Impeached Chief Justice Renato Corona to demand resignation of President Aquino

By Raïssa Robles

Things just got more interesting.

UPDATE: Detained Senator Juan Ponce Enrile has just been brought to Makati Medical Center because of pneumonia, according to ABS-CBN’s Jing Castaneda.

I just received word that the impeached former Chief Justice Renato Corona is now at Club Filipino “to demand the immediate resignation/removal of President (Benigno) Aquino for the mamasapano carnage and other urgent issues.”

UPDATE: Corona showed up in Lipa, Batangas instead of Club Filipino to join the event of the Naitonal Transformation Council (NTC). I wonder what the link is between the NTC and the Solidarity 4 Sovereignty which earlier announced Corona’s presence at its event in Club Filipino.

Here is the press release of the event:

Solidarity 4 Sovereignty (S4S), a broad multi-sectoral movement, will hold a press conference on Thursday (Feb. 26) 10 a.m. at Club Filipino in San Juan to demand the immediate resignation/removal of President Aquino for the Mamasapano carnage and other urgent issues.

Among the speakers are Atty. Ramon Pedrosa, Linda Montayre of S4S; Fr. Eliseo Mercado Jr.; (Ret) Col. Gene Mariano; Archbishop Oscar Cruz; Bishop Nicanor Yniguez; Former SC CJ Renato Corona; Butch Valdez of Save the Nation and Atty. Ben Paulino.

They will be joined by MP Paguio, Association of Student Council Presidents and several University Council Presidents who will issue a call for more people participation in the Feb. 27 student walk-out and Mendiola march.

Other speakers are Muslim leaders, Lumad leaders, retired PNP and AFP officers and SAF 44 kin.

S4S seeks to unite Filipinos against corruption and incompetence under the Aquino regime and to uphold national sovereignty.

ABS-CBN’s online news channel abs-cbnnews.com  asked me to attend yesterday’s book launching of ex-President Fidel Ramos’ former national security adviser Jose Almonte. I filed a news story on the launch entitled “FVR bares hurts on EDSA People Power anniversary.”

I am still writing the review of Almonte’s memoir.

After which I will make chismis about the launch itself.

On Wednesday, the 29th anniversary of Edsa People Power, my analysis appeared in South China Morning Post entitled:

Opponents of Benigno Aquino hope for return of people power

On anniversary of 1986 movement, three groups are organising rallies against its heroine’s son

Raissa Robles in Manila

As the Philippines today commemorates the 29th anniversary of the first People Power revolution, efforts are under way to hold a similar peaceful uprising – this time to unseat the son of the 1986 movement’s heroine.

President Benigno Aquino, son of People Power icon Corazon Aquino, faces demands that he resign from three groups spanning the political spectrum. Members of these groups are staging week-long protests to demand the president step down over a disastrous commando operation on January 25 that killed a suspect in the 2002 Bali bombings but left 44 police dead.

Among the president’s opponents are his mother’s brother Jose Cojuangco and Cojuangco’s wife and former governor of Tarlac province, Margarita Cojuangco, who have formed a group called the February 22 coalition.
Last Sunday, the couple – who held posts in the previous administration of president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo – joined a motorcade to the People Power shrine on Manila’s Edsa highway and found it ringed by riot policemen.
“This is the only Aquino who’s afraid of People Power,” Margarita Cojuangco fumed about her nephew.

Earlier, the couple publicly demanded their nephew resign and give way to an “advisory council”. Margarita Cojuangco claimed Vice-President Jejomar Binay had already agreed that if Aquino resigned he would form such a council.

Binay’s spokesman Joey Salgado said that Jose Cojuangco and Binay had spoken but that the vice-president agreed to no such thing.

Also working for Aquino’s removal is the National Transformation Council (NTC) led by Cardinal Ricardo Vidal and seven bishops together with ex-president Arroyo’s defence chief Norberto Gonzales. The NTC has proposed a “caretaker government” to institute political and electoral reforms.

However, Archbishop Socrates Villages said his colleagues did not speak for all 131 bishops but were merely expressing their own views.

The radical left-wing Bayan Muna party is also staging protests near the presidential palace this Friday. Spokesman Teodoro Casino said they proposed replacing Aquino with a “people’s council for national unity, reforms and peace, basically a two-year interim government”.

You can read the rest of the article here.

The Straits Times of Singapore has also picked up from my blog post on the efforts of President Aquino’s aunt and uncle to remove him from office. The Straits Times’ piece is entitled – Aquino’s relatives leading efforts to remove him.

You can view it here.

Here is how the Military Chain Of Command works:
(It clearly tells that the Commander-In-Chief does not solely exercise operational control)

    (source: www(dot)foxnews(dot)com/story/2003/02/24/us-military-chain-command/

    Excerpt:
    Unified and Specified Operations
    • “Unified Commands” consist of elements from two or more services placed under a single commander who exercises operational control over the forces assigned to him.
    • Service forces may be organized under subordinate joint commands.
    • Specified commands have a broad continuing mission and are normally composed of forces primarily from one service. Within these unified and specified organizations, each military department (Army, Navy and Air Force) retains responsibility for administration and logistical support of its assigned forces under the directive authority of the CINC.

Daily Tribune today’s special from the “kulang ng pansin” boys

The Aquino administration had allegedly received $750 million, or around P33.5 billion, from Malaysia in exchange for the passage of the controversial Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL).
Lawyer Homobono Adaza at a news forum yesterday noted that Malacañang’s refusal to comment on the issue only fueled speculations that indeed it had received the funds.

LOL “No one in the Aquino government denied the information that has been going around. And there is this admission of silence on the part of the government,” he said. LOL

Adaza, along with columnist Herman Tiu Laurel, had earlier filed treason charges against President Aquino and some of his Cabinet members and MILF leaders for entering into a peace agreement with the Moro rebel group and for supporting an “unconstitutional” bill that seeks to create an autonomous Bangsamoro political entity that would benefit the MILF.

I want to share this video of an interview of Pia Hontiveros with Greg Garcia, a veteran advertising and PR man. It is the most sensible, workable way I have heard for the President to maneuver out of this crisis.

    The video starts at 23:17.

Unlike Greg Macabenta, another adman who is very destructive, this one looks for an honest way to resolve this without burning down the house.

I hope Malacanang listens to him.

“During those times I interviewed Almonte, he often pointed out that his job as national security adviser entailed protecting the president’s image.

Now I understand what he really meant by that.

Almonte further disclosed that Mrs/ Arenas wanted his help to run for the Senate in 1995 – and after that the presidency. His refusal led to a bitter falling out.

Unknown to the 200 guests who came to Almonte’s book launching last February 25, Mrs. Arenas’ daughter Congresswoman Rachel Arenas was present – not to congratulate Almonte – but to hand-deliver what we can surmise was an angry letter from her mother.”

KMU ASKS TAGLE TO SUPPORT CALLS FOR THE PRESIDENT’S RESIGNATION: THE IMPLICATION

In a London interview, Archbishop Cardinal Tagle stated that he opposed the resignation of the President to be replaced by a council. He questioned the credibility of the personalities who will constitute such body. Instead he said that we must work together to strengthen the government institutions. He added that the election is near; let the people determine the next leader.

COMES NOW the call of the Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) for Tagle to hear the workers’ plight and the latter reconsidering support for Aquino and his replacement by a council.

IMPLICATION OF KMU’S CALL TO TAGLE

TO ME it is very clear that KMU considers Archbishop Cardinal Tagle the sanest, most rationale top leader of the Philippine Catholic Church. The KMU is not content with the voices of Cardinal Vidal, Bishops like Arguelles, and has-beens like Corona and Tatad. No, KMU has to call the singular person of Tagle. Thank God there is such a person as Archbishop Cardinal Tagle. The trust and friendship of Pope Francis on Tagle has been confirmed.
