Nearly 500 incredible photographs on People Power 1983 to 1986 in Trinoma QC up to Monday evening

I urge everyone to drop by the Theater Level in Trinoma Mall (Quezon City) to view nearly 500 incredible photographs snapped by veteran photo journalist Sonny Camarillo.

I guarantee you, you will weep when you see these powerful photographs. Such as the one below taken in Luneta during the funeral of Ninoy –

I met Sonny while covering a protest rally after Ninoy Aquino died.. Probably seeing that I was new to covering rallies, he took me by the hand and guided me. He told me where to position myself so that I could anticipate the action. He told me how to sniff out danger.

This year, Sonny has mounted an incredible collection of all the photos he took during the period starting with Ninoy’s wake and funeral to the Edsa People Power in 1986.

The photographs show the flowering of People Power.

After viewing them, you will realize how incredible it was that we did as a nation, kicking out a Dictator long past his shelf life with our bare hands.

People have asked me whether by siding with those who kicked out Marcos I was being biased against the Marcoses.

Let me put it this way. The Marcoses destroyed democracy. The media is a pillar of democracy for its role is to help guarantee the accountability of leaders who hold power. Which is why I was for the restoration of democracy in 1986.

What we have done with that democracy is another story.

If there is one thing you still have to do to mark the 30th anniversary of Edsa People Power, it is to view Sonny’s photographs.

    5. Porke po pro-Israel  ako eh gusto ni Duterte na sirain ako sa Mindanao. Kami po ni Barack Obama eh mga supporters ng mga Hudyo dahil po marami rin po kaming nakuhang campaign funds sa kanila. Kasi po yung mga drug lords ay lumipat na kay Poe, dahil kay Sotto at Chavit, at yung iba ay kay Duterte dahil dati na nilang friend sya sa Davao City pa.

Inamin ni Bebe ang aming relasyon at umiyak na sabay sabi kay Noynoy na may pangangailangan din naman sya at ako daw ang nakakaintindi sa pagkababae ni Bebe.           The Boy Called Juan Pusong

          Once there was a boy whose name was Juan Pusong. He was very mischievous.

          One day he went to the fields to see the cows of the King. He thought of playing a prank on the king. He
          cut the tails of several cows and then drove the cows away. Then he stuck the tails in mud holes, with half
          of each tail sticking out of the mud.

          Then he went to the King’s palace and told the King that many of his cows had jumped into the mud holes
          and drowned.

          The King was very sad. He went to the fields to see his cows. When he saw the tails sticking out of the
          mud, he became even sadder.

          But when he asked the people nearby he learned of Juan Pusong’s mischief. The King became angry. He
          ordered his men to put Juan Pusong in a cage. The following day the cage was to be thrown into the sea so
          that Juan Pusong would drown.

          Early in the morning, Juan Pusong cried and cried. A man came along and asked, “Why do you cry, Juan?
          Why are you in that cage?”

          Juan Pusong answered, “I am crying because the King is forcing me to marry his beautiful daughter but I
          don’t want to.”

          The man thought that to marry the King’s daughter would make him a very lucky fellow. So the man
          suggested that they change places. The man put on Juan’s clothes and placed himself in the cage. Juan
          Pusong put on the man’s clothes and went home.

          The following day, the King’s men came and carried the cage with the man in it and threw it into the sea.
          The next day, Juan Pusong passed by the King’s palace. The King was surprised to see him. He thought
          that Juan Pusong had drowned the day before.

          The King was about to put Juan Pusong in prison again. But Juan told the King that he had returned from
          the bottom of the sea. There he had seen the King’s dead parents and relatives. They were all very happy
          and they wanted the King to come for a visit and see their beautiful houses.

          The King marveled at Juan’s story. He wished to see his parents and relatives in their beautiful houses. So
          he had himself put in a cage and ordered his men to throw the cage into the seas. And thus the silly king
          was drowned. And clever Juan Pusong became king in his place.

    • Reminds me.. My grandfather was a coconut farmer in Bicol since the 60’s. He died leaving behind a folder of documents which is now under my mother’s custody. Documents include land titles, deeds and coco levy receipts.

    Binay really sucked! G U I L T Y tattoed on his forehead!

    Duterte was as real as he can be. He was the most sincere. He is sincere na killer sya. Sincere na he will offer leadership. Pilyo rin noong sinabi na mas qualified si Binay sa pagka-presidente. Reinforced his notoriety as a K I L L E R.

    Poe changed her style and no longer a monotonous copy of Escudero. She was feisty and gesticulate a lot. Well prepared and even threw some curve balls at Binay and Roxas. She zinged Binay with Philrem and Kulimbat, while she unsuccessfully tried diminishing Roxas on his DILG stint. Binay successfully reminded the viewers of Poe being once an AMERICAN

    Roxas change his style also and used more active words. Very quick for a comeback by giving statistics and facts, which in one point Duterte apologized. He cross-examined Binay and Binay squirmed and fought woty Goebbels tag that was lame. He schooled Poe on how a debate should be and did not let Poe land even a jab and he threw counter punches that made Poe looked like what she really is: An Amateur. Roxas used a Bibingka analogy for the Bottom-Up-Budgeting ( BUB), which empowers the Barangays. New Roxas Moniker: Boy BIBINGKA.

    Overall Roxas showed his superiority and Poe landed a distant second, while Duterte is in a dead heat with Poe by projecting sincerety that was absent among the other candidates. Binay had lost the debate before it even started and was there to pull down Poe by attacking Poe’s allegiance to America.

    This debate is far better than the first one in letting the viewers know more about the persona and their wit or the lack of it.

        miriam was let down by her bise. akala ko if the president cannot make it, the bise steps up. had bong marcos made the effort and offer to take miriam’s place, iba sana ang paningin ng taumbayan sa kanya. say, he cannot let his party be unrepresented in such important debate, silent and unheard, when he can take up miriam’s mettle and fight for her cause. kahit unprepared siya, he will be gonged for courage and for standing up. he sure can ad-lib at the debate and does not have to win it. the experience alone is priceless, give him good grounding for when vice presidential debate comes around. plus the nationwide exposure is 2nd to none.

    • Interesting assessment. From my neutral, non-meddling shoebox, I noticed that there were ganging ups on Binay, Poe, and Roxas, but not Duterte. Do you figure this is because he intimidates others, as he can do with his “Fraud!” attack on Roxas? I also noticed that Duterte and Roxas did not fluster under attack, due to their years of public service and the callouses that have formed around their sensitivity spot. Binay laughed when under attack, and stormed out at the end, obviously peeved. Poe boiled and seethed when attack, especially when the rules forced her to stop speaking. She seemed on the edge of tears a good part of the time. I would say she almost “lost it”, but that might be interpreted as a pejorative.

      • after the 2nd debate it seemed clear to me who among them laid realistic platforms of government when elected.

        Roxas though struggles to entice the audience presented the most realistic answers to the questions with basis of course even without “notes”.

        Poe appears to be spontaneous but still far from being realistic perhaps due to too much research & reading that hinders her to touch the ground. She likewise lost her poise when she participated and argues like a “street debate” with the boys. Parang tinderang nakipag-away sa kapwa tindera.

        Duterte is still consistent being perceived as the “tough guy”. And obviously, the audience loved his character. According to the on-the-scene tweets from the social networks duterte got the highest number, Of course being a bisaya.

        Binay tried very hard to fend the accusations even bringing along cheering squads just to lift his spirits but to no avail. he’s going to the dogs if not to hell this lenten season. A trapo indeed! Imagine bringing along with him a “waiver” for his bank accounts. LOL!

        The 3rd and final debate will be fought ultimately between Roxas & Poe with Duterte siding her. Just my anticipation.

        • he, he, he, I’m tough guy too. bet, duterte is not sharp shooter, kurog na ang kamay. if given chance and when chance permits, I’d like to shoot him too. give him a taste of his own meds. 1st shot on the leg, see how well he dances the mazurka, then on the hip, see how well he grinds. old man should know that killing gets you killed. it’s statistics.

      • Ganging up on Binay was expected. Binay irritated them from the getgo and he was an easy target anyway. These three wanted to see which way the disgruntled Binay suppoorters would transfer their votes. Binay was the pinata.

        Duterte was expected by Roxas to throw low blow antics. Duterte tried the ‘Fraud’ tag but Roxas was quick to debunked that with facts. Roxas defended and Fraud vs Fact, and Fact won. Roxas saw an opening when Duterte proudly set himself apart by claiming that a president should be willing to kill in order to be effective and Roxas threw two lethal puches that first sucker punch Binay then a straight clean south paw to Duterte’s face when Roxas said,

        ‘ i as a leader wis willing to die and I am also willing ti kill but will respect due process. You killed only petty criminals, can you tell us who were the big time criminals you killed or fought?’

        And Duterte lips were suddenly injected with botox and paralysis set in. Roxas was not intimidated by Duterte and Duterte started to be more careful with Roxas. Duterte wanted to score some points on following up with Poe’s accusation of the unliquidated 90 Billion Yolanda funds, but Roxas was quick to put into context that he was only responsible for 4 Billion which was disbursed by DILG under his watch and proudly claimed that indeed 97 percent was liquidated and 7 percent can’t be until the projects are finished so they can liquidate the balance. Duterte realized his own blunder by accusing the whole 90 Billion under Roxas and Duterte apologized. I appreciate Duterte’s owning to his fault, but a seasoned debater will not concede and let the viewers who some of them are not intelligent enough be confused and think Duterte is still correct. Duterte is not a debater, obviously and showed his impatience and the lack of skills. Duterte was not ready, but he made sure that he amplified his sincerity to offer leadership even of the authoritarian kind. Duterte sticks to his original demeanor, if you like his brand of governance through being a decisive brutal killer, then he is your guy, else he does not care if you don’t vote for him.

        Poe actually borrowed from Hillary’s playbook. Feisty and was cocksure of herself to compensate for her inexperience, which Hullary is not. Poe tried to dominate the floor but Roxas did not allow her and Binay was more focused on her that Poe and Roxas was flicking her like a fly.

        I did not see that Poe almoat loat it. Poe did well on trying to zing and zap her opponents and let them be on the defense, but Binayncountered and the counter punches of Roxas rattled her. Roxas knew what he was doing and considered the Filipino way of being respectful to a woman but with a firm strike of facts and a tone not condescending, Roxas won a lot of points from women too. Women hate women who are bitches, and Poe was a bitch on that debate.

        Roxas was the clear runaway winner!

        • Unfortunately a lot of Filipinos don’t see things the same way. Most are stuck in “people” level of discussions as the debates features about 10% “idea”, 20% “event” and 70% “people” level of discussion, with reference to Eleanor Roosevelt’s quote.

  7. IBP: SC FAILED TO RESOLVE THE HEART OF POE’s CASE

    “In a statement, the IBP board of governors believed that the high tribunal failed to resolve the heart of Poe’s case, which was settling the matter of whether Poe is a natural-born citizen and whether she has met the residency requirement under the law.

    “They said that high court has not resolved the issues involving Poe’s eligibilities as shown in the main decision and various opinions of justices.

    “While the decision appears to have rendered an opinion as to whether Poe is a natural-born as well as whether she has satisfied the 10-year residency requirement for the presidency, it should be emphasized that the DISPOSITIVE PORTION of the decision merely orders the reversal of the decisions of the Commission on Elections granting the petitions to disqualify her… and states that she is qualified to be a candidate for president in the national and local elections on May 9, 2016.” read the one-page statement.

    “It can be concluded that the decision did not.” it stressed.

    “The IBP believes that the SC ruling penned by Justice Jose Perez and approves by a majority of nine justices held that only the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET) can rule on such issues and not the Comelec.

    “For this issue to be finally settled, the decision of the Supreme Court posits that, it is apparently necessary, for the eligibility of Poe to be determined with finality, that she must first win in the May 9 presidential election and someone must file a quo warranto petition against her with the Supreme Court sitting as Presidential Electoral Tribunal, for this tribunal to rule on the matter with authority, with jurisdiction and with finality.” the IBP pointed out.       the DISPOSITIVE PORTION is very IMPORTANT

      in a court/Court’s decision!

      The rule is: ‘Succinctly stated, where there is a conflict between the dispositive portion of the decision and the body thereof, the dispositive portion controls irrespective of what appears in the body of the decision.[22] While the body of the decision, order or resolution might create some ambiguity in the manner the courts reasoning preponderates, it is the dispositive portion thereof that finally invests rights upon the parties, sets conditions for the exercise of those rights, and imposes the corresponding duties or obligations.”

      SC on Poe case – dispositive portion:

      “WHEREFORE, the petition is GRANTED. x x x x x x are hereby ANNULED and SET ASIDE. Petitioner MARY GRACE NATIVIDAD SONORA POE-LLAMANZARES is DECLARED QUALIFIED to be a candidate for President in the National and Local Elections of 9 May 2016. ”

      . . . ‘Granted, Annuled and Set Aside, MARY GRACE NATIVIDED SONORA POE-LLAMANZARES is DECLARED QUALIFIED to be a candidate for President in the National and Local Elections of May 2016.;

      . . . is there Incompleteness? Something missing? A violation of the rule as cited in the Florentino 2006 case mentioned?

        • The main and essential part of the Comelec’s cancellation of poe’s CoC for president was her citizenship and residency issues.

          Poe sought the SC intervention in reversing Comelec ruling which was granted and declared her qualified to run for the presidency (9-6 or 7-5-3?) WITHOUT commenting/ruling on the citizenship and residency issues which the Comelec en banc ruled in her disfavor.

          The issues of foundling and the method of counting her stay in the Philippines will continue to be inconclusive and questionable.

          So, declaring her to be qualified to run is ENOUGH in the dispositive portion. . .

          – there should have been this at the DISPOSITIVE portion – ‘GPL a FOUNDLING is a NATURAL BORN FILIPINO citizen and with at LEAST 10 YEARS of residency in the Philippines based on the facts, laws, International law on being a stateless person, and under all of the Constitutions of 1935, 1973 and 1987 of the Philippines.’

          Dapat siguro ganyan ang DISPOSITIVE portion in the Poe cases by the 7 justices. . . KULANG PA RIN – No MAJORITY of EIGHT as required in the Constitution!
