By Raïssa Robles
Old age and declining health are reasons the former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile cited for the court to grant him bail.
The request was accompanied by a May 16, 2014 medical certificate from a Dr. Claver Ramos of Makati Medical Center.
Dr. Ramos, an internist specializing in nephrology listed a long list of ailments that the 90-year-old Enrile has:
- diabetes mellitus,
- dyslipiddemia,
- essential hypertension,
- extensive coronary artery calcification in the right coronary,
- left anterior descending and left circumflex,
- multifocal ventricular premature beats,
- episodes of bradycardia,
- colonic diverticulosis,
- thoracic and lumbar spondylosis L4-L5,
- alpha thalassemia,
- macular degeneration,
- chronic lacunar ischemic zones,
- scattered small luminal plaques of proximal middle segments of basilar artery, both horizontal and insular opercular branches of middle cerebral arteries
Meanwhile, Enrile’s doctor is saying Enrile’s health would be greatly at risk if he were to be confined at the police custodial center all by himself. It has a single bed, a bath and shower, a ceiling fan and a small window. But it is much better than the bunkhouses built for the families of the Yolanda typhoon victims.
And how about Golden Acres?
I’d like to invite other doctors to explain what Enrile’s illnesses are in laymen’s terms and how serious these illnesses are.
The evidence out there, however, speaks louder than the doctor’s medical certificate.
UPDATE: June 26, 2014, 7:30 PM
Journalist Melo Acuña, my colleague at FOCAP (Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines), chanced upon Senator Enrile today at Hotel Intercon, and they chatted awhile.
Here is what Melo wrote on Facebook about Enrile:
“While waiting for the EU-MAG-TFD event at InterCon’s Bahia, I opted to have coffee at the Jeepney Coffeeshop and chanced upon Senator Juan Ponce-Enrile. Asked him of his bp, he said it’s 130/70 with a pulse rate of 96. He seemed relaxed.”
Only last November, Enrile delivered a 31-minute privilege speech on the floor of the Senate standing up, without a 24-hour nurse interrupting him to take his bp (blood pressure).
Besides, Enrile himself was strong enough for the grueling jobs of presiding over an impeachment court while personally writing his own memoirs – at least if you believe his own words.
On page 714 of his book, he said:
“Writing my memoirs proved to be an emotional roller-coaster ride for me.”
And on the next page, he also wrote:
“I am now on my last term in the Senate and it ends in 2016. By then, I would be 92. I just pray that I will stay in good health and in good humor.”
What does this mean?
This means, Enrile himself believed at the time of his writing his memoirs that he was in good health. It would be interesting to ask Dr. Ramos how long Enrile has had those illnesses he enumerated.
Was it before 2012 when Enrile published his memoirs?
Finally, you can see how vigorous and healthy Enrile is by watching this video of his privilege speech delivered only last November:

yes, faked, and maybe not updated. I mean the list. it’s most likely old. considering that makati medical center is top private hospital, its doctors on top and knowledgeable of current medical trends and breakthroughs, it’s surprising that dr ramos still use old term. diabetes mellitus and diabetis insipidus have changed names and are now known as diabetes type 1 and diabetes type 2. been so for nearly 10yrs.
it’s possible old list was given and circulated to keep us off the track. misled us, make us believe enrile is sick old man and ought to be pitied. be given utmost of care and consideration.
enrile has undergone a number of stem cell treatments and swore by their effecacy, of how effective cell treatments truly are. see drill down’s comment below at 20. so, if cell treatment is that effective, then his diabetis is probably cured, gone. maybe same with his spondylosis. unless a most recent and updated version is given, the ailments arranged in chronological order from most recent to not so recent and dated, I tend not to take the list seriously.

At first glance, and given the details of Raissa’s article, JPE looks healthy for his age. He may, therefore, be healthy enough to reside temporarily at the PNP Custodial Center. His request to be confined somewhere else for medical reasons is now a political matter for the government to consider. If we stick to the law, he should be at the custodial center.
The collective hope of the majority, I surmise, is that the lives long enough to see his plunder and other related cases resolved in the government’s favor.
If we look at his so-called legal team, Mendoza, et al, we know that the government is in for a really long trial. His lawyers are known for dilatory tactics as in the Lucio Tan cases.
I sure hope the time of reckoning has come for JPE and that those of the Marcoses will follow. Like soon.
Nice story indeed, Raissa. Give us more.

‘His request xxx is now a political matter’ …
The law imposed by the legislature, on ‘Oath’ of Office of judges is like in these words:
“I do solemnly swear that I will administer justice without respect to persons, and do equal right to the poor and to the rich; and that I will faithfully and impartially discharge all the duties incumbent on me as xxx, according to the best of my abilities and understanding, agreeably to the constitution and laws xxx”
To do equal right to the poor and to the rich – equal. it says. What is to the poor is to the rich and to the rich is to the poor.
How immoral to impose it on judges, if judge were to be used as the instruments, and knowing instruments, for violating what judges swear to support!
Why otherwise does it direct the judges to take an oath to support it; this oath certainly applies in an especial manner, to their conduct in their official character.
[the thought/idea is from CJ Marshall, Marbury v. Madison case]
The Preamble of our constitution marks the ‘rule of law,’ and ‘equal and justice.’
Let our judges be free to follow their oath, to their conduct in their official character in the performance of their duties.

Bongbong Marcos running for president? Wake-up Pinas!!!
Kalahari says
Miriam has recently indicated her intention to run in 2016 presidential derby under the LP banner, mar being conceded as non-factor.
Marcos vs Miriam is definitely going in favor of the name-sake of the infamous dictator with a campaign kitty of P10B, or more, at his disposal.presumably representing interest income only.
The famous battle of the bulge may be re-enacted with the armies of vp binay, bongbong, mar, & possibly erap pouncing on one another like hell – with binay the likely winner.
The people cannot clamor for another team under PNoy because PNoy & binay are too close with each other for comfort.
If serge osmena will team up with either grace or vilma under the LP-NP-PEOPLE alliance, the gloomy picture may yet turn up rosy
Kalahari says
The successor of PNoy, whether a sinner or saint, will be beholden to him to avoid being relentlessly persecuted like what he did to gma & corona.
Erap sensed this when he said he’ll run for president if binay becomes the LP standard bearer.
Recent surveys for presidentiables shows binay got the highest score way way ahead of the 2nd placer. It won’t be surprising if mar becomes the LP standard bearer with escudero and PNoy’s allies secretly campaigning for binay.
Something must be done by well-meaning Filipinos to ensure the continuity of “daang matuwid”

Dehado masyado si Sen. Meriam…pustahan Lo Tres!
Subalit sa 2016 KARAMBOLA ang labanan 5 or more candidates, pareho ang pusta.
When will there be ONE-on-ONE? The pustahan will be SAMPU-ANIM.
Serge Os malamang mahina. Grace Poe maybe a heavy-weight. Vilma middle-heavy-weight.
Binay and Erap heavy-weights mga ito. Mar Roxas must go to super heavy-weight to beat the former twos.
Rudy Duterte is a killer-weight…sana.
Months before May 2016 there will be multiple coalitions of political parties, balimbing doon, balimbing dito, and balimbing ng kakahoyan.
only the BOBOTANTES’ votes will be the deciding factor unless something miraculous happens to them.
Kalahari says
Who will be PNoy’s anointed one? Will the guy suffer the fate of Gibo in 2010?
Kalahari says
The great majority of voters now will not support any candidate tainted with pork scam – the biggest scandal in PHL political history that will haunt the LP hierarchy for protecting its allies.
The PDAF (P10B) is just a shade of a much larger dole-outs – the DAP (P150B?), but the COA and other investigating agencies are presumably forbidden to probe or make inquiry thereto.
No wonder the SC is taking it easy to rule on its constitutionality.

But two party members, Senators Alan Peter Cayetano and Antonio Trillanes IV, have expressed their readiness to run for president and vice president, respectively.”
Manny Villar has lotsa of money! He just might go for it again. It will be a very merry-go-round indeed on May 2016.

Kalahari says
Villar will be a welcome addition that the voters in 2016 could choose from.
Aside from his vast resources, which he could proudly claim to have come from his sweat and blood – unlike binay and bongbong, he can also pledge to continue the “daang matuwid” and no porks in his administration.
He can persuade either vilma or grace to ensure full-packed audience
AngLagay says
Vilma… artista na naman! Wala na bang ibang qualified? Puro artista na lang ba talaga ang taste ng mga Pinoy?
Kalahari says
@ AngLagay, vilma at present is the only winnable opponent of vp binay who can give him a run for his money.
Vilma’s popularity as an actress and 16 years in the local governance (3 consecutive terms as mayor of Lipa City and presently on her 3rd term as governor of Batangas) give her the necessary experience to govern the country efficiently and well and a proven vote-getter among the masa and intellectuals as well.
She has never been tainted with corruption and vp binay is eyeing her as his vp candidate in 2016.
The main issue in 2016 is corruption and binay has plenty of questions to answer.

Read this transcript of his interview on February 14, 2014, and decide for yourself how deathly ill he is, or not:
.
Q: So, lagi kayong pumupunta doon?
From 60 to 70, kung minsan daw nakakalimutan na isara yung zipper niya. Kapag lapas na, naiihian na yung pantalon.
Q: Sir, wala pa kayo doon?

The MAIN thing about proving guilty or not, is the possibility of getting the PORK MONEY back where it belongs. Jailing is required of course however if there is an AGE LIMIT for PUNISHMENT, the government should provide an ALTERNATE HUMANE PUNISHMENT such as PAYING INTEREST FOR THE ROBBED MONEY….

johnny, as regards your comment at 17, and at 17.1.1, it’s possible that enrile has inherited alpha thalassemina. and dr ramos ought to specify whether it was the sickle cell type. the one passed on from parent to child. jack enrile could have alpha thalassemia trait too, if he is truly the biological son of juan ponce enrile. if not, well, I dont blame cristina for duping enrile, foisting an illegitimate one on him, ha, ha.
seriously, I think, dr ramos made the report when he was still intern, an internist. a doctor at entry level, new on the job and dont know which direction to go. under the guidance of a mentor, a senior doctor with vast medical experience. some interns keep old records as throphy, a reminder of the time when they 1st entered the medical profession.
moonie says
2nd line above at 18.2 starting with possible should read: . . . ” has inherited alpha thalassemia,” . . .
Johnny Lin says
@moonie
Sorry, sickle cell is entirely different inherited disorder from alpha thalassemia. Former is almost unheard trait among Filipinos unless they have a black parent while latter is commonly found among Mediterraneans, north Africans and Asians.
Maybe your ipad or android got confused with “subtype” of Thalassemia.
Johnny Lin, MD says
All the diagnoses listed could be related or expected complications of one illness, that is diabetis mellitus which is listed as number one in the list. The rest in the list are inconsequential If it’s type 2 diabetis, adult onset and blood sugar is well controlled by his oral medications; then Enrile is in good health at his age.
He plundered when he was in his eighties probably suffering from diabetis already, so he has to suffer the consequences of being punished for the crime he committed at a very old age.
Enrile must reveal his medical records for scrutiny by independent physicians to prove that he only contacted diabetis recently. If he had diabetis before he plundered, he should not claim illness for merciful treatment. Those clamoring, including PNoy, to be easy on him are wrong. They send the wrong message to elderly criminals.
Claver Ramos is a contemporary of Enrique Ona, the DOH secretary. Former used to send patients to the latter for renal surgery while in private practice. Ona must recluse himself from deciding or participating in the decision on the health condition of Enrile because it is unethical and inappropriate to make judgment on the medical certificate of a close associate/referring physician.
raissa says
are you really an M.D.?
Johnny Lin says
Always said I’m an analyst with specialization. #18, “plundered” title.
I can say though with accuracy that Claver’s wrote diagnosis #10 without specific knowledge of what subtype of Thalassemia Enrile is suffering from. It was his waste basket diagnosis he copied from the notes of another physician, probably a hematologist who was consulted because Enrile had anemia or an infectious disease specialist because Enrile had malaria.
Great Chance Enrile has Alpha Thalassemia for the past 90 years, meaning most probably inherited, so putting it as one of the diagnoses to cause his serious deterioration while incarcerated is unnecessary “intentional medical padding of sickness”. This in itself is unethical. That alone speaks of the credibility and competency of Claver Ramos, a nephrologist, providing Enrile a certified medical certificate without any listed renal disease of the patient.
If he were a competent Internist he would have specified the subtype of Alpha Thalassemia Enrile is suffering from.
