UP Visayas students barred from grilling Senators Bongbong Marcos and Miriam Santiago during Halalan Forum

While Mar Roxas snubs Metro Manilans

Exclusive

By Raïssa Robles

Just listen. Don’t ask.

red - EXCLUSIVE

Listen. Admire. Applaud. (or they came, they talked, they left)

Ask questions? Forget it.

This Wednesday at the University of the Philippines Visayas, vice presidential candidate and plunder beneficiary Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. appeared with his presidential running mate Miriam Defensor Santiago  to tell students what he and Santiago planned to do if they’re elected to office.

They declined to take any questions from the audience. In fact there was no open forum at all.

This, one school official told me, was upon the request of Santiago.

According to Professor Liah Catedrilla, chief of the UP Visayas information and publications office, “there was no q and a. It was the request of a representative of Miriam Santiago that they will just present (their programs). That’s it.”

Prof. Catedrilla said they granted Santiago’s request because “she’s our alumna [and] we can’t do anything if they ask that.”

When I asked her if students and teachers from the university were among the protesters outside who had heckled Bongbong Marcos when he arrived, Catedrilla said “yes” and added that they were joined by representatives from other groups.

When I asked her whether UP Visayas had given the same accommodation to other tandems, she said that when Senator Grace Poe appeared at the university in the same forum, no such prior request was made and Poe readily answered questions from the audience.

The next scheduled candidate is Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte on April 19. Duterte hasn’t confirmed yet but Senator Alan Peter Cayetano said he’s coming, she said.

Frankly, I find it astonishing that Senator Santiago – who lives and breathes sound bites – would not agree to an open forum.

What happened in UP Visayas was definitely not a forum where ideas are freely exchanged.

I would conclude that Senator Miriam’s representative asked that for Bongbong Marcos who must still be smarting from all the brickbats he got before and during the April 10 vice-presidential debate.

Marcos is trying his mightiest best not to be held accountable for the misdeeds of his family,  which includes himself. No less than the Philippine Supreme Court appointed Bongbong as the “executor” of his father’s estate, which to this day consists of the fruits of the family’s ill-gotten wealth.

To those who are wondering why Senator Santiago paired herself off with the young Marcos, she herself once frankly said that she used to write speeches for the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos. She also worked under the late Benjamin “Kokoy” Romualdez, younger brother of Imelda and uncle of Bongbong.

To read about this, go to Miriam Santiago on love, loss and her home, CYBER PROUST By Jojo G. Silvestre.

* * *

If Senator Miriam Santiago was not running for president, Mar Roxas would be the bottom dweller in this presidential race.

I believe this is because Mar Roxas has failed to address two important issues that many people of Metro Manila are most concerned about – trains and traffic. The third issue  – bullets being found in the luggage of departing airport passengers – has been addressed, but continues to be a wellspring of criticisms against Mar Roxas.

The lack of trains and too much traffic are a constant source of cursing for many, many residents of Metro Manila. And Mar Roxas and his handlers have not adequately answered why Mar Roxas, the former Secretary of the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC), should not be pilloried because there are so very few trains running and the roads are clogged with constant traffic.

Yesterday, Mar Roxas had an event inside Club Filipino. But I have yet to see him go around any urban poor community in Metro Manila shaking hands or doing a whistle stop. Or wooing middle class and rich voters to his side.

The votes for Duterte in Metro Manila, I believe, are protest votes against Roxas’ snub. He could lose the elections to Duterte or Jejomar Binay or Grace Poe mainly because of this. Metro Manila residents still affect the national debate on who deserves the presidency but Mar Roxas doesn’t seem to care.

* * *

Why do I say he “could” lose the elections?

Think of the elections like a horse race around a track. Sometimes, one horse is ahead and sometimes another one noses forward.

The elections are on the last leg of the track and the horses are so close to each other that it’s really, really hard to say who will win next month.

If Roxas wants to win, he would have to do something really drastic and unexpected. He has nothing to lose, anyway, because he already lost in 2010 and people expect him to lose this one yet again.

* * *

I have been often asked who I would vote for in the coming polls.

In all the years I have been a journalist I have never disclosed who I would or actually voted for the position of president and vice-president.

But later, I will disclose some of the names I will vote to the Senate and those I hope will not get re-elected.

* * *

Insofar as the post of mayor of Quezon City is concerned, I am leaving that blank as a protest vote against the incumbent mayor who cannot even collect garbage properly. He is running unopposed.

    Duterte’s speech back in January.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFaRateHL18&feature=youtu.be&t=38m40s

At 38:41-39:05, he also mentions the “amusing” story about the lay minister’s rape in a roomful of cheering fans.

This is not a one-off, slip of the tongue, error in judgement. It’s campaign material.

“The “Harapan ng Bise” debate, which airs live on ABS-CBN this Sunday from 5:30 P.M. to 7:30 p.m., will allow Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, Sen. Chiz Escudero, Camarines Sur 3rd District Rep. Leni Robredo, and Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV to talk about their platforms and stand on important issues. Sens. Gringo Honasan and Bongbong Marcos were also invited but could not make it to the debate due to a scheduling conflict.”

scheduling conflict or they got cold feet at hindi na talaga kaya yong debate? ubos na at wala ng laman ang utak.

debate is better medium dahil it caters to wider audience, at saka, nationwide ang exposure. voters all over the nation and also overseas can see their candidates think on the spot, see how well they present themselves and how good they are at problem solving in they way they answer questions. it will show if candidates are rounded and grounded about affairs of the nation.

what’s so important that honasan and bong marcos must miss the debate? sa opinion ko lang po, dahil alam na kasi ng dalawang ito na hindi sila mananalo, kaya, no point for them to attend anymore.

bong is afraid of being heckled! being 1st sa rigged survey is nothing compared to boos and placards being waved at his face. so humiliating.

If Duterte wins and Bongbong wins, then my premonition is that the big big earthquake that Philvolcs is telling us to prepare for will happen during their term. Japan, Ecuador, …..

Imagine having two walking violations of the ten commandments as leaders. President “thou shalt not kill” and Vice President “thou shalt not steal”! We will get our just compensation for letting them get into power.

In the earthquake’s aftermath, Duterte will be salivating at all the looters he will be forced to shoot. Bongbong will use it to justify martial law to restore order. It will be the end of this country as we know it.

And I lay the blame on the x% of Filipinos who are willing to look the other way just so that “criminals will have their day” and that “traffic may be solved” and “poverty to disappear (as if it was possible)”

Duterte has started corrupting the Catholic hierarchy as well:

    D E S T I N Y .  .  .

Whenever a president is elected, the expected conclusion is that he or she is elected because of D E S T I N Y…

If indeed it is their D E S T I N Y, then what about us citizens? What is our destiny?

Let me humor you believers of destiny…

If Binay is destined to be our next president, then the Filipinos are destined to be plundered twice by the same robber!

If Duterte is destined to be our next president, then the Filipinos are destined  to be under an authoritarian ruler twice!

If Poe is destined to be our next president, then the Filipinos are desitined to be occupied and ruled by the Americans twice!

If Roxas is destined to be our next president, then the  Filipinos are destined to try to take the road less traveled twice!

    ***

Filipinos are educated people. But when it comes to history we failed and still failing  miserably. Why? Because we never learn from our mistakes and don’t follow up on our successes.

We know how Marcos brought misery to our country, yet we forget our history and risking everything we gained from ousting the dictator by entertaining to elect Duterte, who promised that he will be one. We are not only a nation of amnesiacs but we are a nation of fools to be even entertaining to elect the son of the dictator Marcos as VP!

We know that Poe did not follow the law and blatantly dishonest in her residency requirement, yet we are condoning her lies because we think being the adopted daughter of FPJ is enough excuse to treat our constitution as trash! Are we a nation of spineless morons who will entrust her of upholding the constitution which she deliberately mocked and trashed?

We know that Binay is corrupt and guilty of ill-gotten wealth, yet we are entertaining to elect him for the reason that among the plunderers Binay is generous enough to share with us some crumbs from his stolen wealth? Are we like the majority of Ilokanos who admit that Marcos was a thief yet they see him as their hero because he poured projects and shared his loot in Ilocandia?

I am a dreamer and a believer that we Filipinos are not a hopeless bunch. I still believe that there will come a time that we wise up, become responsible, and show a semblance of  control of our destiny. I hope that time is now…

Vote for our nation’s interest first! Vote for the greater good!

I would like to invite you to join me in my journey to find our destiny by taking the road less traveled…

Why did respectable Philstar columnist Babe Romualdez ask: The Duterte bandwagon: Is it unstoppable?

“It would seem that anywhere we go – carpenters, waiters, plumbers, taxi drivers, maids, OFWs and a lot of office workers – they all say the same thing “Duterte ako.” The dramatic rise in popularity of Mayor Duterte is simply phenomenal. A polls expert told me Joseph Estrada’s political career was remarkable, with Erap having a strong following from the CDE classes, but very little from the AB sector. With Duterte – he seems to have all classes. He’s beginning to be the political version of the AIDub phenomenon – mobbed almost anywhere he goes. Case in point: He was in a Makati building the other day and literally all the office workers came out to cheer him. I have never seen anything like it.

“A well-written article by political science professor Richard Heydarian which was published in The Huffington Post pointed out that the Davao mayor’s phenomenal rise in popularity is fueled by “grievance politics,” with “democratic fatigue” setting in. “Filipinos have been promised freedom, prosperity and peace” – but 30 years after EDSA, these have remained largely unattained, with poverty and underemployment rates continuing to be high, and systematic corruption persisting on all levels of government.

“The article noted that the country’s “cacique democracy” has made it difficult for people to feel the effects of recent economic inroads, as newly created wealth has not trickled down and farmers have yet to see the fulfillment of promises that they will have their own land. The article quotes Joe Studwell in How Asia Works, who wrote: “Nowhere in Asia has produced more plans for land reform than the Philippines. But equally no ruling elite in Asia has come up with as many ways to avoid implementing genuine land reform..” (both President Aquino and Mar Roxas come from landed wealthy families)

“The post-Marcos Philippines has been hobbled by a toxic combination of sheer incompetence, cynical neglect, and chronic corruption. And this has paved the way for strongman figures to regain momentum.” Heydarian wrote, which partly explains why more and more voters are tilting toward Rodrigo Duterte whom they see as someone “out-of-the-box,” representing the radical change they yearn for.

“In other words, people are not happy with the current state of affairs. And it’s not just ordinary Filipinos that are drawn to Duterte. Young millennial Jan Albert, whose article was also featured in the Huffington Post, started off by saying he made his decision while sitting in “a horrendous EDSA traffic.” While the rich can move around with little difficulty, ordinary commuters rely on the mass public transport that is inadequate. The young millennial says that he always makes an effort to vote with his head and not with his heart but this time, his heart and head are in complete sync – he is voting for Duterte because he is “the most progressive presidential candidate that the country has ever had.”

“Duterte connects with everyone – old and young equalists who dream of a free and equal society, men and women, the middle class, the idealists and pragmatists, like no other politicians could.” Both Heydarian and Suing articles reflect the growing impatience of Filipinos in a country where “a small oligarchy has been dominating the country’s political and economic landscape for more than a century.

Obviously, Duterte’s call for change is reverberating. For some people, it is a welcome change; for others it is a scary change. Nevertheless, Duterte’s bandwagon seems to be on a roll. All his opponents’ guns are now pointed at him. He can expect more to come his way.

In all my years observing elections in this country, I have seen candidates who covet, even lust for the presidency – planning for it and working hard for it – but if it was not meant to be, it will not happen. “The presidency is a matter of destiny,” is what I always say.

Is Duterte destined to be the president of our country? We will soon find out.

Good morning sir @JL but I’m not convince that Duterte will jail Binay. Remember he mentioned before that if he will be disqualified he will endorse Binay instead of Roxas as prez. Also, he mentioned also that he will run as prez because he doesn’t want an American Grace to be prez, now he is saying he is willing to support Grace when she offered him Crime Czar if she wins presidency. Kakatakot, pabago bago ng isip. Walang clear principle at vision.

          April 17, 2016 at 10:12 PM

You’re right. He says so many different proposals for same topics. Last week he said he would jail Binay alongside his statement to Binay that he should kneel and pray for his entire family not to be imprisoned.

I still say though that the third debate will make or break him as well as his ability to stay away from saying dirty or insulting words to others. His handlers should duct tape in his mouth if they want him to win. With his recent backlash from women and decent families about his statement on a raped woman, his numbers should go down. Unbelievable would be honest and dignified Duterte voters who did not flinch on this recent disclosure about his character.

His admirers should start thinking this way : “am I really serious in voting for this guy with his sole promise to keep the nation safe despite his congenital sickness to insult women which in return will damage the reputation of my beloved country? He has dangerous uncontrolled impromptu language which could not be tempered in front of irresistible women. Imagine if Melania Trump is showing her cleavage in front of him in a State Dinner, how would he react, eyes, body and oral cavity with his congenital illness? Disaster to the Philippines!

Similarly I don’t think Poe was sincere in offering Duterte crime czar position. It was knee jerk response for Grace from Digong’s offer of Tourism Portfolio to Grace. It’s politics. With the recent debacle of Duterte, Poe might resurge with her numbers.

Roxas should seize the moment to attack Duterte if he wants to gain voters from him. He should not be mincing words and surround himself with women, teenage children or families with religious background and ask the audience this? Are you the kind of admirers who will vote for Duterte who disrespect women, children and families with his character? If he succeeds the 2 Horses race might be PoRo and RoRo instead of DuRo.

I wonder why the defenders of Duterte were slow in reacting to this video showing their “revered” leader speaking these unethical words.

Is it because there is now a battle of conscious and unconscious minds about the kind of leader they are espousing? Or moral bankruptcy is the order of the day and they will defend their leader come what may.

        Let’s see…. let’s see…

A saying comes to mind, “Tell me who your friends are and I’ll tell you who you are.”

This could mean, “Tell me what morals you defend and I’ll tell you how you stand on issues that will affect your humanity.”

Some are downplaying the vulgarity as an innocent joke done in poor taste.
Some are saying that the only people offended by the video are oversensitive PC feminists.
Some are even rallying behind this video. They’re saying that this is how “real men” talk.

He could open fire at the crowd in one of his rallies and his supporters would find a way to justify his actions.

    Perception

President and Vice-President for another six (6) years (‘long’ to some, ‘short’ to others) is waiting to be had.

It’s the so-called Six-year Switch (aka change) that was recently hatched as a result of ‘agua de pataranta‘ care of the drinking buddies.

The coming, anticipated Six-year Switch (aka change) was brought about by Six-or-less Itch to change the kind of government we had (‘as a whole‘) in the last six years.

It is time to switch (aka change)…most national (and possibly, local) candidates proffered. Who among them, in your perception, offers as a menu the Six-year Switch (aka change)?

If you’ve already decided on who you’re going to s/elect in your perception on what had happened in the last six years, please better consider because the newbies in the Presidential and Vice-Presidential races are out to offer the perceived much-to-be-desired, necessary, pivotal RADICAL CHANGE in their so-called ‘Six-year Switch as the leader’ agenda.

Awkward! Prayers for Marcos at Duterte-Cayetano rally
    http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/779868/awkward-prayers-for-marcos-at-duterte-cayetano-rally

    Comment:
    Eugenio Demigillo

“in the later years of Marcos’s rule, the banks of his leading cronies funded a quarter to a half of their assets with central bank money…. Marcos himself used central bank – guaranteed foreign loans to buy Manhattan real estate. (Quoted from Hutchcroft, Booty Capitalism, p.164 – 5). As a murderous financial crisis brewed in the Philippines in the early 1980s, the central bank did ever more rediscounting – pumping money into the economy – because it was the only way to keep the financial system afloat….Marcos instituted a repayment moratorium in Oct. 1983. However, this only caused capital flight to accelerate,… Printing money became the only form of finance left….The inflation rate was 50 per cent in1984, and the currency sliid from 7.5 pesos to the dollar in 1980 to 20 in 1986….In Feb. 1986, amid large – scale protests, Marcos fled on a US government airplane, at the zenith of a cirsis in which the Philippine economy shrank by a quarter.” (How Asia Works, Joe Studwell, pp. 158 – 159). ”

ang hina naman ni cayetano, him being stoic kuno. instead of thinking inward, he could have thought outward and project himself to all present. perfect setting yon, the crowd was already there and all cayetano had to do is sieze the moment and expound why he is the better man than bong marcos. start with a joke or a song and do the mazurka, then go for the diatribe he is best known for, no holds barred. laugh it off, then say, bong since you are up there and I’m down here, how about this cayetano cat will play while the marcos mouse is away? laugh again, then start engaging those present. cayetano has quick wit and quicker tongue, why mothball them?

cayetano should not have demured. sad talaga, he has ammunitions pero ayaw gamitin. election time is pintakasi time, rat, tat, tat, tat, tat . . . shoot, shoot, shoot. talk, talk, talk. talk his way in and show dirty dutz and all those present that he, cayetano, really is the better choice than bong marcos. their party will have a good run for their money, cayetano equal to the task.

cayetano’s reluctance will cost him votes. and duterte’s unwillingness to defend ang katambal will cause cayetano to lose even more votes.

Agree. Oftentimes, it appears that Duterte is not solidly behind his running mate. Alan Cayetano is a very good attack dog if you remember him bashing Noynoy in 2010. Now, Cayetano trained his guns against Bongbong as evident in the last debate. So far ay alam kong nakakaramdam na yang si Cayetano nang laglagan aminin man niya o hindi. Dedepensahan lang siya ni Duterte kapag may kahiya-hiyang sitwasyon pero kung wala ay kinukulang sa ayuda.

In the next revolutionary government. . . all corrupts and diktadors atpba (public or private) individuals should be tried and convicted ASAP. . . present or in absentia. . .if not dead, EXILE forever! (A mistake during Pres. Cory’s time).

In our PREAMBLE of the Consti. it mumbles – “x x x under the rule of law and a regime of truth, justice, freedom, love, equality, and peace, ”

A die-hard feeling of ‘love’ for the die-hard criminals, corrupts and dictators. Who insisted on putting that word ‘love?’ Alam muna!

Re-phrase it like this “. . . under a regime of truth, stern justice, freedom, love but with deep public anger to those without it, equality, and peace.”

From that a revolutionary or regular court can do this – ‘Sentence is hereby imposed . . . death or Exile, at the discretion of the court.”

      sana ma re-phrase ‘to.

Tuwid na daan is a legacy we want to perpetuate and not a martial law attitude. it is only with roxas robredo that an IMPROVED TUWID NA DAAN can happen.
TUWID NA DAAN I is okay because of KKK (kaiskwela, kaalyado at kaibigan were not in the plan). TUWID NA DAAN II under RORO will be better because of 4K’s (kurakots, kutongeros, at kuraptors, kahit sino ay included on the plan).

She is now embedded in the national consciousness considering also her vital work for the masses albeit in a local level status.
