MESSAGES TO THE CBCP
In spite of all that have been written about Pope Francis’ visit to the Philippines there are many important messages and symbolisms his visit conveyed that many people missed to catch and understand.
One is that both Pope Francis and President Aquino are in unity in their fight against corruption. In essence, what the President and the Pope are saying to each other, during their respective welcome address, is that they are both aware of the corruption issues in their own turfs, and that there should be concerted efforts among world leaders to fight and overcome corruption everywhere.
And to fight corruption, instances of corruption should be brought front and center, and not swept under the rug. (Those who are asserting that the President is out of line for criticizing the Catholic Church hierarchy in front of the Pope are among those who missed to catch and understand the messages.)
Another is when Pope Francis, on his arrival, sought out Cardinal Tagle. Among the Catholic hierarchy officials who were lined up to greet the Pope at the airport, it was only Cardinal Tagle whom the Pope embraced and engaged in warm and lingering conversation – something the Pope did not do with the President of CBCP, or with the most senior among the Cardinals. The message is very clear (in my own words): “Here is Cardinal Tagle whom I am very fond of, and who represents my vision for the Catholic Church in the Philippines. Listen to him, and follow him, for he has my full trust and confidence.”
That message should be an embarrassment to the CBCP.
Another “slap to the face” to the CBCP is the recent appointments of Pope Francis of 15 new cardinals, none of whom come from the Philippines in spite of our being the biggest Catholic nation in Asia. Under normal circumstances, one would expect the Pope to appoint 14 new cardinals only, and on his visit to the Philippines announce a new Filipino cardinal to complete the 15, as a gesture of goodwill on his historic visit to our nation. But that did not happen. The message is also very clear (again, in my own words): “Live up to your vows of poverty, repent and seek forgiveness for your sins, clean up the corruption in your midst, prove to God that you are worthy of being among His disciples.”
If the CBCP listens, then maybe one of the next cardinals would be a Filipino.
chit navarro says
I posted this elsewhere but I think it maybe a good rejoinder to the CBCP treatment:
“And finally, there is the challenge for the poor, to love the poor, with your bishops. Do you think of the poor? Do you feel with the poor? Do you do something for the poor? Do you ask the poor to give you the wisdom they have?”
The above quote comes from Pope Francis, his final message, in his encounter with the Youth at UST. I am sure the BISHOPS & THE CLERGY / PRIESTS are overlooking their being mentioned here. But I am sure the Holy Father really threw this challenge to the BISHOPS:
BISHOPS – DO YOU LOVE THE POOR?
– DO YOU FEEL WITH THE POOR?
– DO YOU DO SOMETHING FOR THE POOR?
– DO YOU ASK THE POOR TO GIVE YOU THE WISDOM THEY HAVE?
Unfortunately for some or more of these bishops, they do not know how it is to be poor. They do not give to the poor – instead, they take from the poor the small amount they have and call it “tithes”…just like politicians.
Now, who is the greater thief as President Aquino posed the question in his opening speech in Malacanang?
moonie says
must be painful for the bishops and priests to bear. the pope did not praise them, mention them by name and thank them wholeheartedly and profusely. president aquino’s speech must have dug deep, made the pope aware that many of the clergy are wolves in sheep’s clothing. there are millions of catholic in the phil yet not many attend masses. attendance is dwindling.
leona says
Majority of priests and up the ladder came from the poor. Yes, they were poor but became priest, monsignor, bishops and so on up up and away up!
Very rare they came from wealthy families. My poor dad said ‘In Rome, walk around, you see so many priests, more bishops, more nuns et.al.’ Like Vatican has no labor unemployment problem.
Who supports all them? One is we in the Philippines.
yvonne says
I’ll be really worried if there are less priests, less bishops, and less nuns to be seen at the Vatican. It would be like asking why are there more Koreans than Filipinos in the Philippines. :-)
baycas says
The subliminal message was that PNoy et al knew all along that Cardinal Tagle, who is close to the Pope and whom PNoy included as one of the kindred spirits, already briefed Vatican last year about corrupt fund diversions (by both civil and Catholic Church authorities) that most likely deprived the poor.
“Reject corruption,” so says Pope Francis to–emphatically—everyone.

Know a bit the probable reason the present Pope wanted the name of FRANCIS [ of Assisi]
” Synopsis
Born in Italy circa 1181, St. Francis of Assisi was renown for drinking and partying in his youth. After fighting in a battle between Assisi and Perugia, Francis was captured and imprisoned at ransom. He spent nearly a year in prison—awaiting his father’s ransom—and, during this time, reportedly began receiving visions from God. After his release from prison, Francis reportedly heard the voice of Christ, who told him to repair the Christian church and live a life of poverty. So he abandoned his life of luxury and devoted his life to Christianity and became known all over the Christian world. Later in life, Francis reportedly received a vision that left him with the stigmata of Christ—marks resembling the wounds Jesus Christ suffered when he was crucified—making Francis the first person to receive the holy wounds of the stigmata. He was canonized as a saint on July 16, 1228. Today, St. Francis of Assisi has had a lasting resonance, with millions of followers across the globe.
Early Life of Luxury
Born circa 1181 in Assisi, duchy of Spoleto, Italy, St. Francis of Assisi, though revered today, began his life as a confirmed sinner. His father was a wealthy cloth merchant who owned farmland around Assisi, and his mother was a stunning Frenchwoman. Francis wanted for nothing during his youth; he was spoiled, indulging himself with fine food, booze and women, and left school at the age of 14. By this time, he had become renown as a teenage tearaway who frequently drank, partied and broke the city curfew. He was also known for his charm and for being dandy in his dress.
In these rustic surroundings, Francis of Assisi learned the skills of archery, wrestling and horsemanship. He was expected to follow his father into the family textile business, but was bored by the prospect of life in the cloth trade. Instead of planning a future as a merchant, he began daydreaming of a future as a knight; knights were Medieval action heroes, and if Francis had any ambition, it was to be a war hero like them. It wouldn’t be long before the opportunity for warfare beckoned.
In 1202, war broke between Assisi and Perugia, and Francis eagerly took his place with the cavalry. Little did he know at the time, his experience with war wold change him forever.
War and Imprisonment
Francis and the men of Assisi came under heavy attack, and in the face of superior numbers, they took flight. The whole battlefield was soon covered with the bodies of butchered, mutilated men, screaming in agony. Most of the surviving Assisi troops were immediately put to death.
Dressed like an aristocrat in expensive new armor, Francis was quickly captured by enemy soldiers but, judging him worthy of a decent ransom, decided to spare his life. He and the other wealthy prisoners were taken as prisoners, led off to a dank underground cell. Francis would spend nearly a year in this miserable prison cell—awaiting his father’s ransom—during which time he may well have contracted a serious disease. Also during this time, he would later report, he began to receive visions from God.
After the War
Finally, after a year of negotiations, Francis’s ransom was accepted and he was released from prison in 1203. When he came back to Assisi, however, Francis was a very different man. Upon his return, he was dangerously sick in both mind and body—a shell-shocked casualty of war. He had fought and lost in a bitter, bloody war, and was left with mental and physical scars.
One day, as he would later report, whilst riding on a horse in the local countryside, Francis encountered a leper—regarded, at the time, as the lowest of the low, an untouchable. Previously, Francis would have run from the leper, but on this occasion, his behavior was very different. Viewing the leper as a symbol of moral conscience—or as Jesus incognito, according to some religious scholars—he embraced and kissed him, later describing the experience as a feeling of sweetness in his mouth. After this incident, Francis felt released from many of his inhibitions. Suddenly, his earlier life of wine, women and song had lost all of its appeal.
Subsequently, Francis, now in his early 20s, began turning his focus toward God. Instead of working, he spent an ever-increasing amount of time at a remote mountain hideaway as well as in old, quiet churches around Assisi, praying and looking for answers. During this time, while praying before an old Byzantine crucifix at the church of San Damiano, Francis reportedly heard the voice of Christ, who told him to rebuild the Christian church and to live a life of extreme poverty. Thusly, Francis abandoned his life of luxury and devoted his life to Christianity. He began preaching around Assisi and was soon joined by 12 loyal followers.
Some regarded Francis as a madman or a fool, but others viewed him as one of the greatest example of how to live the Christian ideal since Jesus Christ himself. Whether he was really touched by God, or simply a man misinterpreting hallucinations brought on by mental illness and/or poor health—following his release from prison, he was incredibly sleep-deprived and malnourished—one thing is for certain: Francis of Assisi quickly became well-known throughout the Christian world.
Devotion to Christianity
After his epiphany at the church of San Damiano, Francis experienced a defining moment in his life. In order to raise money to rebuild the Christian church, he stole a bolt of cloth and a horse from his father. His father became furious upon learning of his son’s crimes, and subsequently dragged Francis before the local bishop. The bishop told Francis to return his father’s money, to which his reaction was extraordinary: He stripped off his clothes and passed them, along with the money, back to his father, declaring that God was now the only father he recognized; this event is credited as Francis’s final conversion, and there is no indication that Francis and his father ever spoke again thereafter.
The bishop gave Francis a rough tunic, and dressed in these new humble clothes, Francis left Assisi. Unluckily for him, the first people he met on the road were a group of dangerous thieves, who beat him badly. Despite his wounds, Francis was elated. From now on, he would live according to the Bible.
Francis’s adopting Christ-like poverty was a radical notion at the time. The Christian church was tremendously rich, much like the people heading it, which concerned Francis and many others, who felt that the church’s long-held apostolic ideals had eroded. Thusly, Francis set out on a mission to restore Jesus Christ’s own, original values to the now-decadent church. With his incredible charisma, thousands of followers were soon drawn to him, listening to his sermons and joining in his way of life; his followers became known as Franciscan friars.
Continuously pushing himself in the quest for spiritual perfection, Francis was soon preaching in up to five villages per day, teaching a new kind of emotional and personal Christian religion that everyday people could understand. He even went so far as to preach to animals, which garnered criticism and earned him the nickname “God’s fool.” But Francis’s message was spread far and wide, and thousands of people were captivated by what they heard.
In 1224, Francis reportedly received a vision that left him with the stigmata of Christ—marks resembling the wounds Jesus Christ suffered when he was crucified, through his hands and the gaping lance wound in his side—making Francis the first person to receive the holy wounds of the stigmata. (Francis’s wounds remained visible for the rest of his life; some believe that his wounds were actually symptoms of leprosy, not proof of a miracle.)
Death and Legacy
As Francis approached his death, many predicted that he was a saint in the making. When his health began to decline more rapidly, Francis went home. Knights were sent from Assisi to guard him, and to make sure that no one from neighboring towns would carry him off (the body of a saint was viewed, at the time, as an extremely valuable relic that would bring, among many things, glory to the town where it rested).
Francis of Assisi died on October 3, 1226, at the age of 44, in Assisi, Italy. Today, Francis has a lasting resonance, with millions of followers across the globe. He was canonized as a saint just two years after his death, on July 16, 1228, by his former protector, Pope Gregory IX. Today, St. Francis of Assisi is the patron saint for ecologists—a title honoring his boundless love for animals and nature.’
“Francis’s adopting Christ-like poverty was a radical notion at the time. The Christian church was tremendously rich, much like the people heading it, which concerned Francis and many others, who felt that the church’s long-held apostolic ideals had eroded.”
Tremendously rich is the Church. Much like the people heading it. He felt the Church’s long-held apostolic ideals had eroded.
Corruption. No wonder Pope Francis loves the name FRANCIS.

REALITY IS SUPERIOR TO IDEAS
Pope Francis is indeed a Pope of many quotable gems. The title above is one such quote, something the Pope made impromptu in his UST address. The wonder of it is that the Pope walks the talk.
The quote may be viewed in different ways, and I believe that one can spend a whole evening with friends interpreting the meaning of the concept — and not come out with a consensus at the end of the evening.
ONE VIEW. A leader with his own IDEAS, probably stubborn in some of his ideas, will not be a leader who leads and inspires if he does not mix that with a good measure of REALITY. Only he, of course, can make the right balance or mix. When the reality is in great conflict with the idea, that is when REALITY should be made SUPERIOR to the IDEA — in the actions the leader must take.
WALKING THE TALK
Pope Francis, while recognizing and mostly adhering to the dogma and ritual of the church (THE IDEA), realizes the ills of the church and the growing disenchantment of the faithful to the church (THE REALITY). To invigorate the church, he decides to prioritize this reality on a two-pronged approach: attack frontally the non-dogmatic areas and rituals of the church by severely criticizing his curia, among others; and EXTENDING OR GOING TO THE FRINGES — while not disregarding the main tenets — of the dogma. In effect, being true to the concept of REALITY IS SUPERIOR TO IDEA. We see this in the actions he has taken from the time of his Papacy.
ONLY TALKING THE TALK
In contrast, we see the behavior of the CBCP during the time of GMA. The Filipino catholics were disillusioned with the church and the corruption of GMA (THE REALITY). While adhering to the dogma and rituals of the church (THE IDEA), it did not do anything to confront that reality in order to further the traditional church objective of strengthening the devotion of the faithful. Instead it surrenders to the enticement (corruption) of GMA. It prioritized REALITY by SURRENDERING to it.
Just one view on the quote from Pope Francis.
Joe America says
Nicely presented view. Body language was so interesting during this trip, the Pope’s reaction to different people in different circumstances. I get the distinct impression that he knows when people are playing their little deceitful games, and he does not like it one bit. But he plays through the act, to maintain the dignity of his position. He was warm to Cardinal Tagle, but not so warm to other Philippine bishops. I think he was probably briefed in detail by Cardinal Tagle as to who’s who, and I’d guess he wholly understands the political shenanigans of the CBCP.
leona says
A good view my friend!
What was taken up when the Pope met with the Church leaders here? Secret. Confidential. Yes. Do we need to get something of it? Maybe or maybe not.
The Church need to do some invigorating ‘for us’ so we continue to love God, His Church and our Church leaders. 5 days visit must have been part of Pope Francis idea to make a reality of the whole thing. To fail and not succeed will be very bad. Many Catholic members, especially the adults are not ‘in love anymore’ with the Church and it’s leaders. How about when the youth will be doing the same?
The Church here with a CBCP high ranking members of leaders of the Church. It was like a ‘Conspiracy of Bishops Contra Philippines’ in the previous administration. CBCP !
PNoy’s speech confirmed this conspiracy. The Pope heard it. I remember the face expression of the Pope listening to PNoy’s speech. He didn’t blink. No squirming. He was calm and cool hearing the speech of our President. Not one can say the speech was not an official report of what the conspirators did as CBCP.
For me, it’s like KGB. Or CCCP. Sounds almost the same. Idem sonam.
Let’s hope our Church leaders, now that Pope Francis already left, will have a good cooperation with OUR government leaders for the progess, peace and harmony in this country. And not as some attackers to our civilian leaders.
Lower everyones’ EGO, all leaders, be civilian or spiritual, for the sake of this country and the people.
From there, we can get Mercy and Compassion as Pope Francis’ message..

Pope stumped: Why does God allow children to suffer?
The Philippine Star) | Updated January 19, 2015 – 12:00am
“Why does God allow these things to happen to us? The children are not guilty of anything,” she said, breaking down.As Palomar wept profusely, the 78-year-old pontiff took her into his arms and hugged her for a few seconds. Palomar later said she cried after being overcome by jitters, not because she had been sexually abused.
The pope discarded most of his prepared speech that he was due to give in English, reverting to his native Spanish to deliver an impromptu and heartfelt response.
“She is the only one who has put a question for which there is no answer and she wasn’t even able to express it in words but in tears,” the pope told a crowd . “The nucleus of your question… almost doesn’t have a reply,” Pope Francis said.
The pope said…….. “he could not answer”……….. the questions posed by Palomar and Chura

An item on Einstein. Although a physicist par excellence, my readings tell me that he was a believer in some universal unifying thing or force — not a God as viewed by organized religions. His physicist viewpoint probably led him to that observation. He was a philosopher of some sort. He it was who said, among others — “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” I am a believer in that.

Thank you for stopping by. My sharp reaction to JBL is because I work diligently (yes it is work) to establish a framework for discussion that is honest and respectful. It is the way new knowledge is created and angry division avoided. The people contributing themselves work hard to do that. It is easy to take shots. It is hard to express conflicts delicately. Some of the hardest work has been done by a confirmed atheist (Edgar Lores) and a deeply faithful Catholic (sonny). Both are brilliant and good men, extraordinarily well read, and to watch them work through the issues . . . which they do now and then . . . is like watching a beautiful symphony orchestra perform. Percussion and violins alternately striking in clash, or humming in unison. Their hard work ought not be belittled, I think, nor should they be incited to arms.

An emotional type of query to the Pope for an answer . . . like Pontius Pilate cleverly asking Jesus “Are you the son of God?’
In another scene [ in the NT] Jesus says: My God My God, why have you forsaken me!
Are there similarities of the two questions? Both appears emotional types. Can any answers be made? Jesus did not get one. The girl did not get it from the Pope.
So,what does that signify? Don’t ask such emotional question of that type. But one can insist to do so. . .
So, God says: Why did you sin? [ the li’l girl may not have but she was I believed ‘coached’ by an adult – who?] ‘O, what is the answer of the adult?
‘Aha, I withdraw my question’ . . . I’m going get caught here. ha ha ha

So far I have browsed most of the mainstream philippine dailies and websites and not one mention of what I am talking about.
Well, it only proves that societies in their fragile infancy, indoctrination coming from outsiders and deficiency in the education system such as the philippines are susceptible to various interpretations on what corporeal existence is all about. I think those intellectuals in JoeAM site are in denial.

@baycas, you’re right, with all rightiousness. That is why the PARENTS are the sole responsible in the upbringing of a child. That is why JESUS came to earth from beinf NINO so that VIRGIN MARY AND ST JOSEPH will rear him according to the teachings of GOD. From then on the duties and responsibilities of child jesus is in the hands of his mother, the VIRGIN MARY AND HIS FOSTER FATHER, ST JOSEPH, WITH THE GUIDANCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.
We parents MUST be the very first EXAMPLE to our children. We must always tell the TRUTH no matter what. Truth hurts but in this pain of truth we inculcate in our childrens minds and conciousness what is right and what is truth.
If we parents lives in lies FOR SURE our children will also live in lies. Just like food, what you eat that will be the nourishment of your body, so as lies.
That is why we parents MUST LOVE, PROTECT OUR CHILDREN. Teach them to bear all pains that truth will bring. If we parents cannot bear responsible and GOD FEARING CHILDREN, we MUST NOT BEAR CHILDREN.
Pinay710 says
I’m sorry, i must address you @SIR BAYCAS, sorry i was carried by emitions if children are the topics.

“Teach them to bear all pains the truth will bring.” That surely is the challenge because as parents we are duty bound to protect our children.
moonie says
guide and discipline and protect children, but let them face challenges, not emasculate them, not cover up their lies just so the family names can appear clean. as they grow older and wiser, let children face the consequences of their actions. they cannot be children forever, always depending on parents to fight battles for them, to clear the path for them, to do what must be done for them. when parents die suddenly, children as adults are often lost, so used to having parents doing all the hard work, all the running around, all the thinking.
problems with parents are sobrang pangungunsente. tried to be friend of thier kids, look the other way when kids do drugs, drink and pillage. parents dont look the other way, they instill discipline and correct erring kids even if doing so makes them unpopular and less loved. kids will soon realized what true parenting means and will learn to respect parents as people, properties included.
it’s parents job to prepare children for independence so when parents are no longer around, children can stand on their own, hopefully doing all the rights things.
Pinay71043 says
mams/[email protected]@Pickers1368, right tama po. That’s why while they are young we have to have all our eyes on them in every step they make. We parents cannot choose their friends BUT when they are at home WE ARE their friends and we can tell them what are REAL friends are.
And when the time comes they have their own family, we have to loosen them A BIT bit not all the way.(maybe not all who can read mine will not agree woth me, but that is life is) like us when we start our lives we also got LLLLOOOOTTTTSSSSS of trials, they too will have, and when that time comes STILL we parents ALWAYS step in to the rescue. THAT IS PARENTING IS, HANGGANG ANG ATING MGA PAA AY MAGPANTAY.
If all parents can do this, maybe we can minimize CHILDREN OUT THE STREET, And we can face our creator, SIR GOD, WE DID NOT LEFT LIABILITIES TO THE WORLD.
filipino_mom says
If we parents cannot bear responsible and GOD FEARING CHILDREN, we MUST NOT BEAR CHILDREN.
are you telling me i must not have had my children? we are unbelievers, but i am raising my children to be good people, responsible, generous, kind, so many things that even children, those who are raised to be “god-fearing” are not. and i can tell you, even at a young age, my children are good without god.
please do not make such sweeping statements. marami kaming mga unbelievers who are parents, too.
Pinay710 says
[email protected]_mom, i don’t mean to hurt you. AND I DON’T BELIEVE YOU ARE UNBELIEVER. you are A BELIVER ONLY DIFFERENT FROM THE BELIEVES OF LIKE ME , A CATHOLIC. YOU are a believer because you know in your heart you are CREATED by someone, and that is GOD. You don’t believe that you came from nowhere? I know deep inside a certain part of your heart you BELIEVE GOD IS WITH YOU.
I’m sooo sorry if i hurt you. I have’nt met an unbeliever and i don’t know how deep is the definition of UNBELIEVER. I know an ATHEIST.
BUTit doesn’t matter wether unbeliever or atheist or whatever as long as you don’t hurt somebody that most matter in the eyes of GOD and the society.
Again I’ soooo soorrry!
filipino_mom says
nope. i believe in science, that’s all. i do not buy the idea of an invisible means of support, not the afterlife. atheists are unbelievers. my family is a family of atheists. i accept your apology, but please, do not tell me what i have in my heart. i do not have your god or any other person’s god. i do respect your beliefs. i grew up with them until i knew better.
filipino_mom says
@pinay, naputol yung isinulat ko. i also want to make an apology for taking it out on you. i have had a looooong history of bs from so-called religious people who made me feel less than what i actually am. and as a mother, to read what you have written, certainly set off my protective mommy mode. nobody deserves to be told things like that. i have been told worse, actually. after having been admitted twice for miscarriages, a catholic nurse wrote “habitual abortionist” on my records. did i deserve that? no. nobody even asked ME. until now, more than a decade and two kids later, i still mourn my two babies. so you see, sometimes we do need to think before we click because we don’t know who’s on the other end.
again, sorry.
Pinay710 says
@filipino_mom, that catholic nurse do not have the right to write those ” two words”. NO MOTHER EVER EVER WANT TO LOSE A CHILD. my heart is breaking while reading your piece.
Ok let’s not talk this topic. I dont want to add more pain on you thinking of your past. BELIEVER OR NON BELIEVER WE ARE BOTH HUMAN BEING, GOT HEART GOT FEELINGS BUT DIFFERENT POINT OF VIEW. but we have one in common BOTH OF US LOVE OUR COUNTRY. PEACE BE WITH YOU.

@Pinay710
Sorry, but I have to call you on this and tell you that are these great-sounding words, but really not applicable to our lives.
Yes, parents have a responsibility to nurture, care and protect their children, even ensuring that they teach the good values for them to live better lives of their own.
However, it is not our responsibility if they choose otherwise. I am not condoning their evil works, but it’s up to them if they want to uphold the family name or not. We teach, we guide, but since they became adults, it’s their prerogative if they follow us or not.
What we need to do is to be caring for them, love them, admonish them when they are doing something wrong so they will have a template of what is right and wrong.
No one can tell us not to have children if our children, in their adult life do something wrong or despicable, despite all the admonition and values we instilled into them while they were young.
God cannot be faulted if Adam ate the forbidden fruit. He is God’s son after all who was really loved, nurtured, taught and warned by God not to eat the forbidden fruit. Is God at fault if Adam ate it? No. So are we, parents, if our grown-up children do those bad things.
What we need to do is to teach them physics, for every action, there is a corresponding reaction or for every bad deed, there is a consequence, and pray that they adhere to this admonition.
Note: I just had to answer because I find this section too harsh of a statement.

Johnny Lin says
That is why Mel Sta Maria is not the president because he does not have the courage to make controversial decisions.
Aquino displayed his care for the people benefitting the nation by saying that corruption is evil and priests should not be hiding their sentiments against corruption because it affects the poor.
His opinion represents typical wheeler dealing lawyers sticking to schemes of resolving problems “under the table deals” or “behind the backs scenarios on agreements” rather than public exposure of every cases so no one will suspect that losing clients were sold to the opposition.
That said, his personal does not mean Aquino was wrong. It’s just Sta Maria thought like a servant always trying to please the master during special occasions.
baycas says
Johnny Lin says
Best timing is when the Pope is listening for the first time, tell him how it is, who they are when there are no unto ward incidents happening. Doing it later could be affected by many unforeseen events. By telling it as early as the first day gives time to the Pope and it’s staff to inquire or investigate what Aquino was referring to. If Aquino did it before Pope went to Tacloban his message could have been waylaid by other events like the death of volunteer and so lucky those government officials did not die from that freak plane accident. If they did, Aquino’s message would not have been discussed fervently.
Mel Sta Maria exemplifies a typical subservient person, tempered in his action and lacked boldness. He is better suited for wheeling and dealing. Of course when there is quid to quo there might be corruption or illegal issues swept under the rug.
BEST TIMING is when the person has finally revealed what is in the mind, no more no less because discussion about it would start immediately! Delaying it would be subject to many unpredicted variables.
Mel Sta Maria decision is best suited only to Mel Santa Maria, the procrastinator!

My ‘contra’ opn on Atty. Sta. Maria’s,
Johnny [email protected]’s I agree. Let’s just focus on the ‘Timing’. . .
The Attorney said “simply off-tangent’ PNoy’s speech. But the Attorney does not even suggest what’s the right time? He leaves it in the air.
Maybe he assumes that PNoy should know the best time. This assumption would be futile at most. Tomorrow or what next days, we don’t know we’ll be around.
Dr. Jose Rizal couldn’t get the ‘timing’ to bring out the abuses in the Church while he was still much around before leaving abroad. Only there did he find there was the ‘timing’ and chance. So, he did.
Why would Attorney Sta. Maria limit PNoy in a way to say that PNoy should just deliver ‘a singular message’ to be enough to convey. To do that would be ineffective message. A cut-off. The message must at least be understandable. Complete. And was brief.
In legal practice, the Attorney knows no one can tell him how to write and put ‘the contents’ in legal writing to be submitted to the court. This a general rule.
The Attorney said PNoy ‘struck a discordant note.’ Again, it is PNoy’s speech and not the Attorney’s. Like a music composer – PNoy can create discordant notes to make his speech [ his musical piece ] more acceptable] in accordance with what PNoy wanted delivered. If I’m not mistaken ‘discordant notes’ are what musicians calls ‘Contra Punto’ notes. It is part of the piece created.
Also, the Attorney said ‘the people wanted to hear’ from PNoy ‘expressing the people’s feelings’ and not PNoy’s. Wrong! PNoy expressed my feelings on that speech. Maybe not Atty. Sta. Maria’s. It was also Johnny [email protected]’s feelings. Moonie’s feelings. How many here feelings’ were expressed by the speech?
‘Relevant’ is a word that is beside the point. It is the ‘timing’ that is important here. PNoy speech was for us – the people, whether not all like Atty. Sta. Maria’s beliefs in it but for the many others.
PNoy ‘was’ speaking for us. Atty. Sta. Maria is even saying this. PNoy ‘relayed our feelings’ and PNoy did it well too! Audience clapped on the speech! Even bishops clapped too. The Pope shook the hands of PNoy. Did the Pope do that? What does clapping mean? Approved! Good!
And yet, the Attorney contradicts himself by saying PNoy did not do it well. How well should it have been done? He doesn’t say. ‘And so we do it ourselves’ – what do you mean here Attorney ‘do it ourselves”
Tama si Johnny, the Attorney is not the president. The Attorney would dare put this ‘sense’ he disapproved of PNoy in his court pleadings, attacking some Church leaders for the benifit of a client. Would he?
PNoy did not ‘talk’ politics on his speech. He spoke of the truth. The truth hurts. Yes. Truth must be revealed at all costs in this situation. What politics was in the speech? If there was, it was necessarily included as a minor part in the main theme of the speech. And etc. on the speech.
What this Attorney wants of PNoy is to be timid. PNoy is not. He has to be President. Joking aside, if Dr. Jose Rizal was the Governor General during his time, some members of the Clergy would have been court-martialed and executed at the Luneta rather than the Doctor.
President Benigo C. Aquino III did speak for all of us in his speech including for Atty. Sta. Maria whether the latter liked it or not.
Timing. ‘Twas not at the wrong time. It was on time. Or it was already very late in coming but still let’s call it RIGHT ON TIME.
baycas says
It was the ‘right’ time for PNoy because he must undo what Cardinal Tagle and, most likely, the Papal Nuncio had already briefed the Vatican about “corrupt diversion of resources from the poor people” happening here.
PNoy et al knew this all along…especially because the glaring Diversionary Allocation Process of DAP must be justified. And the best justification is that due to the unholy alliance of the bishops with gloria, PNoy et al must do something good even if undertaken with corrupt means.
