a lesson to be learned.
Alan says
The problem with using a big stick is that somebody will always have a bigger stick. Guaranteed. Or as somebody said about George Dubya Bush and Iran — “yeehaw is not a foreign policy”
josua says
i completely agree, right now malaysia has the bigger stick. so i understand why PNOY is cheering the malaysians. but what he didnt realize is he just unintentionaly stirred the deep seated pride of the tausugs/MNLF. now we know already how we suffered at the hands of the MILF/MNLF. Im sure malaysia knows very well whats in their plates right now. good luck to them.

It’s true Malaysia hasn’t been fighting as long as Filipinos have. But anybody who thinks the violence will confine itself to Sabah and will not cross over to Mindanao is living in a fantasy world. It’s all about politics.
Hataman and Misuari are the major contenders for the governorship of ARMM in the coming elections.
Hataman – administration candidate, Misuari – obviously opposition candidate.
PNoy is president of 95 million Filipinos.
moonie says
and now, misuari wanted to be negotiator in the sabah conflict. sultan will make sure of misuari’s success in negotiation, and so, paved the way for misuari to win in the coming election. I hope they have taken into consideration that the people of mindanao are not that easy to fool anymore. the sultan lost in the election of 2007, this time, his manok misuari might just lost in this year’s election too.
apparently, they have not taken into consideration that malaysia might just reject misuari as negotiator. and that’s exactly what malaysia did: reject misuari as negotiator.

Parekoy says
Please don’t belittle Misuari, he is a frmidable warrior and even Malaysia knows his cunning.
Rememberbthe massacre of the generals?
Misuari is a survivor, a warrior and an enemy to contend with. He knows how to play the geopolitical game and this incident in Sabah seems to have his fingerprints on it. He knws war, he knows that lives are to be sacrificed as part of the larger goal.
I’m no fan of him either but itbdoes not mean I don’t respect his skills.
Alan says
Raissa personally knows Misuari — she was a guest of his house once when Desdemona was still alive. You can ask her in private what she thinks
moonie says
I’d be happier is misuari works for the common good. also, he could donate blood periodically and be prospective organ donor.

What happen to the Sulu of Sultanate nine (9) Principal Heirs are they neglected on this situation? Are they not the REAL one that is being recognized by the Sabah State of Malaysia.
Mel says
Good question, Sabah has many claimants to the Sultanate of Sulu.
Read @Vibora’s questions: Can you please tell me who is the real Sultan of Sulu? How many claimants are there? What will happen to other tribes originally living in Sabah? Does the Sultanate still wants the Philippine to represent their claim? If given the right to govern Sabah, will it be under the Philippine and follow our constitution? Will they declare independence and include Sulu and Palawan?

– Who’s the rightful heir?
– Before they dictate, impose and hold to ransom the country’s foreign relations with its ASEAN neighbor, they must sort out amongst themselves who their official Sultan is.

May pagkakamali… it was taken with several media persons.
Some media photographer(s) and/or writers may have misattributed those snapshots out of sync. May not necessarily Jacel Kiram’s fault. Read below or follow the GMA Blog link.
That tablet she’s holding belongs to a journalist. On Sunday afternoon, while journalists were inside the Kiram’s home and were waiting for news from Sabah to trickle in, Princess Jacel sat beside a group of media men and chatted with them. Then one of the journalists showed that photo to her. They began discussing about the photo and apparently, she made comments about it. She was told the photo was posted online. Initially, it was thought that the ‘victims’ were Sultan’s men. A TV reporter (not me, hehe) was asking for the website where the photo was lifted but no one cared to answer. The Princess, while looking at the photo, caught the attention of photojournalists who were also there. They immediately took photos of her holding the tablet. The photogs, around 5-6 of them inside that small space in the sala, swarmed and cajoled her to show it to them so they can shoot photos.
