A tearful Lani Mercado faced veteran entertainment writer Mario Dumaual to defend her husband from charges of grand theft of the people’s money.
With very little makeup, except for some eyeliner, the actress who is also now a lawmaker in Congress said:
“Baka sabihin ng tao ay umaarte ako, umiiyak, kasi laging ganoon ang sinasabi nila kapag artista ka. Pero hindi natin maiiwasan na talagang yon ang nararamdaman ko. Kung kayo man ang mawalan ng asawa at ikukulong siya dahil sa isang kasalanan na hindi naman niya talaga ginawa masakit yon para sa isang maybahay.”
I could not help but notice, though, the large gem winking on her right ear lobe as she moved her head expressively on cam. Were those real diamonds or just swarovskis? Look for yourself below:
If they were real diamonds, what a jarring piece of jewelry to wear on such an occasion.
I was unsure, though, whether to write this, until I saw a piece on Lani Mercado and her apparent love for designer handbags. It’s entitled “Lani’s Luxury bags” by a blogger who calls herself Goldee Luxe.
Goldee Lux recalled the controversial statement Lani Mercado made about pork barrel:
“Ok lang walang pork barrel fund, basta wag lang manghihingi sa amin ang mga tao, e anong ibibigay namin (kung wala ng pork barrel) hindi namn puwede yung pinaghirapan namin dahil sa personal naman namin yun , sa mga anak, sa mga pang araw araw na panggastos…”
Goldee Luxe wrote:
“This made me me wonder what she likes to spend her money on so I did what any normal person would do?I googled her.
Like most women in this day and age, she is definitely into luxury bags. She has been seen carrying Chanel (at a party with Janet Lim Napoles, no less!) and Louis Vuitton bags.”

Based on Senator Bong Revilla’s latest 2014 SALN (Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth), he can afford to give his wife diamonds. He is the fifth richest senator. Both he and his wife jointly declared total assets of P249,352.748.36, liabilities of P166.7 million or a net worth of P82,652,748.36.
However, Senator Bong Revilla was arrested and detained on the charge that he stole P517 million of the pork barrel that was allotted to him so he could help the very poor directly.
Seeing that his declared net worth of P82M is much, much less than the P517 M he is accused of stealing, it is quite understandable that he and his entire family, including his young children, are being subjected by authorities to a lifestyle check.
Why subject minors to a lifestyle check? Isn’t that cruel, inhuman and stupid?
In this case, the minors are not being accused of committing the crime; only their father is. He may have stashed the loot using their names – in various bank accounts and various instruments such as insurance policies, bonds, condominium titles, etc.
You can read more about the charges against Senator Bong Revilla by clicking on this link.
I am posting below, the previous stories I have written about Sen. Bong Revilla, his father and the murder of his half-brother. Another half-brother is still in a regular jail cell awaiting trial while a half-sister remains missing, having fled abroad.

So what if she is wearing diamonds or if she has some expensive bags. Kami nga na less than 1M ang nasa bank merong expensive jewelries and bags. What more Lani Mercado Revilla who was in the showbiz for the longest time. Take note both of them na magasawa nasa show biz. Thats all. Sobrang unfair lang na pati yan pinapansin nyo eh nasa kulungan na nga ung asawa nya.

I am looking at her as a public servant. A congresswoman.
I am looking at her net worth and that of her husband.
I am looking at how much her husband is accused of stealing – which is five times the couple’s net worth.
When she ran for office, her status changed.
And if you think that’s unfair, then you have a warped sense of what public servants should be.
And which is why we have such a warped society.
Jurgen U. says
‘Accused’ he is still on trial meaning this is not yet a fact
but the fact is they have 82M net worth even if you look at her as an actress or as a public servant the fact na she has that much net worth means na she can afford even a 5 carat diamond. What she is wearing in the interview is not even a 1 carat diamond. She maybe a public servant but that does not mean she has to look like a slave. She is representing a certain area of our country to potential investors here and abroad. How will she look credible to the investors if she looks like a beggar? Btw i understand that you are judging her, but just because my views are in disagreement with yours does not give you the right to tell people like me that we have a warped sense of what public servant should be.
raissa says
C’mon. YOu mean if you have no diamond you look like a slave?
Jurgen U. says
C’mon. You mean that’s all you’ll address?
If you were a public servant, you think it would be best to dress yourself ever so simply and expect investors to think, first impression pa lang, that you are someone they can trust?
There was a time when the peso was in equal standing with the US dollar, during the Marcos regime. One reason was because the Marcos family dressed regally, so they were regarded as equals by people in positions of power from all over the world.
Are we not supposed to learn from the past?
raissa says
marcos pa rin. marcos pa rin. hmmm.
regal dress is directly proportional to strong economy?
dont forget, all that regal trapping led to bankruptcy. in the end.
and fyi, Prss. Cory dressed simply when she went before the US Congress and US gave PH millions of dollars.

@Macspeed, sorry, no offense ha. It’s “Hocus Pocus”, as in the magic spell. Funny.
You need to put a little faith in our justice system. Are you saying that if people came up with evidences against you, for a crime you did not commit, hence the word “accused”, you do not deserve to be heard at all?
So why with all the evidences presented, did they find out in the end that GMA deserved to be free after all? Why is Lacson, with all the proof and witnesses who stood against him, was able to run away, and come back, and get elected pa to senator?
Secondly, only you muslims understand the quran.. we don’t read that. So i have no comment for that. Although “woe to the defrauders” would probably mean that we are not enemies completely.
Of course i hope you also know that you are no Allah and therefore is unable to see the actual size of my brain. But if that’s the only way you know how to judge people, then with your own statements you are actually showing everyone how much you are lacking education-wise.
And is therefore not a good source of know-how as to who is an example of a public servant, since you abide by only your description of it. My conversation with you ends here. Comment all you want. But talking to you is definitely not worth it – No intellect, only judgments. There are more productive things i can do with the time i’ll use in just even reading your comments.

In my opinion
Support being given by Lani and family to Bong is natural act of any distraught family.
Their displeasure about big rodents and tiny creatures populating tiny cell of Bong is also acceptable although they fail to realize the monster is primary resident of the cell.
Lani is not accused of any crime. She may have earned her own money rightfully as people are innocent till proven guilty. She should not be judged differently from wannabees, like those people buying expensive bags and jewelries or iPhones when they are lowly salaried employees instead of spending for other important needs like good education and health insurance.
Lani has also the right to dress or accessorize freely like everyone.
What is wrong is the media putting publicity for every sentence or action and photos by Lani. it is unnecessary and not newsworthy except to fodder ridicules.
Family is also at fault giving frequent interviews to media for silence is their best virtue at the moment. Unfortunately, their mantra of “the show must go on” being in the movie industry, does not help their cause.
Finally, Filipinos are to blame because we are incessant gossipmongers!

IT’S AN EYE-OPENER – pareho nga naman silang SENADOR:
***************************************************************************
Featuring now at UMAGANG KAY GANDA! John Silva
This became viral. Tens of thousands of readers. ABS CBN (umagang Kay Ganda) 7 am, wants to know why I wrote this piece. See me. Laugh! I’ll try to look gorgeous at an ungodly hour. Cheers
Dear President Aquino,
This is your boss John talking.
You need to explain to me why you are giving these senators, charged with a 10 billion peso plunder charge, huge comfy jail cells. (second pic)
Your dad Ninoy was a senator too and when he was put in jail for eight years, got a cell about a tenth the size (first pic attached) of what you’re giving these senators.
In one cell, Ninoy had only a chamber pot, not a private bathroom. His bed was smaller with little to nothing inside that cell. There’s a repro of the cell in your family museum in Tarlac.
Your dad didn’t go to jail for stealing. He was into more heady stuff like a return to democracy, human rights and moral convictions. So why the hell are you treating these senators with kid gloves, these guys who can’t seem to recall, account, or sign off on billions of missing pesos?
Did your dad ever stoop so low as to sing a swan song in the Senate like Revilla? “My Way” perhaps like Frank Sinatra?
Did your dad ever whine that he was being singled out like Estrada?
And yet you treat these guys like naughty boys who get ten lashings with a wet noodle. After you break your ass all these months pushing Justice Secretary De Lima et al to make sure there’s finally arrests, despite all the roadblocks thrown their way.
Which makes me and many more taxpayers (your bosses) very alarmed. Napoles surrenders to you and we read later what a humongous crook she seems to really be. Why do you know vermins of this kind and why do they get to appear and soil Malacanang furniture after a massive manhunt surrendering only to you and Mar?
When your dad was jailed in very constricted quarters, he had a revelation. His ego disappeared and material things didn’t matter any longer. His morals and conscience though remained. Tight jails with the accompanying deprivation of freedom, the withdrawal of appurtenances for life’s enjoyment, made Ninoy think. He thought of the seconds, the minutes, the hours, the days and the long long years. He disposed the pettiness and the inutile, became contrite and realized his only reason for living was to regain democracy. There’s something to be said about the rehabilitative features of confinement in an ordinary jail.
These people now charged with plundering our hard earned money are going to get hotel size rooms with their own toilets and probably even hot water. Pray tell how are they going to repent if they have a toilet bowl with a toilet seat instead of a chamber pot? How are they going to get a catharsis if they wake up all bright and fresh and not bothered by other snoring cellmates?
And if the prosecution of these plunderers will be as slow as the Ampatuan massacre case (4 years and counting) why be contrite? They’ll bide their time, take up knitting, read the bible, tweezer their nose hairs, botox their faces, walk a little longer on the treadmill because in less than two years, they’re praying their friends return to power and the jail doors open big and wide and bienvenida parties will be in full swing.
You’ve done good this far getting them charged with plunder. But you better go the whole nine yards.
Like your dad’s, give them cells that make them sweat and agonize and realize their thieving days were a blight on our people. The plunder law, non-bailable and at one point earned the death penalty, is NOT in the category of white-collar crimes. It’s equal to that of first-degree murder. Because when a country and its people are deprived of their hard earned taxes meant for its welfare, and we don’t progress and people are jobless, sick and die, plunder is just like murder in my book. Prosecute them judiciously AND swiftly.
You’d better do some serious and immediate changes to this cushy jail arrangements or else your “ tuwid na daan” slogan (righteous path) will be tarnished. It will be instead just another zig-zag, counterflow, carabao-turd road for us, your employers.
Go check out your father’s jail cell this weekend. Bring a tape measure. Stop indulging the accused we are now thoroughly repulsed with or else you diminish what your father, Senator Ninoy Aquino, stood and was killed for.

Superbly written, dear chit. You’ve said it all and it’s obvious Gen Purisima would have not hurried the construction of the studio-type detention cells for the big-time THIEVES without the consent of the Palace.
The big question is why on earth are the authorities giving them such amenities when they’ve plundered the public coffers of billions of meager taxpayers’ money intended for the poor and for the country’s development – just because they’re SENATONGS? The more they should rot in a 9 square meter cells full of rats, roaches, spiders, mosquitoes, etc just like an ordinary city jail. Their crime is unforgivable for turning their backs to the people that elected them fully trusting that they’ll serve their general welfare – not their personal aggrandizement.

It seems to me that Philippine bank secrecy laws are designed to benefit crooks. Yet I hear nothing about it as an aspect of the pork scandal. Why is there no outcry for allowing the Department of Justice to examine banking records in cases where a warrant is obtained from a judge? Then the softer, less definitive lifestyle checks would not be necessary.
I’m sure there is a certain Metrobank branch that has piles of juicy records that correlate with and validate the whistleblower testimony.
leona says
@Joe…the gov’t or the prosecutors have not thought of that [ I think ] or they maybe just shrugging their shoulders.
You got it right. NOW is the time to check and wade through the BANK ACCOUNTS of the suspects once A WARRANT OF ARREST has been issued. The courts have the power under the Bank Secrecy law even if the bank depositor-arrestee opposes the bank SEARCH.
Good thought @Joe. Many could be overlooking this specially the PROSECUTORS…Ombudsman…WHAT SAY YOU?
Joe America says
If I were Sec. De Lima, I would find out who is the sharpest prosecutor in the ever litigious U.S., and have him chair a committee of five people to determine how the Philippines can get past affidavits and into real CSI. The other four people would be you, Johnny Lin, me and the producer of CSI. Maybe add moonie if moonie is in a really angry mood.
Access to banking records would be point number one on the “to do” list, I think. Number two would be to end NBI clearances, a huge wasteful machine based on the presumption that Filipinos are all probably guilty of something, and get that huge workforce out in the field prowling about with magnifying glasses and a Sherlock Holmes guide to finding evidence.
