THESE RED BANNERS, those colorful streamers
Had reached their obsolescence just like the hammer sickle of the gone USSR.
Red Banners and shouting streamers, they have lost their clout and meanings.
They look so paid for. OCCUPY EDSA did not make use of those showy symbols.

The REDS in China find it SCARY to see silent, humble persons start gathering
in any public place. One becomes two, then three then four not even talking just
standing there , quiet, harmless and very peaceful. Authorities shake in their boots
When they sense members of the FALUN GONG Start to gather in a street corner.

Can you imagine more than 100,000 people as was in EDSA or or will be in LUNETA
very quiet, NOT EVEN PRAYING, no banners and streamers, YET the authorities
Know what they want. Why they are there, might be there forever until they get what
they want. That’s like a Nuclear bomb that’s not even ticking.

PNOY becomes the target of Million People March according to Inquirer. There is a shade of truth on this report because of new evidence that some of his people are associated with PDAF scandal.

PNOY to regain his footing on the scandal must do something!

President Aquino must FIRE EXECUTIVE secretary Jojo Ochoa or latter has to RESIGN!
Ochoa did not have any MORAL INTEGRITY hiring Bryan Yamsuan, the spokesperson of Ronnie Puno, DILG office under GMA. The way he was hired thru the law partner of Ochoa stinks to the highest level of shady deals and corruption.

Without touching Ochoa, PNOY sincerity in cleaning his people is all show!

Handling the Million People March as well as the hangover from pork barrel / PDAF, per se, is going to be a high elevation tight rope walk for PNoy. He may never be able to recover. We know him to be stubborn but certainly not boneheaded, as to fail to heed the cares and concern of his “bosses.” We wish him the lights of his better angels in his decisions as well as the unerring advice from those whom he trusts.

The President’s personal character and upbringing ( honesty and integrity) is beyond question but his hiring decisions and affiliation tolerances could bring him down, badly.
Yamsuan’s presence in Malacanang was a conscious act of Ochoa. Perhaps, he did not clear this with his boss but it certainly smacks of an utter lack of sensitivity on Ochoa’s part. That is bad. Very bad.

The President needs something big, bold, clear and daring. He needs a societal game-changer…..something that no other President has ever done before. His flip-flopping and equivocating tone vis a vis pork barrel is a non-starter. He has the singular opportunity to prove the Constitution’s wisdom of having a non-reelectionist President and as such, to alter permanently the manner by which politics has been conducted in our country. He can steamroller the status quo with people at his back. The ultimate beneficiary will be the people’s political epiphany and maturity. The President has the
opportunity to bring about an impact upon the soul of this nation that approaches the heights of the EDSA People Power that rid this country of the Marcos pestilence. Will he or will he shy away?

The harsh reality is that what would be his legacy as it now stands…..”daang matuwid,” the Corona Impeachment and the extraordinary economic gains….will all be for naught if the opportunity that the pork barrel scandal has handed him is wasted.

maybe, PNoy has good reason to keep ochoa. may kasabihan tayo na keep your friends close, your enemies closer. keeping enemies closer where he can track them is not bad move. enemies dont always stay forever enemies, and can be made to perform. hilary clinton and president barack obama once were on each other’s throat, but after the election when obama won, he gave hilary clinton a job and made her secretary of state. hilary served USA well even though she might have argued with obama in private.

thomas, you forget one thing: PNoy is forgiving. he’s optimistic for all of us, and gives people fresh starts, even enemies. if they betrayed him, that’s their prerogative. I hope they wont betrayed him. sometimes you have to trust people, and be kind to them, even enemies.

nagflip-flop si PNoy, well he’s not the only one to flip-flop. God himself flip-flopped. God had wanted to destroy a city, but flip-flopped when abraham asked him to spare the city for the sake of honest good men, then God flip-flopped again when abraham lowered the number of good men to be found, and God flip-flopped still until abraham bring down the number of good men to the barest minimum. you flip-flop if you’re flexible. the strongest trees in the forest are not the oaks, but the flexible reed.

          Flip flopping is harmless sometimes.
In this case the issue is Pork. PNOY should have stated unconditionally that all forms of pork barrel including the executives must be abolished.

I’m with @moonie here. There is hothing wrong with flip-flopping per se. In this case, it is actually the appropriate response.

I believe this President is doing his darndest best for our country. We should not allow ourselves to be distracted by those from the left and the right and especially the culprits among the senators and congressmen who are making this about the President as a way of pursuing their own agenda and more importantly, to deflect the attention away from themselves and the crimes they have committed.

True, the President will need to clean up his own backyard. And by the looks of it, he is trying to do just that. But let us not lose focus. He has obviously taken note of the people’s sentiments and anger which has prompted his recent announcement abolishing the PDAF. (So what if he did it just before the million march to Luneta which the usual cabal of anti-Aquino mouthpieces have taken as a failed attempt to halt the protest action. Duh! Wouldn’t they have just wanted for him not to have done anything at all just so they can up the ante and further escalate their attacks against him at today’s gathering!)

Aquino has heard and taken action in response to the people’s anger. It may not be enough but it’s a first step. But what of the senators and congressmen involved in the grand scam? Do they look like they have heard the message at all? Enrile is calling for abolishing the President’s own special funds from which he draws to respond to national emergencies, UNA and that rascal Tiangco is questioning DILG’s increased budget instead, Revilla is questioning the validity of his signatures in documents covered by the COA report. I can go on and on but you get the drift.

The VERA files story by Ellen Tordesillas describes Brian Yamsuan….as having been hired by ES Ochoa as his “consultant” ….. because of Yamsuan’s “experience and expertise in communication.” What rot!!! Why in heaven’s name would the Office of the Executive Secretary have a need for a communications consultant ?

First of all…..what then is the Office of the Press Secretary for? They work in the same campus….a spitting distance from one another! Furthermore, PNoy’s communications set-up already started funny, to be kind….an obvious product of political accomodation!!! Not of professional management exigency.

Before PNoy’…..all other Presidencies had only one Press Secretary, who at times also performed as spokesperson. Now, aside from two Spokespersons, they also split the Office of the Press Secretary into two turfs—–H. Coloma and R. Carandang. And the scuttlebutt is that they all do not see eye to eye.

I can only hope that this situation remains simply funny and ridiculous, and nothing more!

THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH GOOD MEN IN THIS COUNTRY

      @Buddy Gomez, Johnny Lin,

My sad realization from all these developments is that there are not enough good men in our country, and it is very hard to build a government that will be honest and credible, since you have so many positions to fill up.

Inevitably, you will end up hiring bad eggs. There are many operators like Yamsuan and Napoles in government, those who survive changes in administration, and peddle their skills and influence for the right price.

Why are we in such a moral mess? And this goes back many years ago- why is corruption so pervasive in a country that is supposed to be dominated by Catholicism? Where the rites and rituals are well-attended?

My theory is that there are certain concepts or doctrines in Roman Catholicism that inadvertently makes us very tolerant of corruption, and leads to its pervasiveness. These are the lack of a direct relationship with God (which leads to reduced personal accountablility) , the use of hierarchies and intermediaries, the concept of purgatory and a bastardized concept of justice, judgment and forgiveness.

If you are interested, hop over to Joe America’s blog, Society of Honor. My essay on ” Does Catholicism Make Us More Tolerant of Corruption” is up.

Thanks for directing me to JoeAm.com…..I did not realize I have so much to catch up on. Anyway, Andrew, your observations and insights are most valid. The coincidences are not only correlated. But there really is much direct causation. The dominance of the Catholic religion over much of Philippine society and over the lives of most Filipinos is arguably the albatross that weighs us down. To your question: Does Catholicism Make Us More Tolerant of Corruption? The answer is most probably yes. Unfortunately, the cure may not all come from advanced secularization. We have to contend with the non-religious aspects of our culture. This could be tough and painful. And that requires some profound inquiries. Maybe you and JoeAm can join hands and minds to provoke serious introspection among all of us. We are not beyond redemption!

My issue with a pure General Appropriations Act (GAA) with no district or congressional allocation is that deliberations for the GAA will be survival of the fittest. Bear in mind that we have proportional representation so Mindanao have less than Luzon. As population and therefore representation is concentrated in urbanized cities and towns, agribase municipalities who really need funds for poverty alleviation will not get assistance or make do with less.

A congressman will naturally fight for his district or align with neighboring districts for public works projects. So we will have more LRT/MRTs subsidized by those in Mindanao and Visayas. Years ago, nakalimutan ang Mindanao for development projects so the MNLF and MILF came into being. NPA breeds in poverty stricken areas. We are a very regionalistic society resulting from different dialects and “kanya-kanya may as well be the norm with a few enlightened congressmen looking at the bigger dimension of lawmaking.
    ========================
Very true what these two paragraphs want to say. The issue is BASIC . offices and men of executive departments MUST DO THEIR JOBS about development in their areas of assignment. Their Head the President must prepare the budget to take care of neglected areas and submit it to Congress whose real job is to make laws and NOT TO DEVELOP THEIR DISTRICTS. THAT IS WHY “A congressman will naturally fight for” his self-interest including his family, relatives, friends and followers (in that order) INSTEAD OF FIGHTING FOR LAWMAKING. That for us is the way the cookie crumbles.

WHY I AM NOT GOING TO TOMORROW’S RALLY

Let me get one thing clear: I am totally for the abolition of the PDAF, and any iteration of it.

However, (to the great consternation of those who think they know me better) I am not going to tomorrow’s rally.

    And this is why:

    THE REAL REASON:

    I’d much rather play basketball.

    THE MADE-UP REASONS:

ONE: Tomorrow’s rally is a headless chicken.

I’ve asked around and there seems to be no driving force behind this rally. At least, no one wants to take full credit (or blame?) for it.

    What does this mean?

On the practical side, people will be attending the rally with no discernible groups. Where will they meet up and gather? What will they do when they get there? What will they do when (heaven forbid) things go bad? And, more basic, what will they do if they have to go to the toilet?

I believe in organized mass action. The mass(es) and the action will be there tomorrow. But where is the organization? I expected those with some experience in activism would know better.

At best, tomorrow’s rally would end up like the Occupy Wall Street Movement, which mobilized thousands for days – in some cases even weeks – on end, but ended up with no concrete gains: no statutory reforms enacted, no officials removed from office, nobody prosecuted or convicted, no heads put up on a stake. Nothing really accomplished at all.

But I understand. Believe me, I understand. I understand the frustration of it all. But frustration is not enough. Witness Mr. Furious (from the movie “Mystery Men”) who, when asked what his superpower was, replied, “I get really, REALLY, angry.”

But where does this anger lead us? After tomorrow, what?

At worst, tomorrow’s rally would be like EDSA 2, where people came to EDSA if only to express their indignation at the President’s lackeys who refused to open the mystical “second envelop”. What happened then? The aimless mobilization was hijacked, and we ended up putting GMA in power. In hindsight, was ten years under GMA’s evil reign better than the four years then remaining under Erap’s hedonistic term?

Ask yourselves these: Who is in the best position to hijack the indignation this time? If that person becomes successful, do you really want to be a pawn – however unwitting – in this game?

I for one have never seen myself as much of a pawn.

TWO: Tomorrow’s rally against PDAF is a proxy fight, and I don’t care much for proxy fights.

The call to abolish the PDAF (and its various previous incarnations) has been around for decades now. But all the Congressmen and Senators received PDAF, but today’s outrage is focused on those who misused and abused PDAF.

So is tomorrow’s rally really against PDAF? Or is it really against the misuse and abuse of the PDAF? Because even if all our prayers are answered, and PDAF is abolished, creative politicians would still find a way to misuse and abuse whatever part of the budget remains under their influence.

There is another name for this “misuse and abuse”, and it is a term that everybody is familiar with – “corruption”.

The real enemy then is not PDAF, it is corruption. So tomorrow’s rally should really be against corruption and not just against PDAF. But why isn’t it being brandied as so?

Because railing against corruption is passé, and railing against PDAF is “in”

I refuse to attend a rally just to be “in”.

In conclusion, if you believe or feel you want to go to tomorrow’s rally, then by all means, GO.

Shout out your frustrations. Let your indignation be heard. Rage against the machine.

But please do not delude yourselves that your civic duties END there. In fact, if anything, your presence at tomorrow’s rally should signify the START of your commitment to a longer and tougher fight.

Some (many?) of us have been fighting this fight for years in silence, without tomorrow’s fire and brimstone, only with the grim and thankless determination to wake up each day and do our work with as much honesty and integrity we can muster, and watch out for, and stand up against, those WITHOUT such honesty and integrity.

However, he denied knowing the NGOs or even one supplier, BB Vergara Plant Nursery. He also said he released the pork barrel funds to the Department of Agriculture with the understanding that it was the DA Region 6 that will implement the projects “and not any organization.”

“No. I don’t know them. Sometime, after the appointment of the COA Chairperson – the new COA Chairperson – these things came to my knowledge. Nagulat ako at that time so I met with the COA chairperson. Sabi ko I released because of Typhoon Frank and other calamities in Iloilo,” he said.

Tupas said he saw the letters that purportedly authorized the release of the funds to the NGOs. He said his signatures in the letters were forged”.

Maniniwala ba kayo sa mga palusot ni Mr. Tupas, Noong impeachment ni Corona, ang galing-galing nya tapos sa “Pork Barrel” naging makakalimutin na sya or nagkaroon sya ng amnesia, ohhh come on Mr. Tupas. We were not just born today and/or yesterday.

The letter is spurious. If one looks closely at the signature, the pen stopped from the downward strokes so there are two noticeable dots on the lower points of those consonants which do not happen if the real signatory would have signed it. Instead, there should be a continuous stroke, hence, no dots should appear. The horizontal line is wavy and not a continuous stroke indicative of a tentative hand. Even forming the concave part of the “J” on the upper left is indicative of a tentative hand.

LEON-AH este Leona you just a added a fleck of sparkling dust
      to my mind:

TRUTH has many offsprings, one is
creativity even in turning anger into humor,
insults into drama; words into rhyme
rhythm into poetry, a style nobody’s
but your own. that’s what you’re doing
      parang Leon-ah. este Leona.

I can’t still get by what I heard in Ted Failon’s interview last week. I heard there was a senator who dined out a lady in the U.S. The senator ordered a Louis Xlll cognac costing $300 per shot and he had three shots. And wala pa first class fare since buisness class is beneath their position. Asked how by his date, he said he gets P30M per month as a senator. This gets to P360M per year!!!!.

Contrast this as shown on TV the other night with the child who was burned and cannot get the proper treatment as they have no money. A pupil holding on to the ropes crossing a raging river just to go to schoo, I remembered..

And I have not heard from the vociferous pro-RH bishops. Ngayon kayo mag-ingay

      Beneficiaries of Napolese Porks
      – Napoles’ lawyer releases affidavits of priests disputing ‘kidnapping’ charge

      – Pope to priests, nuns and bishops: Use “more humble” cars. The following expose shows that ‘retired’ Priest can afford to lease/rent a forbes park house. Maybe the Pope’s admonition doesn’t extend to Priests’ retirees home(s). After all, they’ve got mansions in italy and elsewhere.

MANILA, Philippines – A priest who advocates helping the poor is the listed tenant of Janet Lim-Napoles’ sprawling property in one of the country’s most high-end subdivisions.

According to documents obtained by Rappler, Monsignor Josefino S. Ramirez, now a retired priest of the Archdiocese of Manila, is renting 9 Narra Avenue, South Forbes, Makati City for P280,000 a month.

The two-year contract of lease was signed by Ramirez on March 7, 2013, although it says the lease began Jan 15, 2013 and will end on Jan 15, 2015.

How’s that Monsignor, the ‘PDAF totally gone by 2015 — DBM‘. Your lease contract, by coincidence, ends on Jan 2015. With your benefactor into hiding, either you squat, abscond, rent-free or seek another benefactor to pay for your affluent life style.

      —

O eto, mayruon isang deviant priest, ‘Bishop raps Palace over ‘pork’ flip-flop‘. baka siguro walang abuloy o donasyon mula kay Napolese.

      —

What’s difference (if there’s one) between Napolese and the Bishops? All are conduits, except the former is not a Nun in sheeps clothing. And the former still pays tax (no matter how small) compared with the latter. Go betweens, men in the middle.

        @ Kamison,

Be humble…

          @jorge,

          Hahh haa…
