I will be speaking in New York, Washington DC and Seattle about Marcos’ Martial Law and President Duterte

Dear Guys,

My book tour schedule in the United States has been quite hectic, thanks to Filipino-Americans who organized it.

Everywhere I go, I have only met kindness and generosity, except for that one instance when a loud woman tried to hijack my talk at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA). More on her later.

♦  ♦  ♦  ♦

Tomorrow Thursday evening (New York time), I will be joining three other Asian writers in discussing various aspects of SPEAKING TRUTH TO POWER: CONFRONTING AUTHORITARIAN REGIMES.

You can know more about it by clicking this link.

♦  ♦  ♦  ♦

This Friday October 20 (NY time), I will be talking to the Fil-Am Press Club of New York to discuss – Martial Law and the Reemergence of Authoritarianism in the Philippines. It will be held at the Church of St. Francis of Assisi (my favorite saint, by the way) at 135 W 31st St. in New York.

The public is invited.

However, I will not countenance anyone who tries to hijack my talk the way this loud, brassy and totally obnoxious woman tried to do in UCLA.

I am all for freedom of speech and assembly.

But she was demanding to know why I did not talk about jailed Senator Leiila de Lima.Well, for the simple reason that De Lima was not the topic of my talk.

I think she wanted to be THE SPEAKER, instead of me.

My advice to her – write a letter to UCLA and ask to be invited. Then you can talk your head off. At one point, I told her – I’m the guest speaker here, not you.

I also did not understand why she refused to tell me her REAL NAME. I mean, if you say I’m lying, the least you should do is tell me who you are. I have the right to know who is accusing me of lying, you know.

My conclusion is, perhaps Maharlika is afraid. Are your papers all in order with immigration, Maharlika? Or are you a coward?

Also, Maharlika, stop using sweeping generalizations. You say I am lying. Be specific. Show me the paragraph and page in my book where I lied. And prove that I lied.

Unfortunately for you, the others who came to my talk congratulated me afterward, which means they believed me. The so-called supalpal is all in your mind.

And unfortunately for the students, you robbed them of the time that was supposed to be theirs for asking questions and clarifying things.

♦  ♦  ♦  ♦

This Saturday October 21, well-known and multi-awarded author Ninotchka Rosca invited me to the AF3IRM National Conference in New York to be one of the speakers. The chosen topic for me – “Women and Duterte”.

I told Ninotchka, you sure want  to get me into trouble. But I took up the challenge. This should prove to be interesting.

♦  ♦  ♦  ♦

On Monday October 23, New York University and the International Center for Transitional Justice is hosting my talk on “Human Rights in the Philippines – How the Marcos Dictatorship made Duterte happen”.

The discussants will be Dr. Jerome Whittington of NYU’s Department of Anthropology and Ruben Carranza of the International Center for Transitional Justice.

You can get more details by clicking here.

Phelim Kine @PhelimKine, deputy director of the Asia Division of Human Rights Watch, said he would be coming to my talk.

♦  ♦  ♦  ♦

Then, it’s off to Washington where I will meet with the Fil-Am Community in the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, the Fil-Am community in Washington DC, and possibly professors and students at Georgetown University.

But more on that later.

Who put together my talks?

My talks would not have been at all possible if I had not been invited by the Philippine American Writers and Artists, Inc. to join the Filipino-American International Book Festival by Edwin Lozada, Director of the just-concluded Filipino American International Book Festival and President of PAWA.

Among those who arranged my talks are the following people: Author Mila de Guzman, who recently wrote the book Women Against Marcos, Stories of Filipino and Filipino American Women Who Fought A Dictator.  Leni Marin, former senior Vice-President of the Asian Pacific Institute on Gender-Based Violence. Edwin Batongbakal who arranged all my travels. (I believe he was a batchmate of ex-Senator Bongbong Marcos, Jr. in school once.); Rene Ciria Cruz who writes for the Philippine Daily Inquirer, and Lorenzo Listana.

In each city that I went to, more people took care of me and the logistics. I will disclose their names later. But let me just say that this is one instance where the kindness of strangers matter.

Finally, I would like to thank my publisher, Filipinos for a Better Philippines. Its board, consisting mainly of Ateneo de Manila University graduates, provided the books for my book tour. And of course my hubby, Alan, my book editor who has been manning the fort while I’m out.

Their motive?

All, without exception,  are deeply concerned with what is happening in the Philippines.

♦  ♦  ♦  ♦

As for those who accuse me of treason, rebellion and of destroying the country’s image abroad, Duterte is NOT the country. His policies and pronouncements can be the subject of critical comments, which is part of a vigorous democracy.

To you, it’s OK to criticise the previous administration especially with regard to the tragedy that befell the SAF 44, which made the country’s image abroad suffer. Or the bus hostage taking crisis in 2010 which affected the country’s image, too. But suddenly it’s not OK to do the same with Duterte’s questionable policies on his “war on drugs” or moves to replace the present Philippine Constitution?

    Mr. Randy David:

‘At his speech in the recent Apec Summit in Da Nang, Vietnam, President Duterte lamented the unabated flow of skilled Filipino workers to destinations abroad, and called upon the receiving countries to redress this loss by helping the country to develop its economic capacity. ‘

‘It is a touching message but, unfortunately, it carries no weight given that it is the Philippine government itself that institutionalized the whole process.’

‘The reality is that since Marcos, every administration in this country has knowingly acted as the principal merchant of Filipino labor in the global labor market.’

Unabated flow. Our government itself causes this in
    every administration.

Why, among many reasons? Failure in the
    drive against corruption in government
    and society.

Do we see as many Europeans in unabated
    flow to other countries?

Do we see as many American workers
going to other countries? Russian workers?

Corruption is one cause. We are still a
poor country. If corruption is unabated
the flow of our Filipino workers abroad
    will continue without end.

    The fire of corruption here
    continues to burn unabated.

If we can only really do a lot
to put a stop to corruption
    though impossible to completely
do it, the chain reaction of this
    burning corruption will help
    a lot more.

    Action is needed. Prayers
    are needed. Love of country
    needed. Honesty needed.
    Patriotism too. What else?

    Tell us.

“It is pointless to blame globalization and advances in technology for humanity’s problems. These are integral aspects of society’s evolution into more complex forms.”
I have a problem with this statement because simply put, globalization is just a form of global unity, a direct defiance of what has God did during the building of the Tower of Babel when He confused the language of people to prevent unity. When global unity is achieved (sounds ideal), ultimately the goal would be to elect a leader and that leader is non other than the Antichrist that was prophesied.
Globalization will ultimately be achieved in the end though, I just want people to be aware of this.

hindi naman umatend ng gala dinner sa vietnam ang ating mahal na pangulo. sayang magkatabi sana sila ng U.S.A. pres.

unang international twit at ipinost ni presidential spokesperson sa kanyang fb ay MALI na kaagad.

Presidential Spokesman Roque calls IMF chief ‘Agnes Legarda’ in tweet
The real name of the International Monetary Fund chief is Christine Lagarde

super excited si atty roque sa kanyang first international conference bilang spokesperson ng presidente.

sabi ni dfa sec cayetano: the president wanted to rest early due to his early schedule for the APEC leaders’ retreat Saturday.

sabi ng presidential spokesperson posted on his fb: “The President was not able to attend the gala dinner because of two things: 1. He is attending to urgent ASEAN hosting matters; 2. He is supervising and coordinating safe recovery of Vietnamese captives of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG),” Roque said.

sino ba ang tama: cayetano or roque or non of the two?

twice digong failed to get the coveted seat! last year’s 2016 summit in indonesia, sinabi ring digong will be seated between obama and ban ki moon, pero hindi nangyari, bigo si digong. tapos, this year’s apec in vietnam, bigo na naman uli si digong. he did not get the coveted seat next to trump, kaya siguro, nag-absent kaagad si digong and did not attend gala diner, saved himself the shame, he, he, he.

and now, ito na naman, digong to have meeting with trump in vietnam, pero bigo rin, at walang meeting na nangyari. nagmamakaimportante ang mga gonggong, he, he, he.

digong attending to urgent asean matters? yeah right, that’s why they got the spelling wrong sa tarpaulin: ang philippines ay naging philppines. buti pa yong grade 5, alam ang spelling na ang philippines ay may tatlong ‘i’ at tatlong ‘p’.

methink, cayetano and harrieta are just making excuses dahil digong is nowhere near trump, he, he, he, digong would have to clamber over china’s president, the vietnamese president, as well as australian prime minister and japan’s abe just to be seated next to trump.

at apec, delegates hardly talk to digong! he is like a pariah, friendless at walang kausap. kaya, digong talks mostly to ofws and have forums with them, hastily constructed. ofws are eager to hear digong, clapping and smiling and making him happy. make him feel important too. he, he, he.

New blood: Liberal Party welcomes ‘non-politicians’ into fold. sila ay galing sa academe, youth, professionals, and non-government organizations. itong bagong dugo ng LP go against the strong, if not very strong du30 flow current.

    excerpt from rappler:

Party chairperson Vice President Leni Robredo administered the oath.

“We know that often, people go with the flow, but you go against the flow,” said Robredo in a speech during the oath taking, according to a press release from the LP.

“We salute you because you are not afraid to be called yellow, because you know that these are the times that almost no one wants to join the party because we are always attacked and made to look bad in the eyes of the public. But you believe and trust that this is the party with firm principles,” added Robredo, a relative neophyte in Philippine politics.

congratulations and good luck to all lp new blood.

We are seeing some purging, arrests and deals from punishments due to massive corruption , mass killings, economy $$$ AND SEX from the inside of Washington to the richest princess , royals of the oil countries , that powerful men and women push for war to escape accountability. Very twisted people to want war.

And POTUS is not riding on it, he is in fact trying to stop it for he is for the world. Ironic the kind of world he is fighting for,,,, very freaky.
Some parties even in the PH are fed by agendas and fake news for they do not know the what, why and how.

The PH LEADERS and politicians must be feeling the change, they aren’t immune from these creepy purging that is now happening.
Senator Trillanes is a wonder, the oddest senator that strikes. Please keep on going, soldier!

Having Sen. DE LIMA is a gift for women fighters. It’s just sad that no one among her colleagues outside of her party is stepping out to recognized her importance.

A thousand a day allowance for the drug queen’s daughter security while security for Delima is almost nonexistent that even International visitors are not allowed to see whether she is given her basic protection and necessities as a sitting senator is making a loud statement loud and clear of the human rights abuses in the country, while the rest and poorest of the poor are also just dying and getting sicker inside the jail. Never mind them , mahirap lang sila eh! WOW ! feel na feel ko yan and the OFWS felt wealthy and changed status /thinking / riding the bandwagon of the moneyed drug lords… pity they’ve been duped that they voted for the poor.

Thanks to Rappler as “bloggers news’ and not a mouthpiece of the place of evil and of course to people actively engaging for the truth in social media.

if I was sereno, I’d do the same and sack the two. why release only her test results? to be fair, dapat lahat na results ng mga applicants were released.

prerogative ni ex pres aquino to choose the chief justice, pero those two went under the table and tried to highjack aquino’s decision. bad move by the two, trying to countermand the sitting president. badder still that those two were to serve under sereno, they should have been nice to their new boss instead of bringing her down the 1st chance they’ve got. or they could have resigned dahil they disagree with sereno’s appointment, and then, release her test result.

now, para tuloy naghihigante yong dalawang dahil nawalan ng trabaho, they lost their status, their pride hurt and their ego in doldrums. and for all that, ilalaglag nila si sereno. cant get better job baga, hard to find jobs as psychiatrists, for who would trust them now if they cant adhere to privacy and confidentiality of their client?

I dont think sereno should resign. she should let justice take its course and see it to the end. ipaglaban ang office niya. she has guts! reason enough for ex pres aquino to choose her.

roque is bluffing, he, he, he, throwing the proverbial hollow blocks at sereno and asking her to resign, save the judiciary from further ado kuno. well, if roque wants the judiciary saved from further ado, he should also throw proverbial hollow blocks at gadon. stop the in fighting! stop tearing the judiciary apart!

but once the rend is done, the judiciary should have a clean break. and that is what sereno is doing.

        • arc says

          November 8, 2017 at 10:31 AM

once it was aptitude test, now it’s psyche test. it’s a way of finding if a person is the right one for the job, has the right personality, collegiate, able to perform under pressure, can work with a team, does not profess to be perfect but admit that there is always room for improvement, fast learner, etc.

psyche test is not fool proof. rapists and killers have been freed and allowed back to society mainly because they ticked all the boxes, with both psychologists and psychiatrists saying they’ve reformed and can integrate back to society. there are lapses of course and society suffered greatly for it. rapists and killers on bail have been known to re-offend.

at work, failing a psyche test means you’re probly not the right person for the job, would not be able to fit in and can be a bit of a problem to others. though there are employers that took on those that failed because they probly see the potential and took the risk.

he, he, he, I failed a psyche test once and not admitted to the army.

socios or psychopaths usually have past histories and come under different jurisdiction.

    ——————————————————————-
Incoming Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque plans to tap a good-looking and smooth-talking “millennial” as his deputy spokesman.
    ———————————————————————————————-

The old man has Mocha, now the spokeman will have a good looking smooth talker guy.

Take note “GUY” and according to Roque, this will make the ladies fall for the guy. Hindi kaya siya mag selos?

Feeling ko parang tuloy dating office ang palasyo ngayon.

sam, I can understand roque’s need to free himself from the mundane and the nitty gritty. gaya ng centerlaw, t’was created to free up roque so he can enjoy other pursuits, he, he, he. centerlaw allow other lawyers to take up and do when roque feels lazy to do anything; sort of roque delegating those boring and repetitious jobs to others while at the same time, enjoying the credit and the plaudits of having founded centerlaw.

tapos, ito na naman, roque having to deputize the job of presidential spokesman on days he is not available kuno, delegating uli. nasanay na si roque to ‘passing the buck’.

considering na menopausal na si harrieta, the deputy is going to be overworked, taking up most of the job and holding the fort while harrieta is having tantrum and screaming at everything and nothing.

and boring jobs delegation, dont want to take up and do. and for other lawyers take up the cudgel

‘However, a revolutionary government can be put in place by Duterte even without declaring Martial Law.

All he needs to do is get Congress to back him up and approve a resolution by three-fourths vote to put up a revolutionary government.

At this time, I believe the President can easily gather 3/4 of the vote in the House of Representatives. I am not sure, though, if he has 3/4 or 18 votes in the Senate.
    http://news.abs-cbn.com/blogs/opinions/10/30/17/opinion-how-could-martial-law-happen

    A revolutionary government by
    a Congressional resolution is
    blatantly illegal. It is never
    in the 1987 Constitution.

It is void ab initio. Beyond
    Congress’ power to resolve.

    Where then is a revolutionary
    government’s basis?

    None.

    Without the sovereign people
expressly doing such a thing, it is
    illegal. Unlawful. Immoral.

    Coercive silence by the
people is not an approval to
    legitimize such an illegal
    government. Congress cannot
legally represent the people on this
    by a resolution.

    Reason: the 1987 Constitution –
    ‘PREAMBLE –

We, the sovereign Filipino people, imploring the aid of Almighty God, in order to build a just and humane society and establish a Government that shall embody our ideals and aspirations, promote the common good, conserve and develop our patrimony, and secure to ourselves and our posterity the blessings of independence and democracy under the rule of law and a regime of truth, justice, freedom, love, equality, and peace, do ordain and promulgate this Constitution.’
