The best time to laugh is when tensions are high

Filipinos are extra-good at humor because we’ve seen and experienced so much pain.

Laughter is our way of dealing with the pain.

And so I’d like to encourage you guys to read my hubby Alan’s two latest humor columns.

The one today is entitled Fly-by-night nursing schools? What?

Hello, my name is Jumbo Urinal. I’m the owner, manager, director, main stockholder, accounting officer and maintenance man of a very prestigious nursing school.

Nalulungkot kami, because there are really nasty reports in the media that our country is full of so-called “substandard” nursing schools in the Philippines. There are even accusations that many of them are fly-by-night operations just out to make money while giving defective education. And that they only manage to stay open by pulling political strings and asking certain congresswomen to stop government from closing them down.

That’s a lie! Nothing could be further from the truth! Let’s take MY school as an example. I happen to think we meet all the requirements of a good nursing school.

What are those requirements?

One, it should have a good name. Ours is “Have Mercy and Save Us All Mama Mary School of OK Na Yan Nursing.” Definitely prestigious.

In closing, let me also share with you three posters I found on the Internet. Two are a reaction of Netizens to Senatorial candidate Cynthia Villar’s now infamous remarks about nurses – for which she has apologized:

The last was made by Alan following the Church defiance to pull down their “Team Patay” posters:

hahaha…there’s still high tension wires sparking on His Holiness’ election! This reported news in many news sectors –

“On Day 2 of the Francis pontificate, the Vatican denounced news reports in Argentina and beyond resurrecting allegations that the former Jorge Mario Bergoglio failed to openly confront the junta responsible for kidnapping and killing thousands of people in a “dirty war” to eliminate leftist opponents.

Bergoglio, like most Argentines, didn’t publicly confront the dictators who ruled from 1976-83, while he was the leader of the country’s Jesuits. And human rights activists differ on how much blame he personally deserves.

Top church leaders had endorsed the junta and some priests even worked alongside torturers inside secret prisons. Nobody has produced any evidence suggesting Bergoglio had anything to do with such crimes. But many activists are angry that as archbishop of Buenos Aires for more than a decade, he didn’t do more to support investigations into the atrocities.”

Another option…to ‘resign’? I told ya, it should have been Cardinal Tagle! He was neither a bishop during the Marcos Martial Law era! He’s clean & green. The papacy election ain’t finish yet I think.

PH may send troops to Sabah, says Miriam

MANILA – The Philippines may deploy its armed forces to Sabah if the violence worsens and innocent Filipinos there are put in harm’s way, a senator said on Friday.

Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago, former chair of the Senate foreign relations committee, explained that although international law prohibits the use of force, certain situations allow countries to send armed forces to rescue their citizens in another territory.

In the case of Sabah, she said force may be used if the lives of Filipinos are genuinely in danger, Malaysia is unwilling or unable to ensure their safety, the Philippines does not pursue any purpose other than rescue, and the scale and effects of the military force are proportionate to the purpose of the operation.

“As much as possible, we want to avoid the use of force,” Santiago said in a speech before a gathering of nurses on Friday. “But if this is the attitude of Malaysia … then we shall avail of the exception.”

She stressed, however, that using force should be the Philippines’ last resort.

Santiago proposed that the Philippines and Malaysia agree first to have a third party that will investigate the clashes between Filipino and Malaysian forces in Sabah. This can be a former head of state of any Southeast Asian country, she said.

The senator said that under the 1907 Hague Convention for the Pacific Settlement of Disputes, a fact-finding investigation can be launched to help solve disputes through negotiation, mediation, or conciliation.

Speaking to reporters after her speech, however, Santiago described Malaysia’s position in the ongoing conflict as “intellectually challenged.”

She particularly criticized Malaysia’s use of fighter jets to neutralize some 200 forces of the sultanate of Sulu, who went to Sabah in early February to assert that the territory is theirs.

“It’s like a using a scud missile to kill a fly,” Santiago said.

    No abandonment of Sabah claim

Santiago, an expert in international law, stressed that the Philippines has not relinquished its claim to Sabah.

She said that should the territorial dispute be elevated to the International Court of Justice, the Philippines would win on the basis of a document showing that the sultanate of Sulu did not cede but only leased Sabah to the British North Borneo Company in 1878.

In 1946, the company ceded Sabah to the British Crown. Malaysia then included Sabah in its newly formed federation in 1963.

Even the argument that native Sabahans chose to be part of Malaysia would not hold water, Santiago said.

“First of all, there has to be sovereignty possessed by the state as represented by its government,” she said. “The population by itself cannot change the nature of that sovereignty.”

Santiago, meanwhile, commended President Aquino’s “sober” handling of the Sabah issue.

“I commend him for his caution because it is so easy to play hero to a momentary crowd than to play statesman to an impatient crowd,” she said.

I am and am not laughing…I don’t know. Michaelangelo must be the one laughing to his heart’s mischief…painting those human figures up there in the ceiling of Sistine Chapel all undressed, in different poses! The great painter/sculptor will never finish his laughs everytime a papal voting is made.

He knew when is the best time to laugh when tensions are high as the title of this space is stated. Look up!…Pray…Laugh…and Vote!

The irony for the men of the cloth! :) Obviously Michaelangelo and the other artists during his era were not prude, and the same could be said of the religious authorities that time. These paintings and sculptures would not be in church, would they, if the priests objected to nudity?

      • leona says

        March 13, 2013 at 8:05 PM

The movie The Agony and the Ecstasy, if I’m correct, showed the objections of some Cardinals during ‘Angelo’s work up the ceiling, and they opposed strongly to the Pope who went to see for His Holiness if true that naked ‘symbols of humanity’ was really up there. Lo! It was! …

‘Angelo was up there finishing his works and was called down by His Holiness…’ANGELO! COME DOWN AT ONCE!

…WHAT IS THIS…YOU HAVE PAINTED, ADAM SHOWING HIS P p p…nis! ‘Angelo…answered “Your Grace, God did not create Adam covered already! NO SOEN at the time Your Grace.

…A leaf must be covering that P p p..nis! …said Cardinal Usyusi. NO! …cried ‘Angelo. If you change anything of what I have painted and I’m not yet finished, I will not finish and will leave all this work unfinish…

POPE …leave it…there’s no IP or cyber internet yet! The world will love these looking up and straining their necks where there SINS are!

BWE! …added ‘Angelo to the Cardinal Usyusi…went up back, laughing….and tsk tsk
tsk. History was painted up there in the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel…human frailty.

Papal conclave to elect new pope set to begin.

    Favorite Contenders for Pope

    I
    Odilo Pedro Scherer
    63, Brazil
    Archbishop of São Paulo
Of the Roman Curia (Catholic Church’s governing body), he has German ancestry, an administrator, he firmly advocates evangelism, not charismatic enough to lead the church and has been unable to stem the loss of members to evangelical movements in Brazil.

    II
    Angelo Scola
    71, Italy
    Archbishop of Milan
“He is a fierce, media savvy intellectual, who peppers his writings with citations from Shakespeare and others like Jack Kerouac. His foundation is a platform for dialogue with Islam.”

He is Italian. He was involved for years with the Communion and Liberation movement, which has had close ties with Italian politicians. Some think his speeches are overly intellectual.

    III
    Luis Antonio G. Tagle
    55, Philippines
    Archbishop of Manila
Charismatic and humble with a Chinese mother and roots in the Philippines, he would be a pope from the developing world. His charisma has been compared with John Paul II.

He is one of the youngest cardinals. Conservatives may consider his scholarly work too liberal.

With 115 Cardinal votes, Italy has 28 Cardinals, the United States is second with 11. Altogether 48 countries are represented among the cardinal- electors.

Italy’s anti-mafia police raid offices in diocese of frontrunner Cardinal Angelo Scola

“In a homily before thousands of pilgrims and the most senior figures in the church, Angelo Sodano, the dean of the college of cardinals, made a last-ditch attempt to banish infighting, as he extolled the virtues of unity amid diversity.

But even as preparations for the mass were being made, Cardinal Angelo Scola, the archbishop of Milan – and reportedly the hot favourite to be the next pope – suffered a blow.

Anti-mafia detectives swooped on homes, offices, clinics and hospitals in Lombardy, the region around Milan, and elsewhere. A statement said the dawn raids were part of an investigation into “corruption linked to tenders by, and supplies to, hospitals”.”

      Who’s your pick?

I am leaning towards Luis Antonio G. Tagle. A big possibility of being the next Pope of the Roman Catholic Church for the 21st century, being the Asian Century.

But if tradition still holds sway in the scheme of ‘things’, it could be Angelo Scola of Italy.

Should majority of the American Cardinals consolidate their votes toward an Asian growth – the Philippines’ Cardinal is a front runner with supporting Cardinal votes from Africa, Asia, Latin America and Oceania.

      • Mel says

        March 13, 2013 at 4:26 AM

        TRUE

“Supporters on- and offline say Tagle will be able to address issues like alleged sexual abuse by priests, and the waning numbers of Catholics among the young.

“If ever he becomes pope, what will he be bringing to the church leadership? And precisely this — the energy, the energy to engage the young people, the energy to speak their language, the energy to listen to them,” said Emmanuel Alfonso, executive director of Jesuit Communications.” – Tagle a ‘much discussed’ cardinal

He’s clean and uncontroversial, the second is the same as the former Pope.

I am a Muslim, but I wish the Catholic Church well in choosing their next leader. May he be strong enough to lead the church, and be a shining example to the flock. Hopefully someone charming and charismatic enough as the late Pope John Paul II, but equally fair and firm to everyone.

        Millions are hoping the same,

That’s probably not going to happen; instead of wishing curses on fellow Muslims maybe you can come up with non-violent ideas on resolving the problem

there is no solution to that conflict, if i live in your house and say this is mine inlcuding what is inside, you will kill me, least is call the police and so on and so fort…

Its the same thing in Malaysia, the Sultan owns the place from his grand grand parents, it is being owned by Malaysia, only God can stop the Malaysian grip to the land that dont belong to them.

One of the reasons of Malaysian att8ack>>>0billion ringgits or whatever domination are coming from Pal Oil industry in Sabah, the Malaysian could not afford to lose that…

The olden Brits were renting the land owned by the great gand parents of Sultan to develop what is now Sabah….by the token of time thru ages, the new Malaysian thought, the land belongs to them…

Before 1946…good candidates. In 1946…medyo good pa rin. In 1950s…semi-na lang. In 1960s..umpisa na maging gods. In 1970s…may mga itim na na pakpak…In 1980s…medyo halo-halo na: actors sumali na…In 1990s kasama na ang mga komedians…In 2000s…kalahati na mga artistahon at komedians at matatada at sirang isip…In 2013 kasama na mga anak, convicteds, mga asawa.

Por example: isang kandidato ay ang alam lang ay ‘Po”…ako si po, Opo, anak ni Po, bakit po, sigue na Po, wala po, o.k. ka Po, alam ko po, si Po, Bam Po, at ano-anong Po!

God does work in mysterious ways. She was starting to look like a shoo-in for Senator. Then she opens her big mouth wide and wreckless. I never had any intention of voting for her anyway. And now, she’s self-destructing. Hanep ng buhay talaga.

I will not be mean to cynthia. she is not perfect. she made a mistake and she’ll learn. she’s in team PNoy. and because she’s in team PNoy, I’ll give her 2nd chance. so move about, cynthia, put yourself forward and redeem yourself, smile and be seen with nurses, talk to them and ask questions. support their cause. there is always room for improvement.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Socialist Then they came fof the Trade Unionists, and I did not out speak out— Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me— And there was no one left to speak for me. —Martin Niemöller (1892-1984)
