Part of any top secret oplan is to name the Oplan. It is not an Oplan if it has no name. Usually, a sexy, macho name.
So when the Oplan is finally bared to the public, the operation will have a name worthy of its presumed success.
When sacked Special Action Forces chief Getulio Napeñas Jr. started singing out the names of the various Oplans meant to capture two wanted men, my hubby Alan started wondering why the same operation had so many names.
And so he asked himself – Just how many oplans are there? – and was inspired to write the following piece:
Just how many oplans are there?
Hot Manila – By Alan Robles
“Wolverine”, “Exodus”, “Terminator.” All these operation plan names swirling around the Mindanao crisis are confusing. Which is which? Just how many oplans are there anyway? Thanks to our tireless research, we are now able to present all the plans we’ve been able to identify so far.
Oplan Terminator – the failed 2014 attempt to neutralize international terrorists located in Mindanao
Oplan Wolverine – the project to neutralize the same terrorists this January
Oplan Exodus – the attempt to rescue the men who conducted Oplan Wolverine
Oplan No Show – the President’s undertaking vis-à -vis Villamor Air Base

it is simple. p-noy knew the operation would happen that day. the SAF will not go ahead without higher orders since they already know where the targets are a few days before. p-noy was in zamboanga for these reasons:
1. he needs photo ops when the mission becomes successful and i am sure his speech has been prepared;
2. he would praise purisima if the mission succeeds to try to vindicate him. that is the reason why they kept it secret from espina and roxas;
3. he is gunning for the Nobel Peace Prize that is why a capture of a high value target plus passage of the BBL may seal the deal. his parents will be remembered (they are in the 500 pesos bill) but not him. he needed something to immortalized him. his anti-corruption campaign became ridiculous as all his friends were not prosecuted.
that is why it took him 3 days before he made a public speech regarding the massacre. he needs to be in damage control and his aides need to make a good spin. he mulls the missed opportunity of the Nobel.
Rene-Ipil says
PNoy asked. “Why did the mission continue, when it had deviated so far from the original plan, and our troops were already in grave danger?”
Sir. With due respect, the assault could not have been aborted even with your personal command to do just that.
I am almost sure that General Napeñas asked the assault commander Lt. Colonel Train to consider the withdrawal of his troops. There were only ten of them that reached Marwan’s place at about 3:00 AM and had to wait for more than an hour for the remaining commandos among the 84th. At about 4:20 AM Train decided to capture Marwan knowing that Usman would surely escape.
It was a judgement call of Col. Train, the assault commander on the ground. Train knew pretty well that he and his troops would all die because the sun would surely rise before they were done. And the OPLAN mandated an all night movements. The entry and exit points were the same which would be feasible only through stealth.
Marwan was killed. His picture and DNA sample were taken. But the mission had to be completed at all cost by delivering the picture and forefinger of Marwan to safety with the help of four US Special Forces operatives. And the rest is history.
I salute the SAF 84th and 55th for their bravery and heroism. They had the chance to live but opted otherwise. I also salute Gen. Napeñas for upholding his troops’ decision to capture Marwan on the face of certain death. Also for owning the responsibility for the Fallen 44 soonest. And I thank them for making my country and the world a better place to live.
I am reminded of the Battle of La Drang Valley where an American battalion was facing thousands of Vietcongs. The ground commander was ordered by his superior to withdraw by all means to avoid sure total annihilation. But Lt. Colonel Moore defied the order. And they came through and victorious with about half of his men dead. But as promised to his troops by Col. Moore before leaving USA, they ALL came home DEAD OR ALIVE.
Rene-Ipil says
Col. Moore knew as the ground commander that the enemy was just waiting for their move to withdraw to start a massacre.
Lesson. Trust your ground commander because he is in the best position to know the situation and decide the next move to accomplish the objective.
Alan says
There is a popular story that the Order of the Maria Theresa Award of the Austro-Hungarian Empire was given to soldiers who took the initiative against the enemy. The story was it was specifically awarded to soldiers who disobeyed orders but won the battle. If they lost the battle, they were shot..
Alan says
Battle is a series of decisions you have to make hastily but judiciously. If you win, you’re a hero. If you don’t you’re dead. There is NO specific tactic that applies to all situations. Frederick the Great, who took appalling risks, said: “War is a lottery”. The dice roll one way, you’re Moore. It rolls another way you’re Custer.
Rene-Ipil says
To all desk generals who are asking why the SAF 300 did not help. They, particularly the 45th, tried but repulsed by vastly superior firepower. Had the SAF 300 insisted, the PNP would have now the Fallen 343.
Seems that the number does not tally. ONLY 299 of the 300 would surely die because one of them would be ordered by his commander to leave early and tell us what really transpired. This happened in the original 300 at the Battle of Thermopylae.
In the Battle of La Drang Valley, Col. Moore asked the embedded newsman to ride the last helicopter before sunset of the previous day and to tell the Americans the heroism of his troops. But the reporter (obviously NOT from MST or TMT or TDT) refused to leave. He begged Col. Moore to allow him to die in battle like his father, grandfather and great grandfather. It was his dream to be a soldier but his fate was not meant to be. Unfortunately for him, he survived the immensely lopsided battle.
Kalahari says
My mind is somewhat confused with so many conflicting versions but one thing keeps pressing – why did PNoy fail to order CS catapang to use whatever forces available at the time whe the drone transmissions shows the SAF being annihilated? Is the BBL more precious than the lives of his commandos?
Rene-Ipil says
You assumed facts not in evidence.
There was drone transmissions.
PNoy did not give orders.

Briefs from the AFP report on the Mamasapano debacle:
1. As early as 9am, Brig. Gen. Eduardo Pangilinan, cmdr of the army 6th infantry div., received a call from Lt. Gen. Rustico Guererro, cmdr of the army western mindanao command, about the request for reinforcements from Dep. Dir. General Leonardo Espina, PNP OIC;
2. It was only at 5:30pm under heavy fire from the MILF, that army reinforcement team deploys white phosphorous
to give soldiers cover, a preparation for “call for fire procedure” and after several heavy artillery rounds, the MILF retreated; and
3. 7pm, soldiers began retrieving the bodies of the SAF casualties. (PDI, 2/7/15)
A strong and decisive Cmdr In-Chief could have used his powers and possibly minimized the massacre unless some very influential group always cautioned him about the future of the BBL.

@caliphman,
I mentioned before:
“It’s a different matter if front liners refused to obey orders from the top.”
Mukhang hindi na nagpaawat…
Rene-Ipil says
Genersl Catapang publicly admitted that PNoy gave them proper orders. But AFP and PNP failed to coordinate. Artillery units were deployed but could not fire due to lack of CURRENT grid coordinates.
The army reinforcement team (ART), mechanized brigade and Recon company’s were at the area at about 9AM but could not advance due to sniper fire. At about 11AM to 1PM the ART engaged the enemy. It was also about the same period that the SAF 55th was wiped out. Under heavy fire the ART was able to register its position at around 5:30PM. That enabled the artillery unit to fire and the guerrillas withdrew which allowed the army to rescue and retrieve the SAF commandos.
The army and PNP did what they had to do during the battle. So, where are the drone connection and PNoy’s refusal to give orders to reinforce?
kalahari says
“CATAPANG: REINFORCEMENT TO EXTRACT SAF MEN, NOT TO FIGHT MILF”
Armed Forces Chief Gregorio Catapang Jr. admitted during a press briefing at Camp Aguinaldo that the reinforcement sent for the Mamasapano clashes in Maguindanao which killed 44 police officers were meant to extricate the troops and not engage the MILF because of the peace talks. (PDI 2/4/15)
It is clear that unlike in the Battle of the Bulge where the hard-pressed defenders of Bastogne was relieved by Patton’s 3rd army, upon orders, when he swung his mechanized army to the north instead of going to the rhineland, the AFP’s reinforcement was to extract the trapped SAF men and not to engage the MILF due to BBL.
Rene-Ipil says
Kalahari, the army did engage the MILF by firing “several heavy artillery rounds” until the enemy retreated. And I think the artillery caused damage to the enemy unless the artillery rounds were blank.
kalahari says
We are glad that as cmdr in-chief, the President in his nationwide address last Friday, claimed responsibility for the death of 44 PNP SAF sent to arrest marwan. This should help calm down a raging firestorm, with some civil society groups and clergy members demanding the resignation of PNoy. A protest rally today at the gates of Camp Crame to pressure Aquino to crack down on MILF and BIFF rebels is still pushing through.
Families of the “Fallen 44” are justifiably furious and want justice for their loved ones especially since it is becoming clear that what happened in mamasapano was no “mis-encounter,” with the government troops killed in a very brutal and barbaric manner. Some had their eyes gouged, while the skulls of others were split open and filled with leaves and dirt, their personal belongings like ATM cards and cellphones stolen.
Emotions are high, fueled by reports that the men were sent on a deadly mission codenamed “Oplan Exodus,” despite the plan’s tactical and strategic loopholes. It is still unclear why they did not receive timely reinforcement from the military or the rest of the SAF 392 elements who were part of Oplan Exodus reportedly on the President’s orders so as not to jeopardize the peace agreement with the MILF with whom the government has initiated a ceasefire. Rene, I researched the battle at Ia Drang Valley when I was younger, having watched the movie, Moore’s book “we were soldiers then…”, researched the after-action reports of Moore and the other 7th Cavalry battalion commanders, the Vietnamese brigade commanders who opposed them, etc…etc. I agree eith many things you say and disagree on some regarding that battle. Moore and his men were in fact trapped and they could not withdraw. They could not establish a safe enough LZ to withdraw by chopper even if they wanted to and they were able to leave onlymafter two other battalions who landed in other LZ’s linked up and reinforced and eventually relieved them. They were facing not vietcong guerrillas but really tough North Vietnamese mainforce regulars who overcame the tremendous air and artillery advantage Moore initially had by fighting almost hand to hand in tall grass, maneuvering their squads and platoons by whistled commands. The US claimed a huge victory claiming 2,000 enemy dead for 500 Air Cav KIA. Interestingly, Vietnamese archives claimed a victory as well claiming 1000 US killed at a cost of 700 dead.
But if I compare the SAF encounter to that battle, its only similar in elite and fearless forces were involved, an enemy who knew the terrain and how to use it, and the accomplishment of their missions which was to kill as many Vietnamese soldiers as possible, the beginning of the failed concept of measuring victory by body count.
In contrast though, planning and execution and coordination (even amongst the SAF units) in Operation Exodus was abysmal as I have already discussed in numerous posts here while in IA Drang it was flawless at all levels including air and artillery support. SAF leadership at both encounters cannot be compared because on one hand, Moore was right in the battle leading, rallying, and commanding his men and responding to enemy manuevers whilst the SAF battalion commander and Napenas were remotely leading their engaged forces. For example, 55 SAC observed enemy forces in a flanking maneuver on their left without responding to it resulting in their complete encirclement. Except for jumping into the river, the lone survivor had no escape route.
As for the SAF 300’s efforts to rescue what was left of the SAC bocking force, I am no armchair general
(Lieutenant will suffice tyvm) but that vastly superior fire power drove the 100 that did try back to the highway without suffering a single reported casualty. In fact, the 1rst Mechanized brigade with amphibious armored troop carriers offered to go them but they declined. For those who maintain the SAF 300 really tried to help in the face of hostile fire, I say….really?
Rene-Ipil says
A V150 was hit when the army artillery support tried to enter marshland at about 3PM. They also failed to enter marshland allegedly because of narrow passages.
That the 45th SAF did not suffer any casualty is not remote. Maybe they proceeded very cautiously and used appropriate avenue of approach and tactics. In addition maybe they were lucky or prayed very hard. The army did not also have any casualty except the V150. Maybe they were also lucky.
caliphman says
Fact remains a the idea of a battalion commander calling it a day
after being tasked with a desperate mission to rescue a sister unit and suffering zero casualties is sImply laughable. During WW2 or Vietnam war, that colonel including Moore would have been stripped of his command. The V150 incident you speak of was an AFP report where some BIFF snipers took sime porshots at their tanks and vehicles. It had nothing to with the supposed relief attempt by the 100 SAF men from the 3rd SAB.
Rene-Ipil says
You can laugh all you can but I really don’t know what was in the mind of the SAF commander who declined to go with the army reinforcement team at about 8:45AM. The AFP report says that the mechanized brigade linked with the SAF particularly the 45th only at about 9:20AM.
I mentioned the V150 because I thought it as component of a mechanized brigade that tried but failed to enter the marshland at about 3:00PM . The V150 incident signifies the kind of weapon the enemy had. I am sure they did not use an M16 or M14 to hit the V150. Maybe a recoilless or M203.
caliphman says
The AFP report stated clearly said that the BIFF shot at their convoy and some of their vehicles suffered flattened tires. According to the AFP official and other newspaper reports, the AFP forces on scene asked the SAF 300 to accompany them in entering the marshland but were declined. The only ‘linkup’ with the SAC 45 platoon who remained a short distance from the highway and the SAF 300 occurred was when the army accompanied the CCCH negotiators who had arranged a ceasefire entered the marshes and found what was left of the SAF raiding force.
It is not only I but the AFP and most newspaper reports which view the efforts of the SAF 300 as insufficient if not nonexistent. This is the very reason why Aquino is being asked if he issued orders for the SAF and AFP to stand down. Your original post is misleading in that it presents a conversation with Pinoy that only partly occurred. It is laden with inaccuracies about the IA Drang battle of the Vietnam conflict I have detailed in my responses. Regretfully, these inaccuracies and distortions extend to the efforts of the SAF 300 in trying to rescue the Fallen 44. A careful review of the above-mentioned reports should confirm what actually transpired and the prevailing view of those with access to facts and the reasons for their views.
Rene-Ipil says
“Your original post is misleading in that it presents a conversation with Pinoy that only partly occurred.”
I thought you already understood what Baycas was trying to tell you. That statement of PNoy is not part of any conversation with him. It was part of his speech delivered on February 5. I merely quoted an excerpt which even a grade five pupil would know if he listened to or read the text of that speech. For further clarification I think Baycas would be very patient to explain it to you. Baycas please help me.
As to the La Drang battle, I stand corrected. I did not mean to mislead anybody. Anyway there are scholars like you in this blog who could always post comment for or against my version. I must confess that I did not participate in that battle. So I am not in a position to dispute your opinion on the “inaccuracies and distortions” you believe were created by my post.

The above link is to the entire text of Aquino’s speech which you took an excerpt from, without any explanation or attribution. Your explanation for the former being that you assumes everyone has heard or read his speech. Isnt that a bit presumptious being that the blog has visitors from all over the world as the readers location counters obviously shows?
PNoy asked. “Why did the mission continue, when it had deviated so far from the original plan, and our troops were already in grave danger?”
Below is what you wrote directly below and which would on the face of it appear to be a response to Aquino’s question. Nowhere do you explain or mention that you just made it up, assuming according to you that it is unnecessary for those who read or heard the speech. For those of us who are in different time zones and separated by oceans from you, and who are trying to understand what could have been done to avoid the massacre at Massapone, I hope you understand why for some of us CPMers a little more clarity and accuracy and a lot less misplaced presumptiousness would have sowed less confusion.
Sir. With due respect, the assault could not ave been aborted even with your personal command to do just that.

Napeñas: Past ops on Marwan failed when AFP was alerted
By Camille Diola (philstar.com) | Updated February 9, 2015 – 12:43pm
MANILA, Philippines — Sacked Special Action Force commander Getulio Napeñas on Monday bared the Philippine National Police’s existing (PNP) distrust in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) due to suspected leakage of information on high-risk operations.
Speaking at the Senate committee hearing probing the deaths of the 44 SAF commandos in Maguindanao, Napeñas said that past operations targeting key terror suspects Zulkifli bin Hir, alias Marwan, and Basit Usman would fail whenever the military is informed beforehand.

SOMETHING ABOUT OPLAN BINAY
Something has been bugging me and I can’t get it off my mind. Something about the Binays.
I usually pride myself of being able to figure things out rather quickly but this one leaves me dumbfounded. When I first joined this blogsite during the days of the Corona impeachment trial I remember the heated exchange of posts between the anti and pro Corona, which the anti dominated.
When something was written about Marcos, the Marcos loyalist reminded us how he was a “great” president that made this nation “great again”. So the anti and the pro had some verbal tussles.
Everytime a blog topic is written there is always a lively discussion from both sides of the issue.
Even Pope Francis was not spared from this sort of “truism” – of both sides being presented and discussed. When Raissa posted a blog topic favorable to the Pope, a few people like “underage girl” took the opposite side on Pope Francis.
But not the Binays.
Much has been said about the Binays on a multitude of issues but practically all the commenters here converge on one side only.
Maybe I missed it but I have not read any comment from anyone that says to the effect, “Hey folks, you are all mistaken, the BSP did not lose out on the Alphaland deal because….so and so…”
No one has come forward to declare that “it is not true Binay fought hard all the way up to the Supreme Court to prevent the COA from auditing the books of BSP.”
No one has come forward to contradict Rene-Ipil and said, “look the Makati parking building is not overpriced; it is just your math is wrong.”
No one has come here to say that “Junjun is correct, morally or legally, not to appear in the SBR hearings. ”
No one from the City of Makati came forward and say, “Look the cakes are not over-priced, here taste some.”
No one has come forward to declare: “President Aquino has the unwavering support of VP Jejomar Binay in the Masasapano operation, so please stop second-guessing the President.”
We are led to believe that surveys after surveys, Binay remains to be the most widely supported presidential aspirant. And yet none of his strong supporters is strong enough to come here and say “Hey, Baycas you got it wrong about Binay and let me explain why…..” Or, to say, “Hey Leona, your joke about Binay is not funny because the truth is….”
Why is it that no one will take the cudgels for Binay in Raissa’s blog site? Why?
This one I can’t really figure out so I took it upon myself to launch my own OPLAN BINAY to find out why.

I am pleased to be Mr. Binay’s representative here on Raissa’s blog. The reason is simple, so let me save you the time. My man Jojo believes that the intellectual elite who inhabit this blog are largely an irrelevant minority busy talking to themselves. You know, a lot like a teen occasionally disappears into the bathroom for an extended period of time. No harm, no foul. His paid hacks . . . er, I mean public relations pros . . . are at the tabloids pounding out hate-Aquino and hate-Roxas messages. I’m a keen observer of the discussion threads there, particularly at that C/D/E rag named the Inquirer. I like it when the Chinese trolls and White Bufffalo, who I’d bet has an office at the American Embassy, get rude and crude. It’s like in junior high school when there’d be a fist fight across the street after school. Or when JoeAm and that eloquent nationalist Parekoy roll up their sleeves and exude dirt from their mouths.
yvonne says
@JoeAm
Ah, but the pro-Marcos, even some anti-Pope Francis, won’t make the mistake of thinking about us as irrelevant, and they will heartily engage us in heated debates, but not the Binay supporters.
Even a pro-FOI legislator came forward essentially declaring “I’m listening…” and he posted some rejoinders because, hmmm, we are relevant.
But not the Binay supporters. Why?
Joe America says
Because we (the gogo Jojo crowd) are too smart to engage in dialogue with smart, articulate, high-principled people, as they’d likely “show” us as being manipulative liars. Instead we send our internet force out to troll the tabloids where our fertilizer sells and nobody discusses sh*t.
Joe America says
Raissa’s blog sells into the A/B crowd. Tabloids into the C/D/E crowd. Binay has written off the A/B crowd as small and irrelevant. He’s purchased the loyalties from A/B that he needs, the rest can go take a fat flying leap because they don’t represent many votes at all.

RE YOUR OPLAN BINAY
The reason no member of CPM has come out in defense of Binay in Raissa’s Blog is due to
— (listing only a few items and at random) the actuations of Binay regarding his non-appearance at the Senate BRS inspite of the mother BR Com itself inviting him as he himself suggested he would appear if invited by the mother BR Com; his withdrawal from the debate he himself challenged Trillanes on the flimsy excuse of not taking advantage of one who is not a lawyer; the Tiu fiasco and the suspicious use of him as dummy with abundance of details provided by Mercado; the use of companies as participating in the makati bldg bid and belied by one compamy the non-appearance of of Limlingan, Baloloy not to appear, very suspiciously at his prodding not to; and myriad other items including obvious lies we read coming from him —
which partial list leads reasonably intelligent thinking people such as we are here at CPM (stating this with some immodesty, since I am including myself) VERY HARD PRESSED to make a positive defense or comment about Binay, especially since Binay wants to be our President. If he is seeking only the office of a Barangay Captain, I believe out of certain charity, several here may come in defense. (In context, in terms of scale what sins were attributed to Corona is a drop in the bucket compared to that of this President Wannabe,)
On the matter of a person outside of CPM who wants to comment here, such person will, of course, go through the minor process of registering with a name and email address. With that process done in a matter of a few minutes, that person, name him “B-supporter.” can start to present facts or comments in defense of Binay. But I believe the sharp minds here (exclude me, so I don’t have to make the immodesty plea again) can make mincemeat of B-supporter, even if B-supporter is Binay himself. That is why there is no attempt by such a person not now with CPM to become a member and post his P5000-worth of defense for Binay. Instead of giving some positive image for his principal such a person will make it worse. So why bother, he will say.
(Poorly phrased, the above, but I hope I make my thoughts through.)

$5-M bounty not for SAF families

$5-million bounty
MANILA, Philippines – The families of police commandos slain in fighting following the capture and death of Zulkifli bin Hir, alias Marwan, cannot get the $5-million bounty that the US government had offered for information leading to the Malaysian terrorist bomb maker.
In an e-mail to The STAR, US embassy assistant information officer Anna Richey said officers and employees of a foreign government are generally not eligible for the Rewards for Justice.
Estrada was reacting to reports that two MILF members would get the reward for leading the commandos to the house of Marwan in Mamasapano.

Just hot off the ABS press.
More news on the mighty 300 SAF troopers and their commanders who apparently were not ordered to go in and rescue their comrades who they could hear were fighting for their lives thru their radios/cellphones and the nearby shooting. List of possible explanations. Cowardice, knowing there were at least 1,000 well armed MILF in the marshlands waiting to annihilate them. Their primary mission was to guard the highway, which they accomplished superbly.Other reports say they were tasked as reserve and reinforcing forces, critical as the SAF did not plan or want AFP help. I would say the latter is the most plausible, that in addition, Napenas and the reserve had no rehearsed contingency plan for a pitched battle in broad daylight against a fully alerted and prepared enemy. The most likely scenario is they were waiting for orders from Purisima/Aquino whose plan B was to use the CCCH committee to arrange a ceasefire and thus avoid scuttling the BBL negotiations.
As I have posted before, the SAF 300 was ordered to stand down. But it would have to be Aquino who decided and gave the order. The suspended Purisima had no standing outside Napenas to order the AFP, the CCCH, and the MILF to abide by the ceasefire provisions of the truce agreement. While he has taken full responsibility for the SAF massacre, the political cost and public recriminations of abandoning the Fallen 44 in order to save the BBL is one that his handlers probably still think Pinoy should avoid.
BFD says
@Caliphman
Sorry again, pre, but I have to rebut you on this.
You sounded like Dante Ang of Manila Times who wrote an incredible story about the Mamasapano incident.
Now, we know who Dante Ang is.
http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/inquirerheadlines/nation/view/20070706-75104/Arroyo_adviser_Dante_Ang_linked_to_%91Erap%92_ads%3F
Misinformation/disinformation is the name of the game right now. Let’s wait for the reports to come in. We can piece it together as it rolls out.
This is just a police operation gone awry with the death of the SAF44, if I may add 16 Muslim combatants and 4 civilians.
caliphman says
I too am waiting for more verifiable info and you have a right to rebut. But if you are to have any credibility you might want to support your rebuttal with relevant reasons and not citing a separate event. Thanks for your opinion though different as it is from mine.
BFD says
Sorry about that, I just didn’t want to glorify Dante Ang’s article here, but you can go to Manila Times article, it’s searchable where he said and I quote,
Title of the article is
PNoy ordered AFP, SAF to stand down
Lots of misinformation going around, just like the bullets that flew in Mamapasano on that fateful day….
BFD says
Dante Ang wrote on his article:
Excerpt:
caliphman says
BFD, that is so uncannIly similar to the scenario I was suggesting now I understand your comment. Thanks for linking it as I hardly ever bother reading the Times. This is however presented as a news story rather than opinion so if it was wrong, you and moonie would be right in accusing the author of spreading disinformation. But please be careful and dont assume just because an unnamed single source hard to believe story appears in an editorially suspect rag like the Manila Times or that other paper The Standardsomething or other, its automatically untrue. There was an article in that other paper I linked into here because it sounded plausible on its face that our kind blog host here Alan Robles was telling me I should ignore because it was single sourced, unverifiable, and it was published at the standard. The story was about a SAF force on a mission to get a highly publicized terrorist without Mar Roxas knowing or authorizing it and pointing instead to Purisima and Pinoy. That was several blogs ago and look where we are now.
BFD says
I’m reprinting the Inquirer article of the timeline for the Mamasapano Encounter according to the AFP report.
Please notice what SAF Officer Lalan did at the end of the story.
I also find it interesting the contrasting demeanor of CS General Catapang and SAF General Napenas in regards to the Mamasapano Encounter.
General Catapang was being interviewed on GMA7 where he was nearly in tears because of what happened to SAF44 while General Napenas’ demeanor was somewhat [defiant?] or [proud?] or just no remorse.
caliphman says
BFD, its woth responding to you because you are neither questioning my motivations and are willing to share what you base your thoughts on. I believe the article from ABS is full of new information and corroborates other sources of information. In fact, I have read the piece you reprinted and it is consistent with this most recent one. They both inform us that the 300 SAF troopers did not make a strong effort to rescue the fallen 44. The article I linked concluded that the 300 troopers were not ordered to. If you bother reading it as I did yours carefully, the troopers who were interviewed wanted to but instead ended up idling by the highway. Why they were not ordered to is the crucial question raised by this article and as your piece informs, it is very important to Officer Lana whose entire was wiped out because no one came to help.
Now I have an opinion based on reasons and info I have presented in my post above on what order and by who and why. I have clearly stated it not as fact or information but my belief based on what is I believe is likely and what is known.
This is a forum and we should be entitled to present and dispute opinions without being called rumor mongerers, misinformers or disinformers by those who have different or no opinions. We all gain here by exchanging and sharing our views and the information and reasoning behind them. A buffet is a bad place for a diet, a forum the wrong place if you dislike opinions.
baycas says
@caliphman,
Inspired by @Parekoy’s ‘rendition’ of the “The Plotters” songs…
PNoy is singing secretly “My Secret” (of the ‘stand down’ order).
Executive Privilege might save him.
But as I said in the past, he will be judged according to what will be revealed in the future. As for me, it was a tough call to make.
I am viewing it as a “Greater Good” objective.
baycas says
Btw, @caliphman, please check 3:46 mark of the latest video you linked above.
Were the 55th SAC decimated already?
Investigators must create a full timeline taking into consideration ALL the players’ accounts on that fateful day.
baycas says
caliphman says
Baycas, I have not had a chance to check my cell for news so Pinoy admitting he issued standdown orders
is news. I have had a very good batting average in this forum in coming up with very controversial and unpopular predictions that end up correct, but this one I wanted to be true. I refuse to accept that these 44 brave men were willingly abandoned by their comrades out of cowardice. And the thing is I truly believe Aquino probably made the most difficult but IMHO correct decision in his life. He had to balance the lives of 44 brave men against the surely far greater toll from reigniting an all out war when there was a chance of the CCCH peacefully saving the trapped units.
baycas says
I agree, @caliphman.
As to news…no categorical admission yet.
Again…
Transparency, fearing accountability, may not be had. Purisima’s invocation of ‘executive privilege,’ IMO, is a sign.
baycas says
However, there really are times when ‘State’s secrets’ must remain secret…
PNoy’s bosses I’m pretty sure will understand.
leona says
Pres. Nixon used the ‘executive privilege’ on the Watergate scandal. US Sup.Court overruled his contention, primarily that it involved ‘a criminal case’ at that, etc.
Sec. Neri’s case, he was upheld by our SC but there were substantial different facts that upheld Sec. Neri’s refusal to continue to answer questions before the Senate.
Here the ‘Stand Down’ issue, if we may, might be ‘like’ this:
. . .’ To send 300 SAF reinforcements to the other SAF units needing help will compromise the BBL peace agreement. I want this agreement to be pushed through no matter what. So, I order that no reinforcements be made to the SAF commandos.’
‘With that decision, knowing that the SAF commandos needing help, will be wiped out, in relation to the BBL peace agreement, the latter is more important. I will uphold this decision under Executive privilege.’
If Exe. privilege would make a revelation of the involvement of US troops’ participation and their delivery of ‘Intel’. . . a good one for executive privilege.
But not to order reinforcements to the SAF commandos needing help under Executive privilege tenor does not appear acceptable not saving lives of one’s troops. There is an on-going shooting already between the forces, what prejudice would be done on the BBL peace agreement under the situation?
Why not just admit ‘Okay, I should have ordered reinforcements. I made a mistake. Error of judgment on my part. I am so sorry. Let’s proceed to our other duties.’
It clears up the issue. Doubts are answered. Admission is made. End of the matter.
baycas says
If this early Purisima had already invoked Executive Privilege when it concerned PNoy then we may expect he will do it again next week.
The Executive Session will determine whether there is right use of Executive Privilege or not.
caliphman says
Inspector Pabalinas was that radiomam and that was the last radio contact received y Napenax from that unit. But there were numerous cell phone calls and texts to their families. We have to define the word decimated in terms of remaining live troopers and get a log of cell transmissions that grace poe is requesting.
leona says
All these ‘accounts’ are in writing based on subsequent investigations, etc.
Should the AFP and the PNP organizations have a UNIT or GROUP that accompany combat units to TAPE RECORDS on films combat events like what the US Army etc., during WW II did? Documentary films at that.
That’s what is seen in Youtubes nowadays. Having documentary films will lessen or avoid guess work information as investigated. A drone could do documenting also while fighting is engaged between gov’t forces vs the enemies.
We running and jailing corrupt officials who stole hundreds of millions of pesos and do not tell us the gov’t cannot afford to buy 3 or 4 DRONES for the purpose.
Thanks to one of the CPMers here who mentioned about ‘drones.’ I remember it. So, making mention of it again.
moonie says
tama ka dyan, bfd. you speak like one with fortitude and credibility, kudos to you.
so many misinformations blooming in raissa’s blog. mamumulaklak kaagad, like obnoxious weeds sprouting here and there, 1st to bloom and 1st to be wilt. nalanta at lumalanta. we humor misinformers, not condone them, and then let them run out of steam. how very not reassuring some of us are. we nod and nod to misinformers and then say thank you, but no thanks. it’s not them, but us, who choose what to believe. misinformers can only try and grind their teeth.
misinformation persuade with all the tenacity of emotions, words intended to crestfall, to overwhelm, to disuade vs the cold hard facts of truth.
and like anyone, I’ll wait for official report. better that way.
leona says
The ‘Reports’ would be coming from what, – the Board of Inquiry? I doubt on this. Who are the members of this BOI?
Just like the [USA] Warren Report of the JFK assassination. Too many unanswered pertinent and relevant questions that remains until now. Inconclusive whether a lone gunman or how many were there?
I can wait for the BOI report but with an open mind to know it for so many angles etc.
BFD says
@caliphman
I’m sorry if you misunderstood me, (fog of comment) but I did not call you rumor mongerer, misinformer or disinformer. But if you have read my comment above, I’m pointing to Dante Ang, which told a tall tale, so that’s why I associated a link of him establishing his connection with GMA.
caliphman says
No you surely did not but in reading you comment, you used rebut and I presumed the rebuttal was by classifying my opinion in the same category as that of a paid hack. That part of my response referring to rumor mongering was not directed at you and those were the words he by insinuation I felt I was being accused of. This has happened before with the two of us in a previous comment. I was responding to multiple comments including yours and someone accused the SAF 300 of cowardice and being lazy, I started by just addressing my comment to you and later addressing the cowardice comment. You were right in denying using the word coward. That was my fault too and I am sorry for that. We have both been in this blog a while and I respect and value your views and opinions. Others I am not sure yet..one way or the other! lol
BFD says
LOL. Again, sorry about that. I won’t use the word “rebut” again, ever.
LOL.
Maybe Baycas is right after all, there is a higher authority that prevented SAF300 from reinforcing their SAF44 on the battlefield, and it’s all hidden in their respective text messages.
Too much sensationalism in the media will really suck a military operation dry. It’s like what happened in the Luneta hostage fiasco when the media aired the arrest of the brother of the hostage taker, that the hostage taker went ballistic and started shooting.
Remember, how the Malaysian Defense forces dealt with the ragtag Filipinos who went to their town and declared it as their own? There was news blackout. Only the Malaysian spokesperson was speaking until the last day of the fighting, and the Philippine media respected that.
Here, it’s a different matter… the authorities telegraph their punches via the media.
caliphman says
I guess a free press is part of the price of freedom. By a free press, it means having to deal with all kinds of reporting, both good and bad, crazy and not, accurate and made up. Eventually the public figures out what paper or reporting consiste tly meets their needs.
Parekoy says
Thank you Mr. President for accepting responsibility!
If he did this blanket acceptance of responsibility and the compassion he tried to convey to the fallen and the nation during his first address to the nation, then he should have not been in that pickle.
But even if he is a tad late, he did what he was supposed to do and greatly calm down his bosses.
The Platters (pun intended) were shattered and so as the diffusion of the call for withdrawal of support to the dismay of The Plotters, not the musical kind.
As a tribute to the fallen, I will try my best to use one of the best Musical Groups’ legacies to mankind, their music!
The Platters muffled The Plotters!
Corn Fields of Dreams
Aquino answered My Prayer! to continue My Dream and our dream of Tuwid na Daan. Only You can extricate from the mess you inflicted on yourself and our nation by saying I’m Sorry.
The Great Pretender was silenced for a moment and excused himself to check if It’s Raining Outside. The Great Pretender’s son was there waiting under a parasol for his Twilight Time.
Your apologists went mad for Fear of Losing You. I hope that your apology to the nation will not exacerbate their Heartache for they felt they were left Washed Ashore. I reminded them to ”Think before you walk” because ”You’ll Never Know” how smarter our Filipinos have become!
Remember When Filipinos were with your family Mr. President? Remember the Heartaches we shared when your Dad was assassinated and when your Mom left us? Both are ”One in a Million” for their love of our country with gratitude we said, ”I love you, 1000 times!”
When our fallen SAF 44 heroes died and when we rightfully asked for answers whether you moved Heaven and Earth in order to save them, you did avoid to reply. Instead you acted as ”If I Didn’t Care”? Instead of saying ”I’m sorry your eulogy was like a Sleepy Lagoon. The families of the fallen in their Helpless situation were searching and asking, ”Where?” “Where is justice?” When the fallen’s Red Sails in the Sunset, you acted insensitively and lost your Magic Touch…
I am one of those who reminded you, ”It isn’t Right”, when your priority was gravely out of touch! Only Because we cared about you that was why we reminded you of your faults and you learn from them so you become stronger. Some of your Enchanted loyalists accused us of seeing the Trees instead of the forest, whereas we just want to help you wipe away the fog since we know that sometimes, the Smoke Gets in Your Eyes. We believed you when you said, “On My Word of Honor” you are going to jail the corrupt and promised us with reforms, unlike The Great Pretender and some of your loyalist propagandists who just give it a lip service and seldom practice.
”You’re Making a Mistake” by not letting go of Purisima, was the cry of those who believes in you. Your enemies pounced and Ebb Tide of support from the AFP-PNP was for them to exploit. We strongly reminded you that Only You can save the Republic and we care for Fear of Losing You! You thought it is “Hard to Get a Thing Called Love” again, but no, if you listen to your Bosses’ voices, we are compassionate and Love Must Go On, but first you have to say, I’m Sorry!
You were wrong when you said to Purisima, ”I Need You All the Time”. Nobody is indispensable, Mr. President, only the well-being of our Nation is! Now that you listened, and announced that Puri Doesn’t Work Here Anymore is a Sweet, sweet Lovin to our ears!
Even it is a tad late, we still appreciate your courage to admit responsibility and join us in giving tribute to our fallen heroes by singing the Song for the Lonely…
As a parting reminder, be transparent, be accountable, and let justice prevail! . Please don’t let your incompetent subordinates hide from the tired “Executive Privilege” defense. We don’t want you to give us the impression that you condone the corrupt and incompetent from hiding the truth by their objective: You’ll Never Know!”
Before we were a nation who practiced, To Each his Own, but Once in A While opportunity knocks, and naturally we need to seize it! My Dream, your dream, our dream is no longer a dream! It has been hatched and all we need to do is nurture it.

And during the Senate investigations these are the scenarios:
When Puri is asked ”Why did the debacle happen”, he might reply,
Your honors, I Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil, See No Evil …
The family of the fallen, with So Many Tears and The Sound of Fury , will insist that he should Tell The World ! what happened and ”I’m Sorry is not enough!
The lone survivor will recall his ordeal at the Sad River and much different from the promise Down The River of the Golden Dreams …
Purisima might claim that his Memories in that Twilight of Time are ”Out of My Mind. . He might feign he do ”Wish it were me.”
He could plead, “I did not intend to Bark, Battle, and Bail!”, and he was not responsible for Every Little Movement of his troops! He will claim that Espina and Roxas are not Strangers to him. Others, he says, accused him of leaving them in the dark because he has this Winner Take All attitude. But he will Sincerely claim that he is not lying ”On My Word of Honor”
Purisima would also apologize if his long silence appeared like he was Indifferent …And if ever the inquirers find him not guilty, he is willing to serve again and please, Take Me Back, Take Me Back! .
When it is Ochoa’s turn to be grilled, he would say that he is one of the most loyal to Aquino, “He is My Old Flame” …He will deny that Binay is his True Lover nor they had a blood compact to proclaim their Immortal Love ! Please stop the innuendos that there is such a Mystery of You .
Yes! He will admit, that during the past election, he said, “Voo-Vee-Ah-Bee” nay! Vote for Bee-nay! And please don’t judge my friend Bee-nay as the Devril, only because With His Ring of corruptions! “Your Honors”, he would plead, No Matter What You Are for in politics, please don’t be hypocrites for You are one in a Million who also plunders the billions of this nation!
Trillanes would interject! “Mr. Anti-Terrorism Czar, what was your involvement in the Oplan Exodus? Were you coordinating with Purisima?”
Ochoa, would pause for a minute then stood up and say, “Your Honors, with regards to my friend Purisima, I’m Just A Dancing Partner!
Trillanes would suspect and ask, “I did not know you know how to dance Mr. Anti-Terrorism Czar>”
Ochoa would take out his smart phone and the music will fill the hall with, ”Shake It Up Mambo…” while Ochoa awkwardly moves his hips out of sync with the rhythm and also sings along ”Shake It Up Mambo…” like the town drunk walking in a zigzag pattern, and reeks the hall with the smell of alcohol.
Poe would save her key supporter from any further embarrassment, bangs the gavel and proclaims, “Session adjourned!”
TV Cameras will pan to the Senate President and will share to millions how Drilon mesmerizes the people in the gallery by his extra-ordinary ability to make his sandwich in his Platter disappear in one gulp…

In the visit by the the allies — including long-time acolyte Honasan — to old-man Enrile to greet him advance happy birthday (kuno), the old man advised them not to destabilize the administration, just observe what is happening, and act appropriately only after getting the facts of the situation.
This is known as “tabla-panalo.” Indeed you cannot teach old men new tricks.

Well, I’m happy to report that my man Jojo Binay was in top form tonight listening to that insensitive President give his little propaganda piece. My man listened quietly, resisted the urge to shoot spitwads at the Noy, and clapped properly with due lack of enthusiasm afterward. Then he got up and left. There is no truth at all to the rumor that he subsequently went to the men’s CR and kicked a urinal off the wall, frustrated that his chance to evict Aquino just went down the toilet because the speech was sincere, took responsibility, evinced determination to get Usman and find a way to peace, and was heartfelt in expressing care for SAF families. But he recovered quickly and emerged, without washing his hands, to go out and scmooze the people who hate being seen with him.
I am sticking with Binay because he is leading in the polls and I want to look good after the election in 2016. I hold up as my model about half the House of Representatives.

Your mole is obviously a pervert, running around the men’s room and spying on Vice Presidents. He is undoubtedly playing politics with such malicious accusations. Non-boss: Ser, baka talaga makaputukuan natin ang MILF at BIFF, parang dapat yata me iba pa tayong preparasyon. Baka kelangan din alamin natin kung nasaan ang mga advantageous positions para sa atin.
