Can UP fight a school that has a statue and a building dedicated to a basketball player?
By Raïssa Robles
Yes, I am waiting for 3:30 PM today.
No, I am not going to the basketball arena to watch the game live.
But I am breaking off for a while from finishing a deadline to watch the game on TV. With popcorn. And lots of hope that maybe, just maybe, my alma mater University of the Philippines, will win over Ateneo de Manila University.
I have totally mixed feelings about this.
My best friend studied in Ateneo and she got me to join a special English class there run by Fr. Joseph Galdon. I am very grateful to Fr. G for letting me sit in his class for free for two years, and then giving me one-on-one tutorials on writing, especially on letting go when speaking out the truth.
It is true what one fellow on Twitter said—that this game is a match between best friends. Accidentally pitted against each other in friendly rivalry.
Seriously, Ateneo is better prepared for basketball games. While we have a statue of the late actor Fernando Poe, Sr. posing as the naked man selfless in his sacrifice, Ateneo has a statue of one of its late basketball players, Moro Lorenzo. His family dedicated a beautiful gym and fitness center with an indoor turf for running, a clinic and basketball court.
How about UP? Well, we have a scrappy team right now who does not know when to give up.
#AtinTo, said the UP coach UP Maroons team member Paul Desiderio.
Curiously, #AtinTo includes even Ateneo. And the entire Philippines (minus those tiresome trolls, of course). In fact, the student councils of both universities have put out a call for students to attend the match wearing black shirts—to protest the “violence, impunity and misogyny” in our country today.
Although many students from both schools come from different economic backgrounds, there exists a long history of cross-pollination of ideas between the two schools along Katipunan Avenue.
Come to think of it, the street bordering both universities is aptly named “Katipunan”. Both schools have contributed martyrs to the fight against the Marcos dictatorship. Unfortunately, they have also contributed personalities who have set back democracy—UP has Ferdinand Marcos. Ateneo has Joseph Estrada.
Speaking of cross-pollination, I was amused to read that the UP basketball coach Bo Perasol was praying to God for victory. UP has long been known for producing agnostics.
However, a half century ago, Ateneo was able to inject a measure of Christianity in this sectarian school by sending over Fr. John Delaney. The Jesuit, true to his calling, lost no time in building the Church of the Holy Sacrifice.
Ingeniously, Fr. Delaney commissioned four budding Philippine artists who are now renowned for their craft:
- Architect Leandro Locsin—for the flying saucer-shaped building;
- Sculptor Napolen Abueva for the dying and risen Christ on the cross above the main altar;
- Painter Vicente Manansala for the stations of the cross murals;
- Mixed visual artist Arturo Luz for the marble floor depicting the “river of life”.
Today, the Church is a monument to the friendship forged between the two schools and an understanding that both religion and agnosticism can co-exist together.
However, repression of freedoms and human rights are to be fought together. This is the contribution of UP, which penetrated Ateneo with radical political ideas. For example, when Philippine Military Academy graduate Dante Simbulan went to UP, he not only finished an MA there. He also got exposed to what he called “liberal-progressive” ideas.
In turn, Simbulan inspired the young lieutenant Victor Corpus to break away and join the communist New People’s Army. When Simbulan was kicked out of his PMA teaching post, Ateneo welcomed him as a lecturer. In my interview with Simbulan in Virginia last year, Simbulan narrated to me that one of his students in Ateneo was student leader Edgar Jopson.
Jopson, who started out as a political moderate, was forced to go underground during Martial Law. Jopson was killed by a Philippine Constabulary team led by Colonel Nelson Estares, who was later promoted to general.
Now this is where it gets to be quite interesting. After Marcos’ ouster, Colonel Estares became one of the key military officials who helped then Mayor Rodrigo Duterte run after criminals and communists.
Last year, Duterte appointed the now-retired General Estares to the post of Undersecretary in the Office of the President. Duterte gave Estares the same mission as before.
So, the political situation has come full circle.
Hence, this post by the Ateneo Student Council:

Will our Intelligence Community be infiltrated by China through ZTE & HUAWEI via Mislatel?
“The US intelligence community has long been wary of Huawei, which was founded by a former engineer in China’s People’s Liberation Army and has been described by US politicians as “effectively an arm of the Chinese government.” Our own DILG already signed a ‘contract’ with HUAWEI to keep Filipinos safe.
What is ‘safe’ here and there? That is a big question.Hwag wei muna! Baka ma huwag tayo.

Huawei was pretty notorious in recent years for industrial espionage, however. Since 2003, the company has been accused of stealing trade secrets from Cisco, Motorola and T-Mobile, resulting in a flurry of lawsuits and settlements. Huawei and ZTE have even accused each other of stealing secrets.
Notorious.

A jury decided that Huawei misappropriated trade secrets belonging to T-Mobile in a series of incidents that occurred in 2012 and 2013.
The lawsuit, filed by T-Mobile in 2014, claimed that two Huawei Device USA employees spied on a smartphone-testing robot T-Mobile had in its Bellevue lab. The robot, Tappy, was developed to test smartphone functions with fast-moving, humanlike fingers. Huawei was then a smartphone supplier to T-Mobile. On a visit to the lab, the employees photographed the robot and one slipped one of Tappy’s fingertips into his bag, T-Mobile claimed.

with huawei’s facial recognition, people will invent ways to fool the system, wear disguise like wigs or wear head to toe jihab only their eyes show. have plastic surgeries to change the look of their faces, wear elevator shoes to disguise height. and yet with spatial recognition, the system will be able to pick one out from the crowd by the way one walks, by one’s mannerisms, and the way one carries itself. and some stupidly have tattos that make them stand out from the crowd and easy to pick from a line up.

The important very sensitive thing HUAWEI is into:
. . . Chinese rules requiring telecom equipment suppliers to cooperate with intelligence services would involve possible “mandatory backdoors” in computer or telecom systems.
It might be so far true that no concrete proof exists against HUAWEI but this company has not denied or cannot deny that it has to follow China’s RULE to cooperate with Intelligence Services as it is a State-supported telecom entity.

espionage and commerce, methink, that’s what huawei is all about, is china all about.
years ago, I recall reading apples stores being opened in china, selling exclusively apples products. the stores all too ultra modern, the staff best and brightest, chosen for their looks, knowledge and exuberance.
turned out apple inc. has not given permission for china to open apple stores, and those supposedly apple products are chinese imitation, all fakes and inferior pa! I think, that’s how huawei got in the market, and apple was bested to 3rd place na lang. apples’ status literally destroyed.

I call this a trick. The same dangerous alternative. Two proposed Charter change: One by the Consultative Committee. And the One proposed lately by the Lower House under Spkr Arroyo.
Both proposed changes are still filled up with objectionables. The TRICK is to adopt the One by the Consultative Committee headed by Ex-CJ Puno. The objections to this were already manifested by so many. Now, the Ex-CJ Puno objects to the proposal by the Lower House. In short, the message is to GO for the FIRST ONE by the Consul.Cmttee thereby rejecting the ONE by the LH.
Both ONE and ONE should be rejected by the voters because the changes are ONE-Trick in all.
Either ONE and ONE is not good as against the 1987 Constitution framework. In either ONE there will be an imperial Philippines. . . not a democracy but a IMPERIALCRACY
One noted objection:

The country is and will be at the threshold of a difficult irreversible bad situation when the DETAILS of these proposed changes are publicly realized by the voters.
Same objection – reject both.

Let’s listen, read and talk about the 2019 BUDGET.
House members ANGRY. Why? Because SOMEONE that is the SECRETARY inserted
huge amounts. So, why angry? Because the insertions were awarded to a bala-i
CONTRACTOR.
So, why still angry? Because the SECRET was to GRAB the grabbing from the lower house members.
But why angry? Because any insertions must be done only by lawmakers and not anybody else.
Explanation by SECRET one: It is not insertion. It is ADDITION. Still not satisfied, lower House says: Resign!
Taxpayers’ money is subjected, this time, to INSERTIONS not ADDITIONS. Does it constitutes unconstitutional RE-ALIGNMENT per SC decision making it illegal?
Once the proposed BUDGET 2019 is approved, another SC case awaits to rule whether INSERTION or ADDITION is in violation of the Constitution.
Corruption is really everywhere.

Two Sandiganbayan justices believe Revilla is guilty of plunder
Sandiganbayan 1st Division Chairperson Efren De La Cruz and Associate Justice Maria Theresa Dolores Gomez-Estoesta believe that bong revilla is guilty of plunder abd should have shared the fate of janet napoles and richard cambe
In the dissenting opinions of Gomez-Estoesta and Dela Cruz, it was pointed out that Revilla should not have been acquitted as he conspired with Napoles and Cambe in an intricate scheme of diverting funds from his PDAF through the NGOs of Napoles.
Dela Cruz, who was the only justice in the 1st Division who saw the start and end of the Revilla plunder trial, stressed that Cambe could not have acted on his own
“Revilla’s designation of Cambe as his authorized representative further proves the prosecution’s contention that Cambe operated under Revilla’s authority, and Revilla was all over the scam scene, although he remained in the shadow.” Dela Cruz said
Gomez-Estoesta also pointed out that courts should be able to detect conspiracy among the accused
“Conspiracy only thrives in secrecy. The PDAF scheme would have gone undetected, absent any positive act to admit to its commission, had it not been detected for the miscalculated slip committed by the grand designer which cut loose one tongue, then another, until all there is to know had been revealed.” Gomez-Estoesta said
While she conceded that the testimonies of whistle blowers Benhur Luy and Merlina Sunas are “not potent” to establish that Revilla authorized Cambe, the other pieces of evidence will prove that Revilla greatly benefited from the scam
She noted, among others, the inquiry report of the Anti-Money Laundering Council which made a financial analysis on the “irrefutable burgeoning wealth” of Revilla
“But taken together with the amalgamation of forces that brought about the conspiracy in the PDAF scam, these facts positively establish that the end-all of the conspiracy is for Revilla to have 50% of the PDAF allocation that only passed his conspirator, Cambe, to eventually end-up in his bank accounts,” Gomez-Estoesta said
Gomez-Estoesta also pointed out that all the accused, including Revilla, were ordered to return P124 million to the national government in the majority decision
“It only goes to say, therefore, that since all three accused were made to answer for the same liability, the source of the accumulation of wealth as found in the criminal liability should only be the same,” Gomez-Estoesta said.
Sandiganbayan decisions usually categorically say if an accused is guilty or not guilty in the dispositive portions of their decisions but in Revilla’s case, it was not mentioned (more)

In her dissenting opinion, Estoesta highlighted the unexplained deposits to Revilla’s bank accounts from 2004 to 2010, cash assets not declared in his Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN).
Citing a report from the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC), Estoesta noted that by 2010, the Revilla bank accounts accumulated a total of P170.9 million when he only declared P81.16 million in cash and investments in his SALN for that year.
Accused Revilla did not answer this specific accusation except a general denial. A strong evidence by the prosecution, call it direct or even circumstantial.
Majority banked so excessively on the ‘signatures’ of this accused as forged which is not as overwhelming as the more circumstantial evidence.

REVILLA ACQUITTED; NAPOLES, CAMBE CONVICTED OF PLUNDER CHARGES – SANDIGANBAYAN
Pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Lim-Napoles and lawyer Richard Cambe were found guilty of plunder by the Sandiganbayan on Friday as the anti-graft court’s Special First Division acquitted former Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla
According to the Sandiganbayan Special First Division, both will serve a sentence of up to 40 years imprisonment and are perpetually disqualified from holding public office. Cambe served as aide to Revilla
The anti-graft court said the prosecution was not able to prove the guilt of Revilla, who was accused of allocating P224 million from his ‘pork barrel’, or the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) to bogus non-government organizations owned by Napoles
This is first pork barrel scam case decided by the Sandiganbayan
During the promulgation this morning, the Sandiganbayan Special First Division said that it is Cambe, and not Revilla, who is guilty of misusing public funds (more)

What surely will happen when the 2nd Round of TRAIN TAX is imposed as recom by the eco managers of this Adm?
What surely will happen when ATENEO EAGLES tomorrow has that confidence into over-confidence to win GAME 2 in UAAP?
To both questions the answer or answers will be: 1.) Adm candidates risks losing to opposing candidates due to TAX train increase. Eco managers’ reason to go on with the TAX is a volatile reason now and for Year 2019 to beyond on lower prices of CRUDE OIL. Maintaining the suspension of increasing the TAX is better than not. Taxes are bitter to the people specially the POOR voting CLASS. Hugpong PagSira ni Sarah will be probably be unsuccessful due to voting by voters heaving under increasing TAXES for now and Year 2019 beyond.
2.) ATENEO EAGLES if or when over-confident risks to UP Maroons winning GAME 2.
When not sure, means In Case Of Doubt = play BOTH situations to WIN. Win the Game & Win the Voting. Summa total: No increase of TAXES. Maintaining the winning streak. Everybody happy.
Train Taxes & UAAP Games helps for hunger. The opposite is ANGER and LOSER, respectively.

Who invented Basketball? James Naismith, a Chemist. How was it originally played?
– Naismith gave more details of the first game and the initial rules that were used:
I showed them two peach baskets I’d nailed up at each end of the gym, and I told them the idea was to throw the ball into the opposing team’s peach basket. I blew a whistle, and the first game of basketball began. … The boys began tackling, kicking and punching in the clinches. They ended up in a free-for-all in the middle of the gym floor. [The injury toll: several black eyes, one separated shoulder and one player knocked unconscious.] “It certainly was murder.” [Naismith changed some of the rules as part of his quest to develop a clean sport.] The most important one was that there should be no running with the ball. That stopped tackling and slugging. We tried out the game with those [new] rules (fouls), and we didn’t have one casualty. –
’twas a try-MURDER game at first.
Mr. Farolan seems right to suggest to murder the Ateneo players today’s 2nd Game. Pray today there will be no physical casualties.

1. Pope says governments have duty to fight drug traffickers
Vatican City — Pope Francis says it is the duty of governments to fight drug traffickers, who peddle “death.”
Francis, addressing participants at a Vatican conference on drug addiction on Saturday, decried “pathological forms derived from a secularized cultural climate, marked by the capitalism of consumption.” He also noted “existential emptiness” and the “precariousness” of human ties.
Conference participants had grappled with issues of “old and new addictions that block integral human development.” he said.
Francis called on everyone to combat the production and distribution of such drugs and said it is the task of governments “to face with courage this fight against the traffickers of death.”

2. China to label fentanyl as controlled substance
Buenas Aires — China has agreed to label fentanyl a controlled substance after a meeting between President Donald Trump and chinese president Xi Jinping. The deadly synthetic opiod is responsible for tens of thousands of U.S. drug deaths annually
U.S. officials for years have been pressing the chinese government to take a tougher stance against fentanyl, which is 50 times more powerful than heroin. Most U.S. supply of the drug is manufactured in china
White House press secretary Sarah Sanders says the decision means that “people selling fentanyl to the United States will be subject to china’s maximum penalty under the law.”

for chinese fentanyl to become controlled substance, it would have to meet the prescribed international drug standard and need to pass stringent pagsusuri ng food and drug admin.
I say, trump has just made china honest for once! it’s fentanyl trade regulated.

pls lang po, yong fentanyl sa hospital administered to acute and post operative patients to kill pain are quite safe. hospital based fentanyl are already controlled substance and can only be given to patients on doctor’s order.
in post operative patients and after about 2 days of fentanyl medication, patients are weaned off fentanyl and moved on to other pain killing drugs. fentanyl is highly addictive and its long term use is not encouraged.
usually, patients 1st time put on fentanyl are observe and monitored for about few minutes for any allergic reaction. if patients were to die because of allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), death will come in the next 30 minutes or so. but because the patient is under close observation, any adverse reaction are repulsed, the patient saved from harm.
hospital fentanyl is safe for hospital use. the fentanyl bought and sold in the black market are dubious and could well be harmful.

Game 1, although close in the 3rd and some part of the 4th qrtrs, was comparable to the Golden States warriors vs the New York Knicks – too much firepower from the splash brothers and the time-tested set-plays they’ve mastered through the years of playing together.
But the ball is round and who knows – game 2 may go the UP Maroons’ way even if the momentum is on the Blue Eagles right now.
